Tagalog ancient writing called Baybayin. The written word is read as BATAHALA (BATHALA) Meaning GOD.
This is what happens when fellow Filipino martial art practitioners meet.
I really admire the talent and skill of fellow FMA'ers and how different systems and styles could just do an impromptu free flow demo in a bazaar at Megamall in front of many people.
Sa sobrang impromptu ay hindi ko na nagawang ibaba ang bag ko. ๐
Drilling with me here, is Guro Adrien Quidlat from RRK system. We were testing out Maestro Allan Fami's (owner of Kalahi) training swords.

The beautiful art of Espada y Daga is part of the Filipino Martial Arts training. It helps a practitioner to develop good hand and eye coordination while handling uneven weapons, develops good sense of timing, proper footwork and applications of correct distance.

The stick, knife, staff and the bolo are mere tools in Eskrima. They are what we often refer to as the extension of the hands. The true art of Eskrima is none other than the eskrimador him/herself. For it is the eskrimador who expresses the art through movements, the skills, and the application of knowledge. The eskrimador is also the keeper of its philosophies, principles, cultures, traditions, beliefs and history of its origins.
As we often say: The blade is just a blade . The stick is merely a stick without the eskrimador that wields it.

-Don't waste moves, be flexible. A parry which does not incorporate an attack is wasteful movement.
-The defense is an attack, an attack is a defense
-Hit,hit,hit until the opponent is no longer a threat to your safety.
-Avoid wide movements. Instead, use the centerline in order to deliver your blows without telegraphing your attack as well as your defense.
-Wrist locks and disarming techniques are only incidental. A hit could cause a disarm that only counts as 1 beat which is faster and more practical to use than complicated locks during a heated encounter especially against multiple opponents.
-Hand techniques should correspond with your footwork.
-Hit the nearest and the open targets presented to you.
-Only engage in a fight if no other option or escape in order to avoid it is possible.
-Run if you must, fight if you must, whatever you do, do it decisively and quickly.
-Move with speed and precision using correct distance against the enemy.
-Attack when you see an opening.
-Hand techniques should correspond with footwork.
-The faster you hit the target the better.
-Don't be overconfident; be alert at all times.
- Be strong in your defense, and powerful in your offense.
-Be fiercer in your attack than your enemy.
-Employ your defensive skills when needed.
-A thrust is faster than a slash
-Your fighting position should be designed in such a way to make you a difficult target.
-Striking directly at your enemy's flesh is preferable to blocking the enemyโs weapon.
-Overwhelm your opponent with multiple attacks.
-Avoid edge to edge blocking as much as possible . Use the flat or the spine of the blade instead.
-Get behind your opponent and strike him down from that position.
- Use high, middle and low guard according to the dictates of a fight situatuion.
-Use the stong side of your sword to circumvent or parry the enemy's weapon.
-Footwork, footwork. footwork.
-Use hip movements to add power behind your strikes.
-Look directly beyond the eyes of your enemy while maintaining your peripheral vision.
-Apply the principles of tersya by deflecting with your sword and using your empty hand to powerfully throw the enemy off-balance. In a sword fight, tapik-tapik is not enough.
-Don't let your eyes blink during a blade fight.
-Cut or shorten the distance in order to shorten the travel time of your cuts and thrusts.
-Never point the tip of your blade towards the ground when youโre in front of the enemy.
-If you have to meet the force head on be sure to apply it before your enemy's sword passes half way through his attack.
-If your blade bites and as a result gets locked against the opponent's sword, immediately use your left hand by leaning against the spine of your blade and push it towards cutting your opponent.
-Use leading techniques of tumbada to spill off the opponent's blade and attack immediately.
-When in doubt, apply Recta.
-Don't restrict your attacks only to the upper extremities. Attack the lower extremities as well.
-Use the principles of moving as one with your sword.
-In a blade fight always use grappling, tripping, throwing , punching and kicking when the situation asks for it.
All these are principles I have learned from the masters under their fighting systems. Others are our own. It continues to evolve as we see fit according to the needs of our modern times. Although bladed weapons such as balisongs, long and short knives are still used as a back-up weapon (just in case) we don't really carry around long swords anymore in order to engage in duels. Probably with the exception of our farmers who has to use the bolo as a tool to dig, cut branches, chop fire wood and sometimes use it to defend themselves against wild animals and poisonous snakes in the forest. Some branches of the military also actively trains how to fight using the bolo and machetes which serves as their back up weapon as well if in case they need to do things quietly or in cases where they run out of bullets. It also serves them as a bridge between firearms and emptyhands. Having said that, the most important aspect of training with the Filipino fighting art is that many of its principles can still be adapted not just in fighting but to other aspects of day to day living as well. Discipline, courage, self-confidence, a sound mind, strong body, strong sense of justice, respectful to others, helpful, compassionate, kind and other traits and values are just some of the great benifits from its deep aspects. It's sometimes seen only as a "killing art" But for us it is a "living art" as well.

The circle of combat is where a swordsman's life is. He moves inside the circle which in turn moves along with him as well in any direction. We divide the circle into rings which signifies the ranges of combat. These are the largo (long), medyo (medium) and corto (close). Yet to simplify it we may also refer to it as De Campo (largo to medyo) and De Salon (medyo to corto or labanang dikit) We move along the lines of attack which is divided into 12 referring to our clock footwork. Our body mechanics resemble the shape of the circle which is the reason why we rely on moving our hip as well and sometimes even twisting deeper to avoid thrusts most especially which we call bumibisigra (similar concept to that of a door hinge to facilitate opening and closing the door) The same circle from the ground is also used as the lines of attack represented by lines and angles for cutting and thrusting. And from this circle comes the different shapes of triangles, diamonds, cross, crescent, dots etc. Therefore the circle of combat is applied in footwork, body mechanics and in the movements of the sword.
This is just a one way drill wherein I get to receive an attack without getting a counter defense and attack from my partner. This is just for beginner's introduction to the art of espada y daga .

The only time too much movement becomes a waste of energy is when there is no clear purpose as to why you're moving the way you're moving .
One has to play with different beats, timings and rhythms when working offensively and defensively. Footwork patterns of x, v, triangles, zigzag, T, straight, diagonal, circular and curves are the same with all manners of hand to hand and weapons striking patterns against the opponent. What we do with our hands is what we do with our footwork. Both has to work together in good coordination. It is akin to a deadly dance of death.

Filipino Martial Arts is more than just the acquisition of skills. There are many out there who maybe far more superior with their physical abilities and are lauded as having some form of greatness and are therefore measured by these standards.
Their focus are geared to things such as having the best equipments, all the modern facilities and a fascination for the best scientific approach to learning and practice and totally discarding old methods, practices and beliefs.
Everything about acquiring more strength, speed and power, being the best while proudly beating their chest in arrogance as they tear down the others who are deemed antiquated, old fashion and seemingly weak. That is also the reason why they tend to drop what they think is unimportant to them like giving proper respect to their teachers (many of which they now scoff off as merely old school and superstitious folks) and many more arrogant attitudes towards traditions, beliefs, culture as well as values.
Yes we sometimes envy those who have the best in almost everything as far as modernity is concerned but one thing is for sure. We know very well that the true study of Filipino martial arts goes beyond all these. It goes deeper than what most could understand or grasp within a few years of training. Things that are deeply rooted in our culture, traditions and values which gives it more meaning. It is a living art which affects the wholeness of one's personhood. It is not just about the external trappings that goes along with it such as mere prowess in physical skills, attributes, fame, awards, citations, trophies, a successful business by making a career out of it or more students which equates to having more monetary rewards and others. These things, though sometimes important to us are not considered as the true measurement of greatness which we want to achieve as a true bastonero and kalista. There are far more noble things to aspire for. We also aim to strike a balance in the ability to discipline one's thoughts, emotions, judgements and our religious upbringing which allows us to have more room for kindness, compassion, respect and other desirable traits.
We treat our knowledge as a way to help others and only use the physical aspects in relation to fighting as the very last option when dealing with violence. For us "pakikipag kapwa tao" (the way we relate or treat our fellow men) is far more important. We value the opinion of others and take into considerations most especially our old folks who practise the old traditions of healing and even mysticism without offending and judging them just for the sake of forcing them to believe in our modern way of thinking.
Now we can see that many of what our ancestors were doing are actually even better. We believe in maintaining a good camaraderie among our fellow ekrimadors even though we may be highly opinionated about our own styles and sytems which may be seen as sort of having a dysfunctional relationship. But in truth, we are highly respectful towards one another and is ready to give a helping hand when needed (we still have in us that "๐๐ข๐บ๐ข๐ฏ๐ช๐ฉ๐ข๐ฏ" spirit). We believe in doing good unto others even though the deed is not reciprocated by the other.
These are the deeper things about the Filipino Martial Arts.
