Hi I found something that explains the Chinese terminologies used for Kaeya, Diluc, and Crepus very well, much better than I can explain it.

Here’s a Reddit post on the relationship between Kaeya, Diluc, and Crepus, and explained by a Chinese fan while referencing to the two’s character stories. And here’s a Reddit post about that one line from Alice’s letter in Hidden Strife.

But I’ll say this as always. You can interpret the two’s relationship however way you’d like, just please don’t attack others if they don’t share the same view as you.

I’ve thought about the various interpretations of Kaeya and Diluc’s relationship that are divided due to the mistakes in the official English translation.

I think right now, I see them as sworn brothers when fanartists don’t explicitly state their relationship, but I will not see Kaeya and Diluc content as ship or sworn brothers when the artist states explicitly it’s familial Ragbros and not ship.

I wonder if some Ragbros supporters think KaeLuc supporters will see every Kaeya and Diluc content as ship regardless of the creator’s intention, hence the “KaeLuc DNI” label I sometimes see…

Inversely, as a Chinese fan, I wonder if English-speaking Chinese or Japanese fans who support KaeLuc worry that they’re accused of being problematic because some English fans aren’t aware of the nuances in the terms 义兄弟 (sworn brothers) and, most of all, 兄弟.

兄弟 can be very nuanced because of language and Chinese culture, but for now I will say it doesn’t always mean brothers in a familial sense, and can instead also be used in the context of “This is my buddy! My bro! My good friend!” or “Hey, we’ve been buddies for so long. You can tell me anything” when referring to one’s close friend. In the game, if 兄弟 is used to refer to fellow members of Knights of Favonius, it would then mean “my colleges in the knights” rather than “my (familial) brothers in the knights”.

Sometimes I see English-speaking fans trying to justify that the original Chinese terms used for Kaeya and Diluc do indeed mean brothers while having no knowledge of Chinese culture and how language plays a part of that.
