“I have learned a lot about humans in the last two decades, but they continue to surprise and intrigue me. Do you know about memes, Wander? It seems like a simple concept, and yet the humor behind them remains beyond my understanding because they continue to change.”

“Memes! Oh, yeah- here, I got a real funny one!”

Wander pulls out his phone, quickly tapping the screen, his fingers darting back and forth for a few moments before he lets out a giggle. “Here!” He passes the phone to Promosis, the screen of which features the picture of a large cat, sprawled out across a kitchen counter with it’s tongue lolling out. On the top, in white text, is ever so elegantly stated ‘i maked you dinner’ and on the bottom, still with all the finesse of the greatest authors who ever lived, ‘but i eated it. all of it’.

“AIn’t that just the funniest thing you’ve ever seen!?”

“I don’t know”, he said quietly, looking down from the woman and her gentle, inviting smile. It made him nervous. It was foreign. “No one ever called m’ nothin’.”

She kneeled down to his level, looking at him with that evil concern in her eyes. It tugged on his heartstrings. He didn’t know why he hadn’t ran when he got the chance. This was a trick- she only saved him because… Because… “No name, huh? Well, that’s alright. But hey, I can’t keep callin’ you little rascal now can I?”

The orange, fuzzy kid looked up at her for a moment, and then looked down. He didn’t know. He didn’t care. Or he tried not to.

“C’mon. You can pick somethin’, and I’ll call you that.”

He glances at her again. A name? He’s never had a name. No one had needed- had wanted to call him something that was his own. He doesn’t want to answer, to give her more leverage, but his mouth speaks before his brain can stop it.

“I-I like rascal.”

She smiles a bit wider, rising up with a bit of an ache. “Well, interesting choice. But can’t say it hasn’t grown on me too, little guy. Rascal it is then!”

She turns away, moving to the captains chair and staring out to the stars before them. “So.. Rascal. No home, no family… How’s space treatin’ y’? This your first trip?”

He takes slow steps towards her. He nods. He had never left- never left… “Home”. Not until now.

“Well, I’m glad to be guiding y’ through the endless reaches then!” She throws on a silly voice. “Welcome to Flight Nomad, we’re holding a steady altitude of undefinable, heading towards the Whirlpool Galaxy. Please seek a flight attendant for refreshments and we hope you enjoy your ride.”

He giggles, smiling for the first time, albeit weakly. She smiles even wider, pleased to see some effect.

“Well… You wanna stick around with me then, Rascal?”

He- Rascal took a moment, nervously looking from her to the stars and to the floor of the ship. It was all so much- it was all too much. Too much to believe, to believe he could have everything he never knew he wanted right now if he just said yes. Nothing worked out like that. There was no reason for it to work out now.

Still. He nodded.

“Awesome! Adventure awaits!” She throws up a holographic map, gesturing towards it. “Which planet you wanna go to buddy? The galaxy is your oyster.”

Rascal held onto that smile.

Any other alien in the galaxy would have been met with a blaster had they so much as tried to touch the commander, much less one of his hands. Luckily for Wander, the nomad wasn’t ‘any other alien’. The contact serves only to make Peepers pause for a short moment… which in turn causes a certain frustration to the watchdog.

“I was searching for you, yes. Though I think you’ll find the circumstances different from any other time I’ve done so.”

Peepers doesn’t address the first two questions, finding them almost rhetorical in nature. ‘Relaxing’ wasn’t exactly the commander’s strong suite, and anyone who’s spent any time around him surely knows that. A somewhat accusatory glare is offered to the fluffy nomad. 

“I came here to figure out what exactly you did to me.”

Wander enjoys the idea that Commander Peepers is warming up to him- the hand touch may not have been welcome, but it wasn’t rejected. That was a step. Wander was hoping Peepers didn’t ignore the bond they shared (the tears they shared), but he understood the desire on the commanders part to ignore it. To not face that.

With the statement issued, the fuzzy orange alien tilts his head. What he did to him? Last Wander checked, Wander hadn’t done anything to Peepers recently, nothing like that. “ ‘m not quite sure I get what y’ mean, Mr. Peepers!” 

A thought crosses his mind- one that sends a buzz right through his chest, but he holds off on hoping quite yet. But, with all things considered...
