The symbolism for the hanged man is: sacrifice, lack of direction, contemplation, and perspective. Reversed, it means stalling, stagnation, disinterest, and apathy.
What I get from this is that Deryn is stuck in place. He's the leader of Nexus, the wise guiding force of the vigilante group, and he sacrifices everything to be that. But he has also fallen into stagnation. He's constantly waiting for something to happen, for something to change, rather than pushing onward. In some way, he doesn't believe things will change. He is stuck contemplating a better future, watching those around him work for it, but he is stuck in a rut and cannot get out. He hasn't changed in years, he hasn't looked for a new angle.
I definitely think this ties into his relationship with Sparrow, this stagnation, this inability to grow and change, but I need to see more of them to really determine how that plays with their dynamic.
SPARROW: THE LOVERS
This card is all about relationships, unity, love, and balance. Reversed, it means conflict, bad decisions, detachment.
Sparrow defines himself by his relationships with others. He loves so incredibly deeply, and all of his decisions hinge around the people he cares about. It doesn't matter who they are or what they do, he will always love them and be there for them. It's who he is. So when he gets stripped of these relationships, he is left floundering. He doesn't have a defined sense of self because his self revolves around others. He doesn't know who he is, doesn't know how to continue without those relationships, which leads him to cling to them even harder.
There is no Sparrow on his own. He has to be paired with someone. Or at least, that's what he believes.
CANARY: THE TOWER
Oh my gosh. Okay, so the Tower means disaster, upheaval, trauma, destruction, and chaos. Reversed, it means change adverse, delaying the inevitable, damage control that will only make things worse in the long run.
Canary is terrified of losing everything. She's so afraid of it that it's destroying her life. Everything she touches falls apart, and even when she tries to stop it, it only makes things worse. She is falling apart at the seams, destroying herself and driving away those who care about her, and she can't stop doing it. She doesn't know how to fix things. She is stuck and she cannot get out.
I'm so excited to see her in the comic and fully understand her character, because just based off of this card, she is going to be incredibly tragic.
GINNY: THE HIEROPHANT
This card means tradition, conformity, education, belief. Reversed, it means rebellion, unconventionality, ignorance, and new methods
From what I could gather, Ginny is the heart of the original team. She held everyone together, and even now, still tries to maintain connection. She goes against conformity and tradition, has no interest in being what people perceive of her, and is her own independent person
However, in all of her independence and rebellion, she can lose sight of what is most important to her. She focuses too much on standing out and being different that she forgets to still be present in her loved ones lives
I hope we see Ginny in the comic eventually, I think she's very cool from what I've seen and I want to see more of her.
GLORIA: THE EMPEROR
This card is all about authority and control, discipline and focus. Reversed, it means tyrant, stubborn, recklessness.
I don't have a lot to go off of with Gloria, she has less mentions than Ginny, but from what I picked up on, she is a very strong character who is focused intensely on change. She left Nexus because of disagreements on how to operate, believing that they needed to focus on the strong and less on those who couldn't help themselves. She locked in way too hard on the end goal that she forgot about why they were doing things, and she was too stubborn to listen to the others.
I'm like 90% sure that this woman is dead, that her recklessness got her into a situation she couldn't handle, and because she didn't have a team behind her, she lost.
Clara: The World
This one is interesting, it means completion, achievement, belonging, and harmony. Reversed, it means lack of closure, emptiness, lack of achievement.
I think Clara poured herself into vigilante work, throwing caution to the wind. She didn't care whether or not she lived or died, until she met Poli and had the twins. Suddenly, she had fulfillment. Life felt complete. She belonged with someone, she felt like she meant something with her kids.
but I do think, based on the reverse, that she's also gone. Judging by the fact that the twins are now being raised by Deryn and Ginny...it doesn't look great for her. Her story never concluded, there was no closure, no achievement. She died before she saw her work fulfilled. She never gets to raise her kids, she never gets to see a positive change in their city, she never gets the closure she so desperately craved.
POLI: THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE
This one means fate, change, fortune, luck. Reversed is bad luck, lack of control, unwelcome change, and delay.
Poli is very hard for me to research because discord also puts in "poly" for him as well, but: Poli is the wildcard of the group, their shining star. He's soft, down to earth, and he helped remind them what they were fighting for. Based on the card...yeah there's no way he's alive. This card is all about inevitability, fate, running out of luck. He was lucky for so long but you can only have so much luck, and eventually it ran out. I think he might be the reason he and Poli are dead, but I don't have any evidence of that.
FLORENCIA: THE EMPRESS
This card is the "mother" card, for lack of a better word. It's divine feminity, nurturing, beauty. Reversed, it means overbearing, smothering, insecurity, lack of growth and progress
Flo believes what she's doing is good. She's some sort of matron, I think it ties super strongly with Grian's backstory. She's definitely Grian's mother figure, or was at some point, and her actions may be driven by that point. If we lock in on that, then maybe what she's doing with the Waytes (or if she is a part of the Waytes) is driven by this stifling and overbearing part of her that believes what she's doing is supporting Grian or making him stronger
I don't have a super good read on Flo, hers is hard, but I think she fully thinks she's doing the right thing by pushing Grian, and isn't recognizing how overwhelming her actions are.

Hi I’m being so very normal about DDVAU right now so I took like. Two hours to psychoanalyze DH!Scar and the two sides of his life (full essay under the cut!)
DDVAU Scar reads to me as someone who is caught between two worlds, one where he’s virtually invisible and one where he’s far too known. A life with no acknowledgment, power, or consequence but one where he has a say in his morals VS a life where he’s seen and either hated or beloved by the public, but has no agency of his own.
And it’s written along with disability in a really good way! The story goes out of its way to tell the audience the extent to which DH!Scar’s disability affects his life. This is both professionally, with him being made to wear robotic legs to be Hotguy, and in his personal life, him navigating a world where people like him are an afterthought (the step in his apartment being an example). The audience’s assumption might that HG is the version of him that’s the most free and able to act, but this is far from true.
As the story progresses, it becomes more and more clear that HG has less agency than Scar, not more. He has to put on an act, play the part of the noble hero while being unsure of what that means. HG doesn’t get to decide what he does, he is functionally a government pawn and I get the impression that he regularly keeps secrets from his superiors as a means of reclaiming his own agency. It’s the same reason why he has a manipulative side- it’s a way for him to be in control of a situation where his hands have been tied. I’ll get back to that!
HG is often put in hectic situations and ends up hurting others as a means to an end (profiling Jimmy to get a rise out of Grian, the entire emotional manipulation of that scene, and bringing Tango back into the school without knowing the extent of his abilities). Hotguy holds the blame, but Scar is the one that lives with that guilt. It’s invisible to the people around him, a part of an identity they’ll never know.
We see this when they go to the Fairy Fort and Scar is listening in on Tango’s conversation. He knows that Tango was hurt because of him but cannot do anything to apologize, make amends, or even bear the blame- that responsibility belongs to Hotguy. Except Scar knows HG cannot do anything to fix this, he’s the emerald soldier, the public hero, and cannot admit to anything he’s done without jeopardizing his position. So Scar holds his tongue as the guilt burns away at him, invisible to everyone else (much like his painting of a single burning tree).
But I do want to talk about his manipulative side too (AKA the reason why I’m going to punch him in the face). We first see this when HG visits Grian in the hospital and establishes a bad power dynamic between them, one where Hotguy is in control and Grian can do nothing but comply. Yes this shows what HG’s willing to do for his job, but it also shows his relationship to power. It’s what he does when his actions are unaccounted for, when nobody but the two of them can know because Grian is in a similar situation. Hotguy has to constantly worry about his public perception and about what his higher ups will do if he steps out of line- but this has no consequences, a dangerous combination of his two worlds; the invisibility of Scar and the power and influence of Hotguy.
And again, I do think he sees it as a means to an end, but something in his body language tells me he’s enjoying the power trip, and that’s is a very dangerous thing. But still, he leaves chocolates and he keeps the secret. I don’t think even he knows his intentions with either, given that Grian is important to Scar but Cuteguy is Hotguy’s target. He can’t make a decision, so he leaves room for both.
The most recent chapter showed the inverse of that dynamic, where HG is the one being made to go along with someone else- someone who has already endangered the people he cares about via the spores. HG is already familiar with having no agency of his own, but this is something VERY close to Scar in a way he can’t ignore. But of course, he can’t think about that right now so it circles back to CG, his target.
I think Scar knows that the closer he gets to Cuteguy, the closer he brings Grian to danger. If the government is working with the people who made the spores, what are they going to do to Grian, his (at this point) close friend and coworker? This isn’t a nameless vigilante, someone he can flirt with as HG then go home as Scar worry free, people’s lives are at stake. Hotguy’s lack of agency and Scar’s morality.
you guys don’t even understand what GoodTimesWithScar means to me. Funniest character to ever exist. He’s the server’s sexy pool boy and marriage counselor and he’s bad at all of his jobs and you can never tell if it’s through intentional sabotage or genuine incompetence and then you see him build the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen and log out. He’s not a himbo because he’s a genius and master manipulator but he decided a long time ago that he cares more about having abs and giant tits than proving to anyone that he’s smart. He can cry on command and make you think he’s the most helpless creature on the planet and then turn around and fire an arrow from 200 blocks away and get a headshot and kill you. And then he turns around trips over his own feet and drowns in four inches of water. I’m literally obsessed with him
