I still say America needs five wizarding schools:
A northern school, a southern school, a historically Black school, a Native school, and a Spanish missionary school on the west coast.
Or just something that fits in with American history.
as a side, I also think Canada would have at least four: one in Québec where everything is taught primarily in French (it serves the Acadian population in the Maritimes too, but anyone can attend the school so long as they’re fluent); one in Ontario (serves everything east of Manitoba); one on the west coast (either in the forests in BC or in the Rockies); and one in the northern territories, on one of the shitload of islands. All the schools would look like the railroad hotels, bc those are the closest things we have to castles here. The one in the territories looks like Château Montebello though. (Saskatchewan gets nothing bc it’s flat where are you supposed to hide a school behind corn?!?!)
yeeeeeeees
Yes. You could definitely hide a wizard school in the rockies.
Okay, but I have a folder of stuff for the canadian school(s) of magic;
The school in Quebec is L’école de magie Forbien Narré (The Forbien Narre School of Magic) was started in 1615
The school is on Ile de Rene Levasseur is in lake Manicouagan, or Crater Lake, and is the result of the 4th largest meteor strike to hit the earth, 214 million years ago. The island is 100km (62 miles) across, and the school takes up the majority of the Louis Babel National Park (réserve écologique), although the muggles don’t realize that.
The school is there with the permission of the Innu tribe, the Betsiamites, with the obligation to preserve the ancient boreal trees as well as the other native species from loggers
Forbien Narré is known for its excellent alchemical teachings, as well as its relatively traditional outlook, as it has stayed close to its french roots, especially after the english kicked the muggle french out.
as such, there is a rather larger french population than one would expect based on the muggle numbers, as many of the french wizardry did not leave but created similarly hidden towns to Hogsmead, although the magical quebecoise community can be reached in through an inn in Old Quebec in Quebec city.
The school is named after the preeminent french scholar and playwrit from the 15th century
The primary language of instruction is quebecoise french (and if you go trying to speak parisian french, you will be laughed at ceaselessly) although as above, acadian french is also accepted.
Forbien has a really shitty quod pot team, a shitter quidditch team, and a winged horse riding team (aviequestrianism) that ranks in the top 3 globally
Forbien starts in grade 6 and runs through until grade 13, there called année 1-8,
After Année 3, students are expected to pick a subject speciality that will help them towards their chosen careers, and are expected to focus their classes on those subjects
There is no house system, students are arranged into dormitories by age and gender, and roomed randomly until année 4 whereupon they are roomed wth people not in their specialty so as to encourage discussionand thought
Nicolas Flamel taught alchemy to students in année 7 and 8, for a decade in the 19th century, partially to spite the then headmaster of Beaubatons, with whom he disagreed fervently on several topics
The Ontario is the Queen Elizabeth Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry was founded in 1605
QEAWW is northeast of Thunder Bay, built into and from the Canadian Shield, a mantle of rock dating back to the protozoic era.
British wizards there settled without the permission of the local Chippewa tribes, which caused a lot of bad blood between the invading settlers and the local tribes. Only after The Canadian Indigenous Magical Truth and Reconciliation Committee (CIMTAR) was formed in 1950 did the relations settle down
QEAWW is a very traditional school that was modeled after Hogwarts, and is very elitist. It is very much the “private school” of the canadian schools, and is the only one to charge tuition instead of being funded by the Canadian Magical Government (CanMaG, pronounced can-mag)
Students are admitted at age 11 and go through 7 years of schooling
because there is one less year at QEAWW as opposed to Forbien or Wenlock, their years are more intense and focused.
QEAWWis known for the traditional 3, potions, transfiguration, and charms, and while it is the best in North America ant Quidditch, it never manages to place internationally
QEAWW produces many of the politicians and business leaders of the CanMaG
The British Colombian school is Bridget Wenlock School of Magic was started in 1873
Wenlock was built in British Colombia in the Rockies 320km (200 miles) northwest of Vancouver. The school is in the Silverthrone Caldera, the caldera of a dormant volcano
Wenlock is on Kwakwaka’wakw land, the land deal negotiated by Nathan Dyck, who later helped foud CIMTAR
Bridget Wenlock was a 12th century English arithmantist who discovered the magical significance of the number 7, and worked with her partner Ysota de Lacy on the resulting arithmancy equations.
Ysota de Lacy (Ravenclaw), pureblood daughter of Rose Ni Conchobair was the grand daughter of Irish king Ruaidri Ua Conchobair who when to Hogwarts at the same time as Bridget (Hufflepuff), a muggleborn english commoner, daughter of two tailors. Their mutual love of mathematics and arithmancy led to a long lasting romantic and professional relationship
Wenlock is especially known for its excellent arithmancy programs, as well as its healing program
Wenlock is also known for its relative modernity. Founded by muggleborn wizard Richard Strausser, he wanted to make a school that would also keep up one’s muggle education after he found himself unable to properly aid in the family business, eventually leaving it to his more savy sister.
As such, Wenlock is much more modern than its sister schools, and has incorporated muggle to a great extent
Wenlock is the only school to offer muggle schooling alongside magical
Wenlock is not a boarding school, and students arrive by several school buses that function similarly to the Knight Bus
Because Wenlock also teaches muggle education, one can join it at any point in their schooling, kindergarten to graduation, and be assured that they will take all necessary tests to graduatie wit both a BC high school diploma as well as the Canadian Magical Competency Certificate
The First Nations School of Magic is completely unknown to non-indigenous people.
Settled people do not know the name, location, system or population of the school, as it has been kept as a tribal secretsince the first white person settled
There is however, an office on Baffin Island (Qikiqtaaluk Island) should the school need to contact the CanMaG or vice versa
It is known that aboriginal magical children vanished from their resedential schools, and were never seen or heard from again. It is presumed that they were taken to the fist nations school
holy shit, Canada
yes please
– Isn’t this story very much like the other story you just told me? And the one before it, and the one before that…
– All stories are the same. I want you to realize this. To get bored of listening to my stories, and leave me, and go off in search of your own.
– You don’t really want me to leave you, do you?
– If you don’t, then I will leave you, one day. It’s terrible, but that’s the secret true ending of every story.

When I wrote Love in the Time of Global Warming I wasn’t planning to make all four main characters LGBTQ but they just came out that way (no pun intended). One young reader said it bothered her that all four characters were LGBTQ. She said she thought at least one or two could have been straight. I’d imagine this is how LGBTQ kids feel like when they read books with all straight characters, over and over again.

I’ve finished the first playable build of my terrarium builder! It’s in a pretty early stage right now but the basic features are all in there. Some jars don’t display correctly and I’ve only got a few plants made but you should be able to make a simple terrarium! Try it here! You’ll need the unity webplayer plugin installed. Controls and more info are found in game! Click the bar at the top to get started - lemme know what you think! :O EDIT - First p big bug spotted! Clicking a button that displays “Plant not yet added!” can mess up the plant submenu, it gets confused when it can’t add anything. Refresh the page and try not to click those buttons!

Introducing open revenue sharing
AKA: You can soon help itch.io pay its bills
Since October 2013, itch.io has let developers sell their content without taking any of the money. It was originally disabled for the Ludum Dare October Challenge, which challenges people to build a game, take it to market, and sell it.
At the time I decided to keep itch.io’s fee off indefinitely since the cost of hosting the site was manageable, and it was really encouraging to sellers. Fast forward to today and things have grown quite a bit. Recently many have been asking about when itch.io will start making money. They want to see the marketplace they enjoy have a sustainable business model so they can continue to use it for the foreseeable future.
I’m really inspired by the community that has formed around itch.io. It’s a generous group giving money to creators to support their work. I want to encourage this kind of community from every angle, and I decided that how I handle the fee would be the perfect opportunity to do that.
itch.io has always been pay-what-you-want for buyers, it will soon be pay-what-you-want for sellers. I’m calling it open revenue sharing.
I’ve written a separate post on the itch.io site, What is itch.io, talking about what itch.io’s goals are along with introducing the idea. If you also believe that itch.io is doing something good here then I highly encourage you to share and spread the post.
So what is open revenue sharing?
As the seller you decide what percentage itch.io gets from each transaction. From 0 to 100%, set the slider to what you think is fair. A quote from the post I linked above:
You might be saying “well that sounds pretty risky, what if everyone sets it to 0?” We think that’s a risk we’re willing to take in the spirit of encouraging the generous and supportive community that’s already developed around itch.io.
You’ll find these new revenue share options on the seller settings tab in your account settings page. Because I don’t want to just start collecting money with no notice, the revenue sharing will not be active until March 23rd, 2015 but you can configure the percentage that will be applied to your account now.
itch.io’s default rate will be 10%. If you don’t make any changes to your account then it will automatically be set to 10%. 10% is far below the industry standard, 30%, which you’ll see on places like Apple App Store, Google Play or Steam. If you don’t think the default is fair, either too low or too high, I encourage you to change it!
I hope you consider everything itch.io has been doing over the past two years when choosing the revenue split. itch.io is an evolving project that has taken thousands of hours to develop. If you believe this is a project that should succeed then reflect that in the amount you choose. The money earned will be put directly back into the site to continue providing the tools you need to sell and market your content.
Don’t forget to check out the What is itch.io post I mentioned above.
Thanks! - Leaf
Alternate Archers
We’ve already revealed the new Red Archer who was added for the Dark World Expansion, but she’s not the only new playable character. In fact, there’s 10 new archers total! We’re filling out the cast by adding an alternate for every single fighter. Some are different versions of the same archers from the past or future, or even an alternate timeline, and a few are entirely new characters.
Our first addition is the alternate Green Archer: Vigilante Mask, the original green archer’s fearless protégé. Even as a master archer, it can be difficult for a child to be taken seriously in battle. She created her masked alter ego to inspire fear in the hearts of her adversaries. Plus she thinks it looks super badass.
Next up is the alternate blue archer. If you keep up on gaming news she may seem familiar - her appearance is loosely based on feminist games critic Anita Sarkeesian. Anita’s work has been an inspiration to the TowerFall team. Her “Tropes vs Women in Games” video series gave us a valuable new lens through which to assess our character designs. TowerFall is about bringing people together, so it’s vitally important that the cast of playable characters makes everyone feel invited to join in. Simply put, this wouldn’t have occurred to me if not for Anita, and feedback from players has reinforced how important it really is. We’re very excited to immortalize Anita in a small way, as the alternate Last of the Order.
Fate has not been kind to our Assassin Prince. Much of his desert kingdom was obliterated by the plummeting Moonstone, and his royal father was soon overthrown in the ensuing uprising. The prince returned home to win back the throne, but suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the usurper. He was robbed of his eyesight and left to crawl away, humiliated. Alternate Pink is the Blind Prince.
When the portals linking TowerFall to its Dark World began appearing, the first thing to emerge was alternate orange, the Loyal Kingsguard. The original Orange Archer became a wanted man after his infamous betrayal of TowerFall’s king, but this shadow doppelgänger reflects the soldier’s darker side, that aspect of him that would remain loyal to the corrupted monarch. His design is inspired by Alucard from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
We still have five alternate archers left to reveal. We’ll post them as they’re ready in the coming weeks :)
