If Magnus hurries with the compliment and moving to the restaurant, it’s because walking side by side doesn’t allow for much eye contact. All conversations like that are shallow, he wants to be settled in a chair as fast as possible.
Not five minutes later they’re at a table with a view, just a few feet away from the sea. Wicker chairs, cushioned, wide and comfortable, wooden floors and flyaway curtains that shield them from the evening’s breeze. The server comes and goes, having brought the wine list and menu, and Magnus takes a moment before flipping his own open. “It’s not why I asked,” he says. “I just like to know.” Where he can see the appeal of ordering for somebody, he’d not have done so with a person he’s just met.
“I’ve actually never been here before so if you order something that will look good, I’m just gonna steal from your plate.” He chuckles, then decides on octopus salad as starter. “Think I want fish. If you decide on that, too, we can get one of these,” he turns the menu Aaron’s way so the man can read what Magnus is pointing at. A plate of various fish for two.
The server returns, asking if they’ve chosen their drinks. “Beer,” Magnus says. Then, at his companion: “Not a wine person. You?”
The walk to the restaurant was quick and quiet but Aaron didn't mind. The silence wasn't awkward, and he hoped Magnus felt the same way. Luckily the restaurant was nearby, while he didn't mind walking he already walked quite a bit from his apartment to the welcome center so he wanted to keep the walking to a minimum for now.
When they arrived at the restaurant he glanced down at his clothes. Hoping that he wasn't underdressed for the occasion. Since it looked pretty high class. But seeing people around in sundresses eased his mind. Despite the high class setting the restaurant was still near the beach on a tropical island. If it was somewhere else he would've been underdressed but with this warm climate suits and ties weren't necessary unless it was a very high-class event.
"Ah, okay," Aaron replied as he flipped through his own menu. "Feel free to do so if whatever's on my plate looks good enough," he smiled. Looking up when he saw Magnus point his menu at him. He always had trouble picking something at a restaurant he's never been to. While he wanted to try new things he also didn't want to risk not liking whatever it was that he ordered. "Yeah, sure sounds good," Aaron said, trying to hide his relief at the thought of not having to pick a main dish course anymore.
When the server returned to ask for their chosen drink Aaron looked up at the waiter. "Hard cider, please," he requested before looking back at Magnus. His friends back home used to tease him about drinking hard cider, saying that it was just alcoholic apple juice. Which wasn't completely wrong and he wasn't afraid to admit that was partly why he liked it so much that it was just apple juice with a bite. Me neither," he confessed. "White wine was the first alcoholic drink I had but the way it felt in my mouth was offputting enough that I haven't tried any wine since," he confessed. Some hard ciders tasted like apple juice mixed with white wine but he avoided those. Unfortunately, not all restaurants had the brand of hard cider on the menu so whenever he ordered it at a restaurant he has never been to it was always a gamble if he would end up liking it or not.
When he finished his confession he noticed that the server was still at their table. For a moment he thought the man was going to say that they were out of hard cider tonight but the look of thought on his face made him think otherwise.
"I'm sorry but you wouldn't be Aaron Breach, sir?" the server asked politely. Making Aaron go slightly pale, getting nervous on how he got recognized and why.
"Yeah, yeah that's me," he replied after trying to find his words. Getting more nervous with every second that passed.
"I knew I recognized that voice from somewhere," the sever said excitedly. "I just wanted to let you know that I'm a huge fan of your podcast. Your history lectures were more useful than my professors ever been," he smiled.
For a second Aaron wasn't sure what was going on but when all this information sunk in a bashful but excited smile made his way on his face as he let out a relieved chuckle. "Ah, I'm glad they were useful to you," Aaron said feeling himself getting flustered at how excited the other was to meet him.
"Don't worry, I won't ask for an autograph. I remember you saying that you're not a fan of how you're never able to get it to look the same way," the server chuckled. Making Aaron chuckle as well, surprised that the other could remember he said that.
"Well, it was a pleasure to meet you so first drinks will be on me." Before Aaron could decline the server shook his head saying he insisted before he left to actually get them their drinks.
For a moment he just watched the sever walk away. Still smiling, while this wasn't the first time he got recognized in public it was the first time since he got on the island. Making it feel special in a way. After the excitement settled he looked up to see Magnus. Face flushed once again at the thought of having to explain whatever just happened. A sheepish smile on his face as he waited for the other to start asking questions.
