David smiled, knowing exactly the stress that Kitty was feeling. “That’s because they know you as a friend and sometimes that’s an window of opportunity, too. Look, don’t beat yourself up, Kitty. It takes time to build relationships with kids. especially ones who’ve built up boundaries their lives. Think of how you and I probably were at 18.” He sat down in the chair across from her. David could remember when the school called him in to be a guidance counselor, but he’d always been a bit too mature as a youth, so being seen as an authority figure wasn’t too far-fetched. Still, he could empathize with Kitty.

Kitty gave him a small smile. ‘Thanks David.” he had a point. When the roles were changed, whens he was a student, she hadn’t always been that forthcoming. “Is there any... I don’t know, anything I can do to help the process along?”

“Yeah, sure,” she leaned against the front desk as the students shuffled out the door, eager to get away. “Um, do I have to… write a paper?” she asked as if insinuating she should be exempt from the assignment. She blushed however because the teacher already saw through her.

Kitty hesitated before saying, “You already shared so I’ll give you points for it as is. So, you don’t have to but I would like you to, if for no other reason than to better understand yourself. I know when this is all relatively new it’s... A lot to process.”

peter was new to the school. he had no idea where to go or what to do, hence why he was sitting here in the counsellors office. the boy looked up at the woman before shaking his head to answer her question. “only about five minutes ––– uhh i’m new and was told to come here, apparently you’re supposed to help me or show me around or something.”

Kitty smiled softly at the boy. “Good, I’m glad you haven’t been here long. I can absolutely show you around, just let me grab my papers. Can I get your name?” she asked as she moved to a drawer in he desk.

Kurt sat patiently in Professor Pryde’s office. He still didn’t understand why he had to see a guidance counselor every time he changed his schedule. With his mutation he had enough time in the day for extra classes but they insisted on trying to talk him out of taking them. He sighed preparing to make his case, again, when the professor came through the door way. “Hello professor. I was just waiting for you to approve my schedule change.” Maybe this time he’d be lucky and it would be approved without further questioning. Somehow he doubted that would be the case.

Kitty gave him a small smile as she sat at her desk. “Of course, Kurt. No problem at all.” she held out her hand for the paper. “How come you’re wanting a change?” she asked, eyeing him curiously. “Is everything okay in your classes Kurt?”

David was walking by when we noticed that the person behind the desk was looking a little confused or overwhelmed. He felt a little inclined to help, however he could, if he even could, so he simply walked over to the person and leaned over. “Hey, do you need an help? I can…well, I can be good at a lot of things depending on the situation. Or if you want to talk anything, that’s my job to be available for that.”

Kitty smiled up at the other, more experienced, guidance counselor. “Thanks, David. I’m okay.” She sighed softly, pushing a hand through her mess of brown hair. “Just... It’s a lot. I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to do even a quarter of what you do with them. And most of them know me as a fellow student not a teacher, and certainly not a guidance counselor.”

Exhausted. That was the only word that fit how Kitty felt after helping Clint with a demonstration in the danger room. It might not have been that tiring if she had slept the night before, but she was fairly on edge after all the recent battles. It wasn’t that strange, really. The X-Men were nearly always in one dispute or another. Yet, she couldn’t help but feel that something was brewing with the humans.

Maybe it wasn’t he battles that had her on edge. Maybe it was the government wanting both schools together. She didn’t mind working with Hellfire. It helped the students overall, she believed. But forcing them all in one place? It made them sitting ducks. Past that, it was segregation. She longed to see a day when mutants and humans lived in peace but sometimes she couldn’t help but agree with Hellfire and think that it would never come.

As she walked towards her office, her head was swirling with thoughts. She needed to push them aside and work on planning for her class the following day but it was much easier said than done. She glanced at her name by the door of her office: Kitty Pryde- Professor, Guidance Counselor.

Pursing her lips, Kitty walked into her office, pausing when she saw someone in there. “Oh,” she said. “Sorry for the wait if you’ve been here long. Can I help you?”

The teacher asked her to stand in front of the class and tell them about herself, so she stood rigidly and looked at all the strangers’ faces. “Yeah, I’m Robin. I… can’t control my powers. A few years back I got these weird ridges on my nose and forehead and… Well, I’m used to covering it up, hence the makeup,” she gestured to her normal-looking skin, the ridges only visible if you stood up close. “My mom… you know how they can be,” she blushed and pushed the hair out from her eyes, and could feel her irregular skin under the concealer. “So yeah. I don’t know what it is to ‘be’ a mutant. Just… got headaches, a friend saw the commercial for this place, I dropped out of Haverford, and voila. I hope I can… feel comfortable in my own skin in due time,” she said quietly. Her anxiety was soaring from the vulnerability, but she knew she wouldn’t always don her makeup and wig, so if everyone was aware she could look like a freak at any time then maybe she wouldn’t get stares. She didn’t even know what to expect, but suspected school everywhere was always the same (in regards to? bullying? she couldn’t even fathom everything at the moment, she could barely think straight, but she was grateful her mother didn’t insist on showing her around campus on her first day).

She suddenly hoped there were no telepaths (if that was even a thing) in the room. Her eyes widened after she silently called herself a freak and peered around the room.

Kitty smiled at her student as she listened to her talk. She knew it was jarring, at the very least, to find out you were a mutant. She herself had been completely taken by surprise when she’d fallen right through her bedroom floor. Her parents had been supportive in truth, but yet not completely normal. But what was normal when you were a mutant? Finally, she was starting to learn that.

“Good job,” she told her gently. As the bell rang, she nodded at her class as they rose to leave. “Do not forget,” she told them. “I want a paper on your personal experience coming out as a mutant. I know it may not seem it, but it does matter. Your story matters.” She turned back to the girl. “Would you please stay a moment?”
