The Evolution of Goths

Phase 0: “Invader Zim and Hot Topic are pretty cool, Tripp pants too, even though my mom doesn’t like them.”

Phase 1: “Authority figures are gross, and wearing all black makes them have amusing reactions. I think I’ll stick with this!”

Phase 2: “I’m the only one in my middle school who listens to really dark music like His Infernal Majesty, everyone else is so irritating. I’m going to write poetry about this.”

Phase 3: “I’ve started reading Nietzsche and believe firmly in existentialism with bouts of nihilism. I’m an atheist who loves Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson.”

Phase 4: “Joy Division are amazing! What is this post-punk genre and why haven’t I heard of it before? I wish I grew up in a decaying industrial UK wasteland in the 80s!”

Phase 5: “I’m branching out into more niche subcultures of Goth like deathrock, you probably wouldn’t know about that since you’re a baby bat.”

Phase 666: “Yeah, I’m into the occult now. I also smoke cigarettes, because the smoke lingering on the moonlit sky is utterly transcendental in this blackened earth.”

Phase 7: “I gave up cloves, but I now enjoy a nice glass of absinthe. Does anyone still listen to Dead Can Dance? And what happened to industrial, why did it die?”
