Maybe Shadowheart and I could practice escrima together. And spar a little. And and andâŠ
my Tito demonstrating escrima (arnis)
My Tito back in Cebu explaining the move set for Escrima stick-fighting. He did say hes a bit rusty but was letting me know fundamentals so I have a better idea of how Riz the werehorse fights.
An online friend sent me this video on Nov 10, and I immediately started taking notes on it, lol.
There is nothing better/worse than a white dude learning about arnis and getting So Fascinated by it. Thank the gods that he has a Filipino friend.
The first few minutes are generally a solid if brief history: Eskrima/kalis/arnis started as a commonerâs art with no official âsystem,â aside from being practical, deadly, and using a variety of weapons.
Spain came around and forbid blade usage, hence the transition into the now-famous sticks. Speaking of which, Filipinos killed Magellan using the bladed version of eskrima. Like⊠A LOT of Filipinos. Magellan and 49 Spaniards just rolled up to a full army of 1,500 natives and assumed, âWell, we have guns, so weâll be fiiiiiiiiiiine!â Fuck around and find out, colonizer.
Magellan died because he underestimated the battle-hardened Filipino natives.
The thing that jumped out at me was the comment about eskrima being âhidden in dance and play,â which is likely referring to two things: The maglalatik dance is specifically a war dance. I donât know if thatâs âhidden,â so much as âthis is literally supposed to be practice for young men to learn how to fight, and for seasoned fighters to keep in shape.â
The other might be the common old wivesâ tale saying that kalis fighters practiced to music. This is something that Iâve only seen done 1) for performances/displays where no actual fighting was going on, or 2) to pull foreignersâ legs about secret Pinoy techniques. Some people call it âcheesy,â and I personally think some guys saw Pinoys sparring to their workout playlist (or the historical equivalent), and they thought we did that all the time.
Like, nobody minds if a white guy spars with âEye Of The Tigerâ blasting because maybe he just likes working out to music, but when a Filipino guy/group spars with eskrima to their favorite beats, suddenly itâs a âtime-honored tradition?â I havenât seen any dance-battlers mentioned in the Boxer Codex or other records, so until someone has evidence, I wonât say itâs historical.
Regarding the hands-on stuff: I feel like they intentionally skipped the most boring stuff, either so the video would be more exciting, or to just fuck with poor Martin. Like, they handed this poor man a stick right off the bat and started him out with hitting stuff and sparring? Where is the training montage??? Was all of it cut???
Also, hereâs an intersection with âreal fights arenât nearly as long as the movies pretendâ and âfighters are not necessarily good video-makers:â The spars lasted all of five seconds each, and it was mostly to âthe first one who lands a hit wins.â This is okay when itâs clearly in good fun, but itâs also not very educational and it tips a little bit into âTELLING people how awesome eskrima isâ instead of âSHOWING people how awesome it is.â
Martin does not look like he learned any footwork, either, but he says he knows boxing! The sport that people literally compare eskrimaâs footwork to the most often!
Maybe this is my entertaining/acting side coming out, but if youâre planning a video well in advance, with someone that you know is not trained in this field, and an indirect purpose of this is to spread knowledge of your countryâs national sport/combat-style, I feel like you need to set aside a couple hours for a crash-course of âhereâs how to do X, Y, and Z,â while the actual students and teachers are doing fancy stuff. You can film however much you need, and then CUT however much you need to fit the time-limit.
The video would have greatly been helped if they kept a training montage that lasted twenty or thirty seconds--it would be much more involved than what the video seems to have done, by just tossing a new guy a stick and messing around with him.
General impression: An easy to digest taste of eskrima, like Cup-O-Noodles / instant ramen, or whatever your countryâs version of âcheap and easy foodâ is. Not bad for what it is, but youâll need something meatier after a couple of hours.
Arnis - Hera Models by Federico Ginabreda
Suddenly remembering that time in arnis class and coach asked us what to do when the opponent has a knife, and the first thing that came to my mind was that scene of the old man telling Cheng Xiaoshi to control the opponent's wrist to prevent them from attacking you
But then my coach went and said that holding the wrist is a big mistake, coz in arnis, it's all about diskarte. Hold the enemy at the wrist, and they'll just stab the knife at the nearest skin of yours it can reach
- 23 May 2023: For Yang Rubis -
While Sadie practices her sharpshooting. She couldn't help but notice that peculiar girl on the other end of the court. Whose hair highlighted a spark of maroon against her brown hair.
The girl; Yang Rubis, was training with a pair of thick wooden sticks named; the Arnis beating her opponent with ease like a well-choreographed dance. She was, very majestic~
To the beloved Yang Rubis, Happy belated Birthday~ This gift is taken from Pi's own drawing of [Yang and Her Weapons] with her gym outfit changed and color matched with Sadie's. Added with Yang's signature bright jacket/hoodie.

I was feeling ambitious so, I added this cultural dress that young women wear when they come of age in the Philipines. I tried my damnest to research Quinceanera designs/ cuts but decided to mix it up a little by giving it that cool raised collar with an all-green and gold glitter layer/sleeves. Granted I am a little disappointed with myself knowing that it looked nothing like the actual dresses.
This post was a real challenge because the dress requires a light airbrush of dark tones. At the same time, it needs that dimensional bump while also needing to feel like royalty with gold or silver. Nevertheless, I think of it as an achievement and something I want to improve on in future posts.

With that said, I plan to slow down on the gifts but! I will definitely make time for those who chatted with me for quite some time now. Trying to raise the bar more and more. Once again, happy belated birthday to @piyangg have a great one!
Thanks for readingÂ
