Sorry if I seem too obsessed with robin's dick joke, but that's been the most in character thing I've witnessed her do towards Steve this whole season. She WOULD say "That's what she said." whenever she could, and you can't convince me otherwise. And I do think Steve would usually find the joke hilarious. Unfortunately, the timing was a little off this time.

God this just reminded me how much I hate when people talk about this scene they only focus on how great of a friend Steve was for being so accepting and shit but ignoring how brave Robin was to not only politely reject Steve’s interest in her but also come out as a lesbian since she live in a small town in the 80s. This scene is about Robin but nah, let’s ignore that and praise the man instead.
Actually, I’ll never get over the Absentee Father parallel between Cas and Dean. Because, at the end of the day, God is John and John is God. Season one is quite literally the search of the Father Figure that will make sense of the horror: they follow his guidance through a book (the Journal, or the Hunter Bible in a way), he is the voice on the phone that answers once every five months. An unreliable saviour that puts you in the first line of danger but that you are expected to follow faithfully, blindly. Dean, who never truly questions, is the Holy Son, the Righteous Man, the Micheal Sword, while Sam, who ran away, who disobeyed, is Lucifer’s Vessel, the Cursed One, the Boy with the Demon Blood. It makes it even more ironic that, between the two of them, Dean is the one that doesn’t think God is real, when Sam is the one that prays and believes in angels. Dean doesn’t need God, he already has his Dad. Dean, through his relationship with his Dad has become Jesus on the Cross that asks “Why hast thou forsaken me?” without any answers.
Castiel is exactly the same. Hunter or soldier, the difference is minimal, he is the Dean to God’s John. When we meet him he follows blindly the orders of a Father that has left the building a long time ago. God is also on a hunting trip, God also hasn’t been home in a few weeks. When Dean is left hanging on the phone, Cas prays into the void. While Dean searches for his Father all through season one, Cas goes on the same goosechase in season five, following useless clues, distressed and alone. And both times those father figures aren’t even gone. John is at a bar or in a shady motel filtering Dean’s calls and sending him and Sam on random hunts when he feels like it. God is a shitty writer with a laptop and a glass of whiskey, doing conventions and watching the world crumble in front of him. They’re both shit fathers who leave their sons break themselves on the wall they made up. And even when those fathers appear it’s to make them suffer a bit more: another hunt for Dean who spent his life saying he wants to stop, a new resurrection for Castiel who says himself “I see now it's a punishment resurrection, it gets worse every time”. Jesus on the Cross. “Why hast thou forsaken me”. Being brought back to life just to die all over again.
And what makes me even more crazy is how this parallel participates in the mundane/holy aesthetic and ideology of the show and connects Cas and Dean so deeply. Cas just wants his Dad, Dean just wants his God. It emphasizes the mundanity of Cas’ relationship to God, and the holiness of Dean's relationship to John. So when at the end of day you get this all-powerful Angel, soldier of Heaven, and this Hunter who drinks too much and smiles at pretty waitresses, of course, of course, they are the same, of course they’re just two sons with a father that doesn’t respond to their calls. So when Castiel is devastated by the absence of God in the neon lights of a motel, what can Dean say except “I’ve been there. I’m a big expert on dead-beat dads”. And so Castiel, the angel, the all-knowing creature from Heaven asks the man “How do you manage it?”, Dean can only leave a silence because you don’t, you don’t manage it, you just do what you can, but you’re still the son that was left behind. And for one of the first times in the show you see how alike they truly are.
