☽3 Staple Witch’s Recipes☾
happy mabon, my friends!
take note these are my personal takes on some old-fashioned recipes. please, feel free to alter these in any way, as according to your circumstances or wishes!
FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR:
the lore on this one varies, but the general historian’s consensus is that four thieves’ vinegar, at it’s time, was thought to protect or ward off the bubonic plague. it’s a base of vinegar(of any sort), infused with herbs/spices of medicinal or disease-warding value. nowadays, spells for protection or banishment list four thieves vinegar as a component. it’s even sometimes uses in hexes/curses, the intention being to make a sweet thing sour; i.e., a relationship or friendship.
INGREDIENTS:
• white vinegar
• dried cloves
• garlic(minced, chopped, whole, any kind!)
• rosemary tops
• thyme
• lavender buds
• whole black peppercorns.
combine all of the ingredients in your desired containter. wait for a few weeks(4-8), and strain out the herbs. afterward, your vinegar is ready to use!
tips: if nobody has any allergies to any ingredients, use a finger to spread some on your or someone else’s forehead, to prevent or drive away existing nightmares.
if you want to drive an unwanted guest away, add a few drops of the vinegar to a meal before serving it to them.
BLACK SALT:
black salt, for many, is a staple spellcasting ingredient. it’s typically composed of ashes, charcoal and a base of salt. it’s known for it’s ability to drive away negativity or sources of it; i.e., nasty spirits, unwanted guests, curses, et cetera. it’s good for the breaking of hexes/curses and protection, and even for casting some hexes and curses of your own.
INGREDIENTS:
• charcoal(from a fire preferably, bonus if it’s from a ritual fire)
• ashes of incense
• ashes of herbs(being sage and cedar)
• iodized salt.
use a mortar and pestle to combine the charcoal, incense ashes, and herbal ashes. work it all into a fine powder, then add that powder to your salt. place your combined ingredients into a container of your choosing. bless or consecrate the salt, if you so desire.
tips: you can sprinkle black salt around a room to absorb and trap negative energy. sweep the floor and collect the salt, and dispose of it.
you can also combine your four thieves vinegar with a pinch of black salt, and use it as a floor wash for the same purpose.
MOONWATER:
moon water, basically, is water charged with the energy of the moon. anything you’re directed to use water for, moon water can enhance or strengthen it. it can be used on it’s own for blessing, cleansing and charging. it’s a highly versatile tool and ingredient, and due to that, a very popular one amongst all kinds of witches.
INGREDIENTS:
• rain or river water(again, just my take. if you can only use tap water, use tap water!)
• a clear quartz crystal(to attune the energy to the water)
• a bowl(preferably clear)
• a container of your choosing.
place your water in the bowl. then, submerge your quartz crystal in the bowl, and place the bowl somewhere where it will see as much moonlight as possible(a full moon is best!). once the sun rises, transfer the water into a container.
if your water is drawn from the rain or a stream(or any “living” source), be sure to boil it or otherwise filter it before ingesting it!
tips: water a plant with moonwater, if it seems to be wilting or unhappy to give it a little boost.
brew tea with your moonwater, especially teas of a magical or ritual purpose.
dab your cheeks with moonwater for glamour purposes.

again, keep in mind that these are just the way i make these things! there’s a plethora of ways do do any given thing, especially when it comes to witchcraft.
stay magical, my loves!

A Spread for Cards that are Hard to Read
Do you have any of those cards that when they turn up they make you really uncomfortable and you never feel like you can properly describe their meaning to someone you’re reading for? I know I do – The Lovers, The Queen of Wands, and The Emperor have haunted me since I started reading. Cards that are difficult to read can teach us a lot about ourselves and can help guide our shadow work.
I’ve been toying with this spread a little and I wanted to put it out there for others to try out. The idea is that you let the deck speak to what’s blocking your understanding of a given card – which if you’re interested in shadow work, often highlights areas of ourselves that need to be given attention.
The spread is laid out as follows.
Method
Shuffle the deck and find your chosen card. Place it in the first position. Take the cards immediately following it or proceeding it depending on which will have enough cards to fill every position in the spread. An alternative is to draw the card, put it in first position, shuffle how you choose, and draw the top cards to fill the remaining spots.
Positions
The first card is pretty straight forward. Choose a card that’s giving you trouble, that makes you uncomfortable every time it comes up. I think people tend to pick major arcana cards here but don’t be afraid to pick a minor card. All blocks have something to teach us
The second card is how your past influences how you read this card. It could be an event, a belief, an unresolved fear – anything really. Our past often dictates our expectations of the future. So when a card is difficult to read it often points to an expectation we’ve picked up from our past and it either challenges that expectation or confirms something uncomfortable.
The third card is how your perception of yourself is influencing how you read the first card. Similar to the second card, when a card is difficult to read it often challenges our image of ourselves. It may make us feel like bad people when we think highly of ourselves or vice versa, highlight an area we’ve struggled with, or make us question the narrative we tell ourselves.
The fourth card is how others in your life inform your reading of the first card. Often we see other people in the cards, ones we like and ones we don’t. Our feelings for or about that person will often undermine how we read this card in relation to ourselves and to other people.
The fifth, sixth, and seventh card are all what those influences can teach us about ourselves. The lessons they highlight can also offer clues as how to unblock your reading of the main card.
Conclusion
I hope folks find this spread helpful. I’m still tweaking it and toying with it. If you use it to create something new or come up with a different way to do a similar task, please reblog and/or let me know! I’d love to boost more materials on this.
As always, take the best and leave the rest and if you have any questions let me know!

Little tips for the college witch!
I know personally how hard it can be to maintain doing the witchy things you love when you’re at college. Here are some things you can do that don’t take long while you’re at college!
1.) Do a one card tarot reading for yourself! My favorite is just asking: “What should I work on today?” This prevents any worrying cards from popping up and discouraging you in your academic endeavors.
2.) Sigils sigils sigils! Write them in your notebooks, on your art supplies, whatever! Scroll through this tag and check out what they have!
3.) Use your desk as a mini sacred space! You almost always have a desk at college, so if you do, fill a space with your little witchy things. One shelf of my desk holds crystals, a salt lamp, my tarot cards, and essential oils and herbs!
4.) Cleansing: My favorite method of cleansing is by using sage, but we aren’t allowed to have smoke in the dorms. Instead, I place my crystals near a salt lamp! The light from the lamp with cleanse the objects placed near it. You can just leave your lamp on while you’re in the room, and it’ll do the cleansing for you! (Please note that not all crystals should touch salt! Some can be highly toxic, so please do your research.)
5.) Spell jars! You might not even be allowed to have candles in your room, or you might need to be a little more low-key with roommates. Spell jars are a great low-key way to do spells. Here is a great masterpost
6.) Crystals! Throw a crystal in your bag with you when headed off to class. Citrine is an easy and affordable crystal that is great for confidence!
7.) Don’t be discouraged. A witch that only practices once a month is still a witch. If you can’t do any of these other tips, just practice the more internal practices of your own craft. This can include being mindful, having a vegetarian/vegan meal, and even meditating for a quick second while in the bathroom stall! Your craft is your own. (These are just some examples. Follow your own craft and beliefs when doing this.)
I hope some of these tips helped you! Feel free to add some more.
For all the college witches out there. :)
