Building a Scene: It’s over isn’t it?
For Pearl’s song “It’s Over isn’t it?” the scene is about Pearl accepting a loss. As the series has progressed, she’s learned that she isn’t always right, and that there are things about herself that she’s has to reevaluate. This all comes to a sort of climax in this scene where she accepts and admits out loud that her relationship with Rose was never as deep and complete as she wanted it to be or told herself it was. This is where she’s left at the end of the scene, feeling lost and out of place.
In the outline written by Ben Levine and Matt Burnett, this is how the scene looked:
You’ll notice a lot of things ended up changing compared to the final version. Most of that was due to time constraints. When we started storyboarding the episode, all of the rough demos of the songs were recorded so that we had an idea of the amount of time we had between each song (which ended up not being very much). The result was that we had to basically be transitioning constantly between songs, but doing it in a way that felt natural and as gentle as possible.
In addition, Rebecca remembered a part from the 1982 movie “Victor Victoria” starring Julie Andrews that she wanted to use as reference for the feeling of the scene:
Right away we latched onto this spinning 360 degree camera move. I loved the energy and focus it gave to the character and I immediately roughed out a version with Pearl.
If you’re ever stuck during a scene this is what you do: Don’t start from the beginning, find the moment you see clearest in your mind and build out from there. From these rough thumbnails I built the rest of the scene outward. I brought back motifs like her sword skills and her dance style to help evoke the past events of the series, and I tried to give as much time as I could to each shot and make her acting as expressive a possible.
Below are my rough boards set to Rebecca’s demo. At the end, i added a pause for when she throws the Rose into the air. It felt like a good spot for things to crescendo ring out. Deedee Magno Hall’s rendering of this blew us all away when we heard it.
From there clean up was pretty much straight forward. The scene didn’t change much except for tweaking her acting here and there. I’m super proud of how this scene turned out, hats off to Nick DeMayo our animation director and to the team at Sunimin in Korea where they draw the entire episode on paper:

He is wearing late 1700s period costume: a plum velvet jacket and matching silk waistcoat with a ruffled white cravat. His dark hair is shoulder length and partly pinned back, and he has a goatee. His hand rests over his heart, and he’s gazing straight ahead with a serene expression. The background is deep mauve with an orange glow.]
Smoky is such a good medium between Steven and Amethyst
Like I think it was a very specific choice to have Smoky enter Lotus position while flying through the air to rescue Pearl and Garnet.
Yoga, specifically lotus position, is a visual indicator of balance and harmony and all that good stuff to a viewer, so to see this literal representation of a calm inner state is a strong indicator of what Smoky’s strength is: their innate sense of inner balance.Â
Obviously we’re not talking perfect balance, here. There is still some hints of self doubt and self ciritcism.
“We’re still waiting for the main event!”
However, this moment aside, Smoky has been upbeat, quick to respond, and most importantly, level headed. This is a great halfway point between Steven’s idealistic optimism and Amethyst’s nonchalant apathy. When you match a positive outlook with a carefree and relaxed disposition, you get a being who is ready to deal with any situation, and meet it with a happy, determined face.
tldr; Smokyquartz doesn’t panic in the face of danger because they represent the balanced combination of positive, good thinking (Steven) and the relief of worry from not caring more than necessary (Amethyst)
you should always carry around very small clothes that can fit a frog. listen to me. listen. what if you meet a frog one day and you instantly have clothes for him. youll be that frog’s bro
the frog, will he guide me or betray me?
the frog’s intentions are pure. your ignorance is not your fault, but do not presume such again.

tbh people mock harry for going back to rescue fleurs sister in the second triwizard task but harry knows dumbledore better than anyone else. he probably looked at the situation and thought “would dumbledore let an eight year old drown just because fleur couldnt do this bit? yes. yes he would.”
it’s also possible he was acting off of the lessons he learned in the abusive dursley household. that’s why he does a lot of his so-called “hero complex” shit. he takes a lot of personal responsibility for other people bc he learned growing up that “no one’s here for you, no one will help you, you will not catch any breaks”. he helps bc if he didn’t, who would? certainly not the dursleys, and that’s what he grew up with.
he does things by himself and the two people he actually trusts, bc he’s learned that authority figures are no help and will only make things worse. he takes situations at face value bc he’s never seen other options in his life, he’s never HAD other options in his life. speaking very personally, that was a serious marker of abuse that i saw in myself - i never thought abt escape, or what i could do to improve my situation, bc i didn’t even see that as an option. the options were survive or don’t, deal w it or don’t, acclimate or implode.
maybe he wasn’t thinking abt what DUMBLEDORE would do, what anyone at hogwarts would do. maybe he was acting off what he knew the dursleys (his main authority figures) would do. the dursleys would let the girl drown. and harry was there, and harry could do something, and so harry did. he took personal responsibility for fleur’s sister’s safety bc all his life he’s learned that authority figures cannot be trusted to do so.
people characterize these aspects of harry as a “hero complex” or a “stupid nobility” or a “lack of common sense”, but i don’t agree with that. i can’t put my finger on exactly what it is. it’s not completely unhealthy; it’s even very useful and responsible on occasion.
it’s called “complex ptsd” and if you get out of the abusive situation before you’re old enough to understand how fucked up it was, like Harry did, you don’t end up with the classic flashbacks so much, just atypical behavior patterns and a high risk of other shit. That’s why Harry is so fucked up by everything that Umbridge does, it’s because he’s being retraumatized in his safe space.

We know why.
It doesn’t fit the narrative..
Can we get this dude a kickstarter to raise enough for a high-end meal and cab fare for him and his family? He clearly deserves it.

“By creating the exit, Yousuf estimated that about 70 people were able to get out of the nightclub safely.” He saved 70 people. That’s 70 more people that could have died that night. This is so important.
