Mathias "Matt" RutherfordAdopted Son of Pastor Rutherford
Junior at McKinley Community College
Welcome to my page, I guess? The name is Matt, though I'm sure you either already knew that or came to that conclusion by your skills of deduction. Currently I'm studying business at McKinley Community College, where I also happen to be the Treasurer of the Student Council and member of the Chess Club, God Squad, Black Student Union, Mathletes, Tutoring Club, the GSA and the Academic Decathlon teams, so I guess you could call me an Academic, especially considering my resume is quite extensive with not only my extracurriculars, but the sports I partake in - basketball & cross country - as well as my volunteering whenever I find time in my schedule.
If you want to know anything more, though most people normally... just say hi. I promise I'm not a hard guy to get along with, and just because I may be a Christian, it doesn't mean I'll preach in your ear or tell you that you need God. Not unless you want me to.

Dani: My dad mentioned something about a possible fundraising gala for the hospital that's happening next week. He wants me to go. Are you and your family going to attend because they're always so boring and I can't/won't get through the night without someone sane around me.
Matt: I am, though my mom said it was happening next month...
Matt: I mentioned something about it to Sam, though, and I think I'm going to try to bring him - he seemed excited to go, so I don't think I could /not/ bring him now. But we could maybe all three hang together?
Sounds to me like you’re on ecstasy, to be honest.
…Why?
I can assure you, I’m not. I take pride in my body and I watch what I put into it... While I might not eat organically, I certainly am not going to put chemically engineered drugs into my system.
Because I like making new friends, no matter who they are or what society deemed to label them as - It’s just who I am. But I understand if you’d rather not, and I’ll go on my merry way and not bother you any longer.
Smile at strangers. Do good things. Give your friends some advice. Enjoy your life. Love your life. You’ll never know how you could inspire people with these simple acts of kindness. Remember: little things do matter.
That is true, I was always very impressed by your skills and having someone to go toe to toe with. I don’t know how you do it though, mad props being that busy. And I agree I love Sims 3 the most still, even though the graphics in four are super cool. I’m still mad at Pokemon Sword for giving me a Charmander after the game, I mean yes I already have it leveled up as a Charizard but I would have loved to have them for my first original adventure! I agree, I love Snap and I really enjoyed it too even despite the yelling.
What can I say? If there’s one thing that comes easily and naturally to me, it’s numbers. There is no hypothetical answer - it’s either right or it’s not and no matter what way you go about finding the answer, it’s still the same. Truthfully? I prefer it. If I don’t keep myself busy, I go crazy... When I was younger I was diagnosed with an acute case of ADHD and I found that, so long as I was able to get out that excess energy in other places, I could actually focus in class without my leg bouncing a million times a minute or my fingers thrumming against the desk and effectively annoying my desk neighbor. They are cool, I’ll give you that - it’s amazing to go back to Sims 1 or even 2 and just see how far it’s progressed, you know? Ha, yeah, that was definitely upsetting but you can probably get a Charmander relatively easy in the Wondertrade feature - or whatever it’s called in this Generation... it’s been a good minute since I picked up my Switch. Oh yes, the yelling... It certainly got frustrating when Pikachu would give you that little question mark atop his head.
Is she a superhero? Oh man.. I’ve never met a real one. I would definitely go as your date! I could bust out my alternate ego for smart events. He’s British and you’re gonna love him. I need to find my hair gel and I am totally ready for this.
I have no idea what greenhouse gasses are, but we went on a school trip to a big greenhouse for trees once and it smelled like butt. So I can only imagine how bad that is. The Switch is like the new Wii, right? Do you have that game with the ring? I played that once and it was awesome.
I suppose you could say she is one, and I’m sure her patients may think she is, but no - she’s a pediatric surgeon. It’s her job to take care of children and operate on them if they need it. I’m sure I would love it, Sam, but you should just go as yourself, because who you are is great. And yes, hair gel could work... or you could put your hair into a ponytail, too, or even a man-bun. There is nothing wrong with a good man-bun, truly.
Greenhouse gasses are the gases that we as humans emit, especially as we burn fossil fuels, and it’s harmful because what they are doing is allowing the warmth from the sun’s rays to reach Earth, but it effectively traps the heat. Which is why temperatures are rising. They’re called greenhouse gases because they act like a green house, in a way, but only on a much larger, and more toxic, level.
Yeah, the Switch is the new Wii, in a way - though I play on the pro controller as I don’t quite like getting my Switch off of its dock. But thus far, I have yet to get Ring fit... I don’t really need it as I go to a regular gym, anyway.
I will admit, honestly I was realizing we have nothing in common and your extensive schedule sounds very…busy. But then you mentioned Nintendo and Sims and Pokemon! Which instantly caught my attention! Have you played any of the new Sim expansions? Or any of the newer Pokemon games? Or do you just stick old school with Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Puzzle League?
Oh, com on... You know there’s at least one thing we have in common, Marley, and that’s the relationship we have with Math that most people can’t fathom. But yes, I did - I have a wide array of interests and things I like to do when I have free time... which is actually more than you would think, given that I only sleep roughly four or five hours a day. As for your questions, I have played the new Sims expansions though I find myself falling back to Sims 3 for its open world concept, and with the NRaas mods, it makes the story progression so much better. And I’m intending to do a replay through with Pokemon Sword during spring break, perhaps as a Wonderlocke, but I’ve yet to fully decide on that front. Pokemon Snap, though? Iconic. And despite what people say, I thoroughly enjoyed Hey You! Pikachu! too.
Yooo okay, great question. Miles is totally the most underrated in the spider-verse, after they dropped the movie I was a huge fan and he definitely moved up my list. Unfortunately I can’t really pull him off in cosplay though lol. But Peter Parker wise I always thought it was interesting because Tobey was the better Peter Parker, Andrew was the better Spider-Man and Tom is a perfect mix of the two and more in the age-range.
Good to see you too, Matt. Why’re you afraid?
Okay, explain that to me further then. What makes you think Tobey was a better Peter but Andrew a better Spider-Man - aren’t they the same person?
Well, for obvious reasons. Isn’t it daunting to have so many people follow you, knowing that they can see you make a mistake? Not to mention that it’s only a step closer towards encouraging ‘stalking’, both online and off, so it can have one feeling a bit... uneasy with the idea of it all. Especially when you factor in that people can say that they’re someone, but in actuality, they turn out to be someone else.
Because I don’t want to date. It’s not my focus in life right now and I know I may miss out on my “one true love” as my mother always says but it’s just not my focus.
Oh, you’re sweet. My only real power is in the sports I play. You’re much better at things like this than me. I get where you’re coming from though. I know this place hasn’t been the best as of late but it’s still better than not having any higher education around here.
Then don’t think of it like a date... think of it as meeting a new friend. And I’m sure any guy that your mother sets you up with will be absolutely lucky to even be in your presence, seeing as you're gorgeous, and if it were me? I’d certainly be thanking God for getting a friend like you.
Ah, but that in itself holds a lot of power. People these days, unfortunately, care more about athletics than they do academics and the arts, so if the athletics programs can prosper, it means that there will be boosters and donations coming in out of the door. All I can do is help to increase the college’s average GPA - that’s not really something that brings money in the doors, I’m afraid.
Who: Mercedes Jones, Mathias Rutherford and their mothers.
What: Mercedes and Matt find themselves set up by their moms.
When: Thursday Feb. 20th 2020
Mercedes sat across from her mother as she did once a week at their weekly dinners. Typically her father would join them but he had an emergency in Cincinnati so it was just Mercedes and Amelia. Mercedes took a sip of her drink and listened as her mother went on and on about something. She had long stopped listening.
“Mercedes are you even listening to me?”
Nodding Mercedes smiled. “I am sorry. I was thinking about this save McKinley committee. You have my undivided attention now.”
Amelia smiled. “Good. Because I think its far past time you considered settling down.”
Coughing on her drink she looked at her Mother. “What?”
Before she could answer, she stood waving over a woman and guy that Mercedes had noticed from a few charity gala’s and from school since he was the Treasurer, though they didn’t speak much.
It wasn’t unlikely for Matt to receive a text from his mother asking to go to dinner. When he was younger, they would host daily family dinners and weekly game nights, wanting to keep the family bond strong and even as the children got older and they began to move on, they still did what they could to continue with their traditions. It’s why flags hadn’t been set off when his mother suggested he wear one of his nicer outfits, like that light blue button-up that makes his eyes pop, but the one with the collar to help hide the tattoo that ran up to the side of his neck. He just figured his mom wanted him to be presentable for a nice dinner, perhaps with his sister and brother in tow.
When they got out of the car and she told him that it was just them? He started to get suspicious, but this was his mother and he was going to give her the benefit of the doubt. After all, she raised him - a child that wasn’t hers - and he wasn’t about to be ungrateful so he followed her in. Almost as soon as they entered, though, he heard someone call out ‘Vanessa!’ before he shifted his gaze and saw someone that looked familiar... and then sitting next to her? Mercedes Jones, president of the student council, Cheerio, and one of the most popular girls in Lima.
Oh great... another date, he couldn’t help but think to himself before he let out a soft sigh and walked with his mother, hands in the pockets of his slacks, as he offered a smile. “Hey, Mercedes,” he offered before clearing his throat and pulling out his hand, offering it to her. “I’m Matt.” He was sure she had no idea who he was - he was, after all, just an Academic. Just a guy in a bunch of extracurriculars that kind of blended into the background.
“Oh, good, you two know each other already,” Vanessa said, placing her hand on the boy’s shoulder. “Amelia here is married to Richard Jones... he and I often work together on juvenile burn cases and transgender teenagers. You remember me telling you stories about him, right?” she asked her son, to which Matt could only nod even though he knew precisely what this was. “Say, Amelia, why don’t we go and get ourselves a drink at the bar and let these two have a chance to get to know one another?”
You’re not a geek at all. You’re inspirational and quite a catch. Somebody is going to be lucky to have you. I think your parents probably just want you to be happy, but I agree that there’s definitely no rush to get married and start a family.
I don’t know, Rachel... People seem to really enjoy labels and unfortunately, they label me as a geek because I take pride in my academics and I involve myself in many things. But I’m glad that you don’t see me as such... I know you see me as me and that’s... well, I’m just glad I’ve got you...you know, as my friend. And I’m sure the Save McKinley Committee is grateful to have you, too.
Oh, yes! Spring break plans. I’ll probably go to New York for a few days or somewhere with a beach. I’m not entirely sure yet. What about you?
I think I’ll probably just spend it getting reacquainted with my neglected Switch... and perhaps try to get in a couple of Max Raid battles in, too, provided that people aren’t trying to cheat the system to get the Gigantamax pokemon.
I know that feel. My mom is constantly trying to set me up with people but I always bail on the dates she tries to set up.
It’s so wonderful to have you in this little committee as well. I’m more confident that the school can be saved now that I know you’re here.
I know I might be hypocritical asking this, but why? What if, just maybe, it could be someone you really hit it off with? And even if it doesn’t turn out to be a soul match, at the very least, you could wind up making a friend. At least, that’s what I tell myself after going on yet another date that my mom set me up on.
Thank you, though I’m not quite sure I’m going to be as helpful as some - especially you. But seeing as this is the only opportunity that some of my friends have for getting a secondary education, it seems only right that I stand up for it. If not for my future, but theirs.
Oh, can I meet your mom?! I love moms! I wish my mom was gay so I could have two. Like how Rachel has two dads. I aim to be quite the guy! I just wish I was smart like you.
You mean like… making sure we give it oil changes? But for reals, it’s the only one we got, right? And the penguins need nice to scoot on. No… No plans yet! I usually just stay home ‘cause I don’t got money. What are you doing?
I mean, you can, but she’s a pretty busy woman - saving children’s lives often does that - though I’m sure there’s a gala happening soon that she’ll want me to go to. You could be my plus one, if you want. And I can even give you one of my tuxes... I have so many. You succeed, though you don’t need to be smart like me, because you’re smart like you - though if you really need help, my offer to tutor you still stands.
In a way, yes. Whereas your bike might need an oil change to keep it running, the Earth needs Oxygen and less greenhouse gases to keep it running. But you’re right, it is the only one we have and we need to treat it better if we want our future generations to thrive. There are still things one can do during spring break - as for myself? I’m hoping to try and take advantage of the free time to get back to my neglected Switch and do another playthrough of Pokemon Sword. And maybe try and do some online max raids, since I haven’t really been able to do it that much.
