I wrote a new song called "Stasis." It's about being stuck, or feeling stuck and confused. Where did it come from? Well, I saw a man who just got out of jail, and he mentioned being "incapable of life." It stuck with me, so I spent some time writing this song. If you want to know more about this process, you can find it on Substack:
Hollow Dream
Discipline is a luxury I didn’t feel like spending today. I’d rather be feeding crows in the sun, but instead, I’m opening a document to turn black into white.
"ALIVE" isn't about the usual gratitude—health, family, etc. It’s a gothic dive into the "sea of the dead," inspired by tired faces, morning debt, and Nietzschean echoes.
"Some are dying to live, While others are living to die."
It's been a struggle to drag these lyrics out of the void, but the first draft is down. Borrowing a bit of soul from Edgar Winter to find the exit.
Writing a song is one thing; prompting for it is completely different. Your song will likely change according to the prompts. Some words need to go, and some need to stay. If you want a song to sound good, fewer words are better. But sadness can sound beautiful if sung nicely; that is the feeling I am trying to capture.
"Filled with darkness, waiting to be found. To find things between wrong and right."
It has some depth, no? But again, where do you want to go with these? What instruments would you prefer? What tone? What kind of vocals? You can change all of these with AI pretty quickly. The issue remains: what kind of pictures and scenes are going through your head while you are listening? Think of it as prompting for a video; you are trying to pull a scene out.
"Not to surrender, but to fight."
That is a powerful line that can mean a lot of things. The perspective you want to show through a video would be a specific scene, and then you just think about the music that would fill it.
"I'm bleeding through my wounds this night; don’t be afraid, you are all that I’ve got."
The second part brings more energy and more fight. It probably needs more kicks and a more aggressive vocal toward the end of the song. You want to unleash the vocals but still be very careful not to cause tearing or distortion.
And that’s pretty much it. Prompting took more time than writing. "Forgotten" has been written and it has its sound—a disturbing one, which is what I aimed for.
For this song, I had no idea where to go with it or where to start. After writing some dance track and metal track, all I knew was that this one has to lean towards dark pop. But WTF is dark pop anyway? Depressive or what? So one has to embrace the darkness and bring some poetry to life. But AI allows you some weird things when it comes to writing songs. You can open with dialogue or monologue.
"Is there anybody, even if it is, who cares?"
Like a whisper, maybe, then roll into Verse 1. Try something mysterious? Walk those notes between too brutal and suicidal to something that would be more acceptable to the listener. They don't want Poe and "nevermore," I guess.
"To show me the light, find things between wrong and right."
But my AI is the king of gothic and leans towards darkness. Now that I think about it, every single one is. Learning more about myself as I go through. Need some happy motherfucker that will make me smile. K-pop shit or something. But I'm afraid that might push me over.
"To start again deep into the night? Not to surrender, but to fight."
Well, that was the chorus part. Still a mystery where this goes. I need to take the wheel and direct it now toward some feeling. Maybe you can use some person that awoke some feeling in you if you get stuck between the lines.
"I'm bleeding through my wounds this night, don't be afraid, you are all that I got, because where there is darkness, there's no light."
Second verse — almost nothing. I like this part, but it's hard to chain something with this. Feels like a suicide note, but I know that AI will make something out of it and make a good song. It's just that it feels off for now.
"Lost and found, but nobody cared."
For the outro or something. I know that AI will warn me about mental health when I send him to check grammar. More reasons to get worried. But I feel fine. It's hard to explain to people that I found pleasure in writing like this. I think I will name the song "Forgotten."
