Fire 04 by holorime featuring merino wool socks
A piece of paper rested on Fire's bed - strikingly similar to one on Bren's bed. The messages were generally the same, but... -- "Hey, Fire! Dude, I gotta say, bein' roomies with you and Bren was probably one of the best things about this place. I wish I coulda said goodbye in person, but I woulda missed the plane! 'Sides, this ain't goodbye. I know I'll be seein you two again soon! You can come vacation in Sunyshore, aight? I'll stop now - don't wanna get sappy! Brolove forever, Buck."
When he returned back to the dorms after classes, Fire knew before he found the note that something about their familiar old room had changed. One glance at the piece of paper, carefully laid on his pillow, was all it took before Fire began to piece it all together.
Maybe it was just that the room was cleaner-- that Buck had to tidy up and pack his things away, take back his videogames and cheerleading trophies and loaned comic books-- but Fire was still quite sure that nothing about the place, or the whole school, really, would be the same.
The boy gingerly picks up the letter, reads it slowly, then scoffs before folding it into quarters and tucking it in his pocket. Classic Buck. Always so high drama. He'd have to give his bro a call tonight.

Kris wakes up in a dormitory all her own. She walks across campus, eyes right ahead of her, passing the occasional student or two. This walk is a long one, a quiet one, and when she reaches her destinationānone other than her known haunt, Taco BellāKris trudges to the counter and asks the lone cashier not for a fRuItIsTa FrEeZe but something less festive. She wasnāt in the mood for a fiesta anyhow.Ā
But she orders a party pack and a cup of ice water, putting the box of crunchy-shell tacos on a tray next to a fistful of hot sauce and scanning the lobby for a seat. Not like she needs to. Who actually goes to Taco Bell in the middle of night?Ā
Kris doesnāt search for long; heading right for her regular spot in the corner: a large table with two seats and a semicircle booth. It was usually filled with her and her pals cutting class or cutting jokes. Her tray hits its surface and she stands a moment, taking a look at the empty chairs and empty table, before settling into the booth.Ā
With a short sigh she tears open a packet of sauce and sucks the redhot condiment from the plastic. Not exactly the best of table manners, but who was going to say anything?
It's often said the way to man's heart is through his stomach-- so this evening, when Fire's heart was in a rather desolate state, the senior headed straight for everyone's favorite Mexican fastfood chain. He knew the place well, of course, but it really wasn't the same without Buck. Maybe that was why this Crunchwrap Supreme wasn't doing it's usual magic.
He sets his half-finished wrap down, drumming his fingers against the table. It's lonely in here. Quiet, despite the frantic purple and green decorations on the walls. And mostly empty. Maybe Fire should have asked Brendan to come, but that would only make them both feel worse. He had a history test to study for, anyways.
The doorbell chimes, waking Fire from his reverie. Of all the possible people in the world to show up in the middle of the night at a Taco Bell, it had to be Kris, didn't it? He tries not to watch as she orders and takes a seat near the back on the other side of the restaurant. Miraculously, he's gone unnoticed.
Now what? He could leave-- strangely, he's not hungry. Or... (He spares another glance at the blunette. She looks sad.)
God damn it.
He clears his throat. "You probably shouldn't drink that," he says. He's done it loads of times before.
Flowers. Beautiful, colorful, aromatic flowers. Marley wasnāt one toĀ frolicĀ but she may as well have been, because, really, what else does one do when theyāre surrounded by a million blossoms as far as the eye can see, and a bubble and three sparkles for each spring bloom? Ah, yes, truly, thiswas paradise, this metaphorical representation of peace, with clear skies and a double rainbow arcing across the sky and big cotton-ball clouds and faint piano music and a gigantic finger reaching down from the heavens and threatening to squash her and the surrounding flowers into tiny specks of dustā
Wait. Double take.
She didnāt wake up groggily, not outwardly, anyways. The way she raised her head from her desk was so sudden and sharp that she may not have been asleep at all. Granted, her pale forehead had a red mark on it and a light pink flower seemed to be stuck soundly right at that spot, a reminder that some people should be more careful about what they sleep on.
She stared at the boy, unblinking. He had said something right? Oh no⦠she hadnāt quite caught it⦠What could she sayā¦!? What should sheā
āā¦Helā¦loā¦ā
Fire's not good at faces, but this is one he's certain he's never seen before. Sweet face-- lidded eyes-- wearing a lot of black. Yeah, definitely a new face. There weren't a lot of goths around campus.
He blinks, remembering that staring is kind of rude, and breaks out into a tentative smile. "He...y...y..."
After a pregnant moment, the senior nods. "Sorry for disrupting your sleep," he begins, "but the bell just rang... so..."
"You new around here?"
Another Monday, another day in class. While boarding school certainly had itās perks (a more⦠interesting social life, lots of money, good sports programs,) the classes were still as monotonous as Fire had ever known back home.
Head resting on his arm, he copies the diagrams from the board as the teacher drones on and on and on. His notes are really sloppy⦠itās likely that heāll have no idea what that odd scribble in the corner means when heās rereading them before the final, but at the current moment the second-semester senior could not be less bothered. When has he ever bothered, really? To his left, he notices that her classmate has fallen into a fit of light snoring. Truly, it's a miracle Fire's awake at all.
When the bell rings at the end of class, all the other students shuffle out. Fire is still in the room, taking his sweet time before next period, when he notices that the same student hasnāt stirred. Should he wake them?
Might as well. Tentatively, he approaches the sleeping classmate and prods them lightly in the arm. There is no response.
āYoā¦?ā
In the midst of it all, Blue canāt help but take a moment to appreciate the fact that for once, she has someone to share a prank with. Unwitting accomplices were common enough, but actually partnering with someone rather than working and taking the enjoyment on her own was rare. And itās niceā she isnāt the type to get overly sentimental about things like this, but Fire has certainly made the night all the more enjoyable. She may have been slightly less methodical, slightly more sloppy in her execution, but sheās having more fun and isnāt that what matters most, really?
She raises a brow when he tells her to lay down in the snow, taking a moment to determine whether heās drunk or just crazy. Regardless, she gives a shrug and follows suit, bending her knees to avoid bare legs on the snow and crossing her arms behind her head.
And unsurprisingly, heās right. She smiles up at the sky, reveling in the array of colors and the sound of the whistling and pops of the fireworks. āItās freezing cold down here,ā she informs him, wrinkling her nose. āBut it does look a lot better!ā
Absolutely worth it.
It must be two in the morning by now. Exhausted, elated, and slightly drunk-- he'd be lying if he didn't admit that-- Fire closes his eyes and allows himself to revel in the moment. The first two hours of the new year, and he was quite sure he hadn't felt more alive in his whole time at the academy. It was kind of odd, though, that the faculty hadn't tried to stop them.
A quick check of his senses. Sight: Behind his lids, he was still pretty sure he could see the dull pulse of reds and ochre fireworks. Smell: Just sulfur, really. Sound: Not doing so well at the moment, with the way his ears were ringing. Touch: Biting cold. Taste: Something vaguely bitter that didn't take too well with him... and then, of course, the slight perfume of alcohol.
He opens one eye at Blue's complaint, scoffing lightly. "What? You want my coat or something?"
But he smiles and tosses it to her anyways. That was his job as the accomplice-- to be prepared for when Miss Mastermind wasn't.

Okay, uhhh⦠maybe Iām not the best person for thatā I should focus on the team, I understand Iāve been kind of⦠distant lately. I CAN HELP YOU FIND A TUTOR THOUGH!Ā
No... I think... I think that's from chemistry... It has to do with Deoxys, right? [He rubs his chin thoughtfully, then abandons the gesture and sighs.]
Sorry coach, unless you can find a miracle worker... I'm sunk. I can still come t' practice for now, but you might wanna be looking for a new center.
e4flint said: Hey thatās stupid!!! They shouldnāt have even had you guys in the tournaā NO! NO! WHY ARE YOU QUITTING
HEY HEY!! NO NO-- COACH NO HEY!!! I... I might have to! If I don't get my grades up! 'Cus I'm here on a scholarship and with our team doin' so bad, the headmaster probably is gonna be stricter about crap like... biology... and math. [Colon caret left parentheses.]
[ study session | hika & fire ]
Checking her phone for any missed messages, Hikari walked into the library and sat down at the first empty table she saw. A couple of weeks back, she had promised Fire that she would help him with his classes so he could stay on the basketball team, and he was finally cashing in on the offer. Just earlier he had texted her about meeting up, and as soon as she got a free second she rushed over.
Hikari set her book down on the table and hung her bag on the back of her chair. She figured that tutoring Fire in biology probably wouldnāt be the easiest thing in the world, but she didnāt like going back on promises. Plus she thought he was a pretty cool guy and there was no real reasonĀ notĀ to help him.
Putting her hair up in a high ponytail, she opened up her notebook, then tapping a pencil and waiting for him to arrive.
In all of his years at the academy, Fire had never really spent much time at the library. It seemed so much more convenient to spend his time in the comfort of his own dorm-- food court leftovers right there in the minifridge, SportsCenter playing in the background-- was there anywhere better to be? But now, as temperatures grew warmer and the ground thawed outside, it was definitely crunch time for the senior. Spring was fast approaching, and that meant third quarter grades. His low marks across the transcript meant a scholarship at risk: he really would have to pull his weight to stay at school, much less on the basketball team. Hikari was always at the top of the class, and as she had generously offered to tutor him, he wasn't in much of a position to question her methods.
Fire rounds the aisle, clutching a tall stack of books to his chest. He had gotten here early-- don't be fooled, he did take some things seriously-- and had taken a moment to peruse the shelves. At the sight of his favorite junior, Fire grins ear-to-ear and hurries over to his seat, letting his pile of books spill out onto the table. The titles say things such as How To Make Pop-Up Books and Baby Knitting Patterns, with puppies and toys across the cover. "Yo!" he says in loud whisper, eagerly flipping to a page about snowflake cuts. "Thanks for coming, Hika. I really owe you, big time."
But first there were more important things to attend to. "I just found the how-to section! I didn't know there was so much neat stuff here... like, did you know the difference between mountain and valley folds?"
Blue canāt manage not to smile at how obviously pleased Raichu is with the ordeal at hand; vaguely she is reminded of a certain Pikachu, and perhaps for a moment her smile turns a bit melancholic before she rights herself and turns back to actuallysupervising Granbullās work.
āNot for fun,ā she responds easily; itās hard to tell what she means by it, or even if it is meant to be a joke. Her expression is mildly vague, smile mysterious as she sets to work helping them unload and arrange the shells. āI do know what Iām doing though, if that helps. Iām very good with things that go boom.ā
She winks quickly, giggling for a moment before she straightens herself and appraises the rest of their load. Itās really quite astonishing just how much firepower sheās managed to get her hands onābut then, with as many connections as she has, it isnāt very surprising. With enough strategic placement, they could probably take out a good part of the academy itself with fireworks aloneābut that isnāt the goal, obviously. Pesky though she is, occasionally even resorting to minor vandalism when incredibly bored, property destruction is most certainly not in herĀ repertoire.
At FIreās gentlemanly invitation, Blue gives a playful curtsy and draws out her lighter. āYou may want to stand back, deary,ā she says, and waves a hand in his and Granbullās direction until they have putĀ adequateĀ distance between themselves and the load.
With that, she pushes down the switch and in one smooth motion, sets the first wick alight; turning on her heel and taking off to join Fire at a safe distance, she looks up just in time to see the flare ignite. With a sound that was sure to wake up anyone who hadnāt already been roused by their ruckus, the sky comes alive with colors. Bright white first, flares shooting off in every direction as the cackle continues on, she places a hand on her hip and simply laughs at the marvel of it.
The night had certainly taken some surprising turn, but what else could you expect when with the enigmatic Blue? Fire nods to his accomplice as she gets in position. A far-off look is caught somewhere in his eyes-- right before a deafening explosion is not the best time to be lost in thought, but he can't help it when the pangs of regret and slight humiliation from earlier tonight are still so fresh in his mind. So he doesn't quite catch the implications of her off-hand remark, nor does he realize what's going on until he hears the fizzling of the wick. Blue shoves into him a second after, and he's brought into the immediate present once again. Why waste any more time thinking on the past?
For what seems like the millionth time that night, Fire's running in some random direction at full-speed, laughing and not daring to look behind. His sense still isn't the keenest, so as soon as they're some distance away he collapses over into the grass. The fireworks are blooming and shriveling away in the darkness with manic intensity like... an... acid trip. I'm running out of metaphors to describe fireworks.
He shares a smirk with Blue, then lets out a satisfied exhale. A combination of intoxication and fatigue compels him to lay his head down.
"Hey," he says rather suddenly. "Lay down. I know it's, like, snowy, but the view's better from here."
FIRE MY MAN THE FIREY COMET OF THE BASKETBALL TEAM THE STEAMING PLAYER THE FIRE OF THE TEAM haha get it-- How's it going man? I was hoping to get in contact with you 'cus I can't reach the rest of the team. You up for practice soon this week? We gotta shape up!
