I like the idea of the sea three having a rocky relationship with each of their parents. I think that’s an important aspect of establishing them as morally gray verging on goodhearted. The whole “you shouldn’t want to be liked by evil people” notion.
Uma
Uma has a tense relationship with her mother Ursula, but only because they’re both so alike — far too intelligent to be trapped in the food industry and more unhappy with the situation than with each other. Ursula tells Uma she should be grateful to work at her restaurant, but she doesn’t truly believe that. Any daughter of hers shouldn’t be happy with this life. Urusula knows she would feel the exact same way in Uma’s shoes, but they can’t have that conversation. They will argue, but there’s a begrudging respect on both ends.
Uma is incredibly clever and, on some level, knows her mom can’t be satisfied going from the most powerful sea witch to serving fish and chips. She knows Ursula is trying to survive in their situation while Uma is trying to rebel against it. Because of this, she doesn’t resent her mother for that, only for stifling her own freedom when Uma wants to break free and get more out of life. As for her father, Uma never knew him and didn’t want to.
Gil
His father, Gaston, tries to pressure him with his toxic masculinity, misogynistic values, what it means to “be a man” etc. This hasn’t yet worked on Gil because he’s naturally goodhearted. Gaston, in his narcissistic delusion, thinks that Gil values his wisdom and hasn’t really noticed that he hasn’t been “successful” in that regard. Gaston thinks he is shaping his boy in his image and so their relationship is ok under this disillusion. Gil doesn’t understand a lot of what Gaston is trying to teach.
I like the idea that his mother Laurette (The Yellow Bimbette) loves Gil and tries to instill better values in him when they’re alone. There’s no way she’d stay happy in her marriage over time, with Gaston commenting on her fading beauty as she ages and instructing Gil in front of her to “Do what I could not and marry the most beautiful woman in town!” Gil gets the sense that she regrets marrying his father, but she’s made her bed, and now she just tries to tell her son how looks aren’t all that important when it comes to choosing a partner. Gil loves his mom and wears her signature color scheme.
Harry
Harry really admires his father and desperately wants to be recognized by him. Hook is embarrassed by Harry because of his eccentricity, but Harry is partly eccentric because he can’t get his father’s approval — a vicious cycle. Hook sees the same boyish frivolity in Harry that Peter Pan had and it irks him (who would have thought Hook, who spent his life fighting literal children, wouldn’t like children lol). As a result, Hook didn’t work with Harry much whilst he was growing up, expecting him to naturally pick up the ropes without much guidance. While Harry is eager to please, his mistakes disappointed Hook at every turn. Despite this, Harry is still proud to wear the Hook name.
Hook wanted a strong-minded, clever, natural-born pirate to one day take over for him as captain. As it is, Harry’s unstable mental state, low intelligence, and desire for praise make him a follower, not a leader. Hook was insulted Harry tried to entice Tick Tock to bite him, as Hook spends his days trying to get away from the creature who traumatized him, and he certainly doesn’t want the crocodile reminded of how delicious his bloodline is. Hook is ashamed that Harry is First Mate, not captain, to Uma’s crew instead of starting his own. As for Harry's mother, Harry never knew her, but pleasing one parent has proven hard enough for him so he doesn’t feel the absence.
I had a lot of fun painting this one~ That classic celestial gold and blue combo just can't be beat. I love Agott's character growth though the story, like the phases of the moon, ever changing 🌒🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑
Of all the main characters, I think there's only Olly left to be brimmed haha.

If Ben were to die without an heir, despite his father still being alive and well, apparently the crown would go to Chad Charming, whose father is also still alive and well. Why is this? Ben inherited the throne from his father, which implies primogeniture, but Chad's inheriting it would, I think, imply tanistry, unless there's some relation between the two families that I'm not aware of. In either case, however, I still want to know why the throne would go to Chad instead of any of the adults in the empire. (And yes, I know the Doylist answer to this is because it's a story for children, so in this world, children are in charge. But that doesn't stop me from being interested in the Watsonian answer.)
i think its so fucking funny how retrospect makes this like the emptiest threat ever like there just is not any version of reality where this is an argument olruggio even has the slightest possible hope of winning from any angle. and whats also funny about this is qifrey who already knows he has won this argument sitting here like this pretending to hear him out.
body language of a guy who is just waiting patiently for the appropriate timing to tactically nuke the conversation by threatening to commit suicide by cop. and then of course the cherry on top is his reaction.
which is still a funny line even when you think olruggio is just kind of a guy who got sent here in an official capacity to keep an eye on things but is much much funnier once you realize that he has been constructively enabling qifrey for like the past 15-20 years and is an active and willing participant in everything happening who is just also complaining about it. sorry dude you have repeatedly and at great cost hitched your wagon to the pathologically reckless outcast who does not respect the law. you are reaping what you have sown. might be one of the world champions of reaping what you have sown in all of fiction if we're being honest here.
but also since he was so busy with work that he didn't even realize they had a 4th kid now one has to assume he was also really hangry when this was happening and under those circumstances can we really blame him for briefly wanting to get coco disappeared. i think not.

will people ever learn that animation is not an inferior medium of storytelling and actually some stories are fundamentally much better suited for animation and trying to make them live action might be doing them a huge disservice
