I thought I was going to find estimates on the characters' ages, but then I realized a bulk of my calculations are going to depend on how long the Rangers have been active for, and I haven't a clue.
Also, I'm bad at math.
I somehow had it in my head that because Amara couldn't have had the Heir and couldn't have founded the Rangers before coming to Azuria, the Heir's age and the Rangers active years were the same.
Which... No. No, if they were the same then Amara would have been a very busy lady in her first year in Azuria! She could have had the Heir first, or she could have formed the Rangers first, and either could have been around for a number of years before the other came to be.
The minimum I know is ten years, because ten years ago they found the Rathalos egg, and then she peaced out.
Here's what I got regardless if someone wants to pick things up from here. But I think I'm out. My brain hurts and I can taste purple.
The Heir: about 19 years old
Developers in interviews have stated that they designed the protagonist to be older than previous ones--an adult, at about 19.
Simon: about 19-21
Originally I was going to put him at the same age as the Heir, because haha twisted reflection, but then I remembered this piece of concept art of their child selves which puts Simon 2 years ahead of the Heir.
Mind, this is concept art, and things change during development; here, his name is still Marlow. I'd believe Simon's older though. Kris does look a smidge older than the young Heir (though that could be their terrible haircuts not doing them any favours. what made them go from this inoffensive cut in the concept art to that awful bowlcut?)
Eleanor: at least a year older than the Heir, 20-21
Eleanor was another one who I was going to put at the same age as the Heir, because of how similar they are. Thanks to @madamesphinxie though in a different thread about whether or not Simon has met Lucas, I know now that Eleanor has to be older than the Heir. Her older sister, Clarissa, was there when Amara left Vermeil, and because their mother had passed before they reached the capital, Eleanor had to have been born already at that time. I'm going to guess from vibes that Eleanor is 1-2 years older than the Heir--they're so similar I don't really want to go higher than that.
Thea: 13-15
This one admittedly is going more off of vibes than anything else. I think I remember someone in her Side Story saying she's a teenager, but I may be Mandela Effecting myself again. The devs have also noted her similarity to the protagonist of the first Stories game, who is supposed to be 12. I'm leaning towards 13 personally.
Gaul: 20 + (Rangers' active years)
We're a little more sure of Gaul's history than most in the party. On his inaugural mission with the Riders, he lost his father, mourned for 2 years, and was then tasked by the king to join the newly founded Rangers. I'm going to say Gaul had his first mission with the Riders at 18, since the Riders are Azuria's military force, so add 2 years to that, and then however long the Ranger's have been active for, and we get Gaul's age.
Ogden: heckin' old
Uh, look at him. He old.
Clarissa: 5-17 years older than Eleanor
In Eleanor's side story, she says her sister took care of her when she was a child, which the Heir comments that Clarissa herself would have also been a child, so she isn't too too much older than Eleanor. 17 years older is a really wide swing on my part, but it's the maximum we can go with Clarissa's age.
Corbin: at least 37
At Death's Maw, Corbin says he was there a few decades ago. Plural. So at least 20 years ago. The remaining 17 I'm taking from a character from the main games, Aiden/Ace Cadet/Excitable A-Lister, who's about 17 when he becomes a Hunter. (source for Aiden's age: monsterhunterwiki.org) Assuming Corbin also started his hunting career young, which considering how rough things are even on the other side of the Meridian, I believe, 17 is probably the youngest that Hunters get.
I don't have any solid numbers for Kora and Amara. Their history is tied to Vermeil and Vermeil is a black hole where there is no concept of time. (There's a reason why Clarissa's age range is so wide.) We don't know how old Kora and Amara were when they met, we don't know how long they were in Vermeil for, and we don't know how old they were when they left.
All I have for the two is really wide swings.
Because Kora says that Amara took her under her wing, I'm going to assume that Amara is at least 10 years older than Kora, since 'taking under one's wing' to me implies mentorship. I'm also assuming here that Kora's taken in by Amara at around the same time we see a young Kora in her Side Story, who I'm guesstimating to be 10.
That's it! That's all I got! I'm starting to smell toast. Good luck to anyone who decides to pick up the torch!
Can't sleep so I got the idea of talking a bit about the monsties that accompany Emma during the story and how they became part of the team! To explain the names, they're all named after the animals they're based on, with the exception of two.
Ratha - Rathalos
The big baby, the mvp, the original boi. For a good while, he was Emma's only friend, being her only crutch for most of her rather harsh memories. Incredibly overprotective of her, while also being very silly. Had to watch her push herself too far too many times, so now he made it his mission to ensure she rests enough. Has picked her up by the scruff multiple times to stop her from overexerting herself. Technically younger, but acts like an older brother.
Onca - Silverwind Nargacuga
Based on Panthera Onca, which is the scientific name of the jaguar.
Not actually a monstie, just a full on monster. When the egg was retrieved, Emma got injured, so the ceremony had to be delayed. Except, in that time, Onca hatched on his own, and immediately imprinted on Emma as his mother. Due to the slower aging of normal monsters, compared to monsties, Onca was a baby for most of the story events, so Emma usually carried him in her arms. Similar to Ratha, he's very protective of Emma, just in a more childlike way. In general, Ratha acts like a role model for him, but that doesn't stop his slightly mischievous streak. Due to his attachment to Emma and lack of same-species role model, he wouldn't be released back into the wild once he's grown, so eventually the castle has to deal with a fully grown baby who loves their heir very much.
Another Cantala Timberland pair, these two have to be talked about together. While working on the Zinogre and Mizutsune habitats, their eggs were found together in an abandoned den. They were hatched roughly around the same time, and they immediately stuck to each other like glue. Vulpion is the more dramatic one, especially after the injuries leading him to become a soulseer. Lupor acts as his eyes after that event, allowing Vulpion to slowly become more comfortable with the world again and regain his previous whimsy. Meanwhile Lupor acts more like an old dog, uninterested in most things, except his partner. Vulpion loves to engage in Onca's mischievous streak, causing some people to slip on soap around the stables. Nobody really knows what's going on between the two, but at this point they just settled on letting them be.
Reley - Rey Dau
Based on the etmology of Rey Dau, specifically the Re (Italian "King") and 雷/léi (Mandarin "thunder")
The diva of the group, Reley was found as the last surviving egg of the Rey Dau fought in the story. Unless you are Emma or any of the other monsties, she won't give you the time of day. And even then, she sometimes ignores the other party members. Loves to simply fly around in the sky and always bothers Emma to go on flights with her. When she was younger, she used to try and chase the other monsties around, and still does it now when her peace is disturbed.
Logic - Arkveld
Based on the first AI to be created, Logic Theorist.
Logic is a bit of an outlier amongst the team. Found before the Arkveld fight, and only hatching afterwards, he was supposed to be released but simply didn't leave. Despite his massive frame, he moves around almost quietly, like a specter haunting Emma. But he's not harmful to anyone, he just likes his personal space and will leave if someone tries to get close. Surprisingly, he also barely makes any noise, no growls, roars or anything. The common theory amongst the rangers is that maybe his vocal cords weren't fully developed, causing him to be mute. Due to all of this, Logic has made Rudy jump out of his fur multiple times by appearing out of nowhere and scaring the poor Palico.
Spent all day playing mhw so I didn't have much time to work on Emma's outfit, but before I pass out I'm gonna ramble a teeny bit about her, so at least some of her lore is out there
A core part of Emma's character is her almost anxious shyness, which is a culmination of everything around her.
I have an iron deficiency, so I give that to my sona as well, which means Emma is physically much weaker and more easily exhausted than others. It set her back by a lot when it comes to training, and is also the reason why she primarily uses a bow, due to it being lighter in weight compared to the other weapons. When I was brainstorming her kit as a playable character, I had the idea that she only has 50 stamina instead of 100, which would limit her use of skills even further. Overall she's much more fragile than what is expected of her as heir, leading to a lot of tension and adding to her mental load.
Another important add-on to the causes of her anxiety is the fact that she's not Arken's daughter. In my lore, Emma was born in Vermeil, but was brought to Azuria with Amara when she was less than a year old. This is something that is kept secret from almost everyone, the only ones who know are Arken, Amara and a few trusted counselors. Except, a while after Amara left with the second Ratha, Emma overheard some of these counselors discuss matters surrounding her, debating on what to do since they knew the secret. This event is also what causes her to sneak out at night to fly with Ratha to the Loop, in hopes of being alone to cry, only to run into Simon.
The expectations placed on her as heir, some of which she already failed to meet, also weighed heavily on her. Emma is someone who feels like she's not human enough to blend in with other people, only really bonding with monsties and Rudy, causing her to be rather awkward around other people. But she can pick up if she said something"wrong", causing her to shut down in fear of saying more wrong things.
Throwing this out into the void cause I genuinely don't know. Do we know when Amara left Vermeil?
I don't remember if at any point it was mentioned how many years ago that was. If anyone knows please lmk cause a pretty big plot point for my heir depends on that.
I finally got myself to finish stories 3 and what a game. Was insanely fun, I basically ended up playing for more than a week straight because I couldn't put it down. Honestly there's not a single character I actually dislike, they were all incredibly enjoyable, even the antagonists. By the end of the credits I also felt slightly weepy because I didn't want the game to end, it felt so short, I want like 50 more hours of just the rangers doing their things
Putting my slight insanity under the cut
I knew the post credit scene already because I don't really mind spoilers, but AAAAAAAAA HE'S SO CUTE I NEED TO GNAW ON HIM HOW CAN A MAN BE THIS ADORABLE
I only learned today that he uses the Malzeno longsword in the last fight and it had me cackling cause I used the Malzeno bow. Unintentional matching weapons to save the world.
I started writing this in the middle of my playthrough and yeah, Wisteria has a very hard 24 hours after the end of Chapter 1. She’s familiar with grief. She may not want to, but she supposes she can relearn how to do it alone.
Contains spoilers for mhs3 but game’s been out for a few months so yeah.
I'm currently tinkering more on things like playlists and the timeline for my wet cats, so for now, behold some of the screenshots of my heir because I love her <3
Playing mhs3 rn and I'm brainstorming my sona as the heir while playing along. This one is the most failgirl variation of her, girl has no idea what she's doing or how she got this far in life. Literally the human equivalent of a sopping wet cat
I'm not part of the little goody two shoes fandom, all I know about the game is via video essays cause it looked interesting enough.
However, a friend of mine is a fan and I am german, so one day she mentioned that there weren't any translations for the Kürbis Märchen song. I looked up the germany lyrics, it was simple enough, so here you guys go. If anyone has anything else they would like translated from german to english regarding this game, feel free to send me an ask, I will hopefully see it
