There was no part of this war, with the daily terror on the front, that Ralph found more painful that the continuation. Nothing stopped. While he and Eugene grieved, they were marching to the trenches. Meals were still served as the empty seats grew in number. There was not a day that passed that this hiss of enemy fire shook them, and on the unluckiest of days a friend was left behind while the continuation drove the others forward.
The platoon made it to their final outpost, the dank trenches just out of range of the enemy line. Eugene was still shaken, sinking further into his grief, when Ralph managed to drag him into a bunk. Ralph watched his cousin rock himself to sleep, doing his best to keep his weeping quiet.
The Lieutenant, or some lackey tasked with the work, would be sending out the notification of death soon. Ralph knew they wouldnโt get it right. He thought about Aunt Nora and Uncle Herbert reading that letter, as cold as anything.
Earnest, oh Ernie hearing the news while he was stuck at base. It wasnโt right.
They letter theyโd send wouldnโt capture just how good Edgar was. Was. The word stung even to think. Edgar was the runny nose kid they tried to outrun when the Pancakes boys raced to the lake. Ernie always made sure to slow his pace or trip over something so Edgar wouldnโt be last. The smile Edgar had when he passed his oldest brother was to good not to see.
And now they would never see it again. Edgar wouldnโt be a kid playing any more. He wouldnโt have the chance to grow to be a man. He was now a soldier, lost in combat. Memorialized in letters, written by people who hardly knew him, to those who loved him dearest.
Eugene nearly crumpled while his cousin tried to hold him steady. "Come on, Gene," Ralph was doing his best to hold back his own tears. They were still out in the open, this wasn't a place for both of them to break down. Loosing Edgar was such deep pain, Ralph knew only one of them could take that risk.
Bullets rang out from somewhere hidden in cover. Edgar hardly had a moment to react before he felt a wave of numbing pain come over to him.
His breath was shaky, as he crumpled into the soft snow. He thought of his father, mother, his sister back home, his brothers a bit closer, and the farm he'd never see again.
Earnest couldn't find comfort in the goings on at the base with his little brothers headed to the front lines. He had enlisted to keep them safe, and now here he was sitting in comfort while Edgar and Eugene were off somewhere in the unknown.
The men headed to the front line rested, trying to get warm in the bitter cold. Ralph couldn't shake this pit growing in his stomach, but he couldn't lose his spirits when the men around him needed him most.
"Come on Pancakes!" One of the men called out to Edgar. "We've got first watch."
Eugene looked back at his little brother. "Be careful out there."
Now that Nell was old enough, she found herself saying goodbye each morning to Sophie and joining Eula as a nurse in the grand house.
Eula took her under her wing, introducing her to the other nurses and showing her around the converted hospital. Nell and Eula shared the same pains as the other nurses. Many had brothers, husbands, cousins fighting on the frontlines. At least here they could help those who were sent home to early.
Nell's young adult updates.
This birthday felt far from a celebration for Nell. She was on the cusp of being a grown woman but felt very much without purpose. Her friends back at home in Britechester, wrote her letters detailing the efforts they were making to support the boys so far away. They were writing letters and sending packages.
Ralph looked at the map of where he'd be marching off to in the morning. Lines marking elevation and estimations of where enemy troupes were thought to be hiding. His fate now rested with them and the strength of the soldiers around him.
He knew he had been called upon to help keep spirits high. On early mornings before the fellas had had their rations, the higher ups looked to Ralph to rally them from their beds ready to march.
But, with bullets scheduled to be flying all around him, he felt his motivation faulter.
"Promise you won't hog all the glory." Alf's voice broke through Ralph's spiraling thoughts. His words were quiet but trying to muster any optimism he could for his brother.
Ralph smiled back at him. "You know I've always been the one of us destined for greatness and war hero doesn't have a bad ring to it." What he kept to himself was the fear that he might not be around to hear people call him that.
The men gathered to learn of their fates. As they listened to the general speak of plans and the value their potential sacrifices would have on those back home, you might have been able to hear a pin drop- if it weren't for the deafening echo each solider heard as their blood pumped loudly in their own ears.
As the infantry was named of who would be shipping out and who would be staying back, Ralph and Alfred looked to each other for some comfort.
They had never been apart for more than a night and now, as if they had rolled some bad dice, this war would part them with only a hope that they would someday see each other again.
Ralf and Alf had been given notice that orders would be going out in the afternoon. If the rumors had any merit, some fellas would be leaving the training camp for the front lines. The help stomach the anticipation, they put on their gloves.
Ralph had always been the best in anything athletic. He would outrun Alf, outkick him, outscore. Everything that wasn't books, Ralph was used to coming up on top.
For the first time in their lives, not on a paper test, Ralph found himself struggling to best his brother.
"You have some real talent here, Alfie-poo." Ralph tried to chuckle, through sweated brow, to play off just how much of a challenge his brother was bringing him.

I've had this in my likes, and I've been saving it for a rainy day. After taking some much-needed downtime this feels like a fun way to come back to the Pancakes!
I've enjoyed my time away being so miserably sick, the cultural shift of tik tok ban, the emotional crisis that was the inauguration, and a lot of ish happening around the house fire. ๐ซ
I'm gearing up to kick off WWI my doing my best with what I have and really gear up for the 20s and beyond. While I spend my weekend doing that, the doors are open.
If you are so inclined, ama or ask from above! I need a little fun to keep me going.
You're going to see a little break from me on posts while I catch up on messages, comments, and just take the time I want to make sure the great war is shared the way I'd like it to be.
For a little unrelated fun while you wait on the next installment, I was messing around with making gifs and made this
Ralph and Alf are the twin-iest of twins. Those eyes just said copy paste.
Posts about taking a break to get caught up, immediately gets covid for the first time
So officially I'll see you all in 2025! Be safe and well
