Was at Bangkok's Sea Life Aquarium yesterday. *** Someone asked me for directions to the exit, somehow assuming that I was a local staff. He seemed offended when I said that I have no idea. *** A family exclaimed over a tank with crickets. They were jabbing fingers at the glass, gesturing to fidgety insects. I pointed out the pacman frog to a little boy. He took a photo with his iPad and quickly turned away. *** A reef shark, much longer than the average Singaporean adult, was nibbling at another's tail fin. I could see the white of cartilage. It turned out to be part of a mating ritual. *** Certain animals die more quickly in captivity. Whale sharks, great white sharks. Others have their lifespans tripled. The sheltered life favours some.
Just watched 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' and thoroughly enjoyed the movie. When I was young(er), I used to compete with two friends on who could recite the most number of Harry Potter spells from memory. It had felt like a betrayal, this new series of movies. As in, let the Harry Potter series remain in the pleasant mist of the past. But Fantastic Beasts is a terrific movie - with a subtle critique on manmade destruction of ecosystems - and now I feel the need to re-read all the Harry Potter books. #thunderbird #fantasticbeasts #harrypotter #ink #marker #art #colour

Say ‘canal’ and there’s that final vowel
Towing silence with it, slowing time
To a walking pace, a path, a whitewashed gleam
Of dwellings at the skyline. World stands still.
The stunted concrete mocks the classical.
Water says, ‘My place here is in dream,
In quiet good standing. Like a sleeping stream,
Come rain or sullen shine I’m peaceable.’
Stretched to the horizon, placid ploughland,
The sky not truly bright or overcast:
I know that clay, the damp and dirt of it,
The coolth along the bank, the grassy zest
Of verges, the path not narrow but still straight
Where soul could mind itself or stray beyond.
