ㅤㅤHello, again! I'm back with a brand new tutorial, which could be genuinely universal in it's application with time and practice, but is mainly for editing images within Final Fantasy XIV
ㅤㅤIn this tutorial, I'll be showing you how to take an image and add false lighting from a window or an opened door, and hopefully teaching you a bit about light theory and how light falls on the body in art.
ㅤㅤWe'll be turning this image on the left to the image on the right:
ㅤㅤFor full transparency, it's best that you take the time to look up art tutorials on light theory for characters in order to grasp how light should fall on a person, this tutorial for the basic theory of how light works in drawings is pretty good. But you can find any on your own, and take a look yourself.
ㅤㅤPlease also note that if this is a photo of a character that you are needing this tutorial for, that you should look up a tutorial on how light affects darker and light skin tones to more accurately and realistically understand the lighting. ( Specifically, the darker the skin tone the more light reflects off the surface. )
ㅤㅤMight possibly need some color theory information as well, depending on the creative path you may be taking, haha.
ㅤㅤBut once you have some idea of that, let's just try our best to make an image that looks realistic with a casted light/sun rays.
ㅤㅤFirst, let's get this set up. You'll either want to be in a lighting neutral area (no windows), or windows to the side for this affect. Once you find the perfect spot, let's get into gpose.
ㅤㅤDo everything you normally would, such as getting a pose done, working with your preferable reshade settings, etc.
ㅤㅤAfter fooling around with the pose, I've already got quite a good image, but there's a problem: One of my housing items is creating lighting already, so I've got to neutralize this.
ㅤㅤIn order to do that, just head into the lighting tab of group pose settings
ㅤㅤAnd tinker around with the lighting, specifically having the light from head on, making sure to watch shadows to make sure it follows the idea you have of where the light should lay in the final image.
ㅤㅤAfter fiddling around, I find something pretty satisfactory. Don't worry about how light the image is, it doesn't need to be dark in order to do this. As long as the image has detail integrity, it should work fine!
ㅤㅤOnce you have an image that you enjoy, go ahead and boot up photoshop or the image editor of your choice (should work in most editors that have layer options)
ㅤㅤSo now we have it there in photoshop, let's edit a few things. This is where I'd recommend some editing for coloring or sharpening or blurring, whatever needs to be done to the image, I'd do that first since then you have an idea of what kind of scene coloring you want.
ㅤㅤBasic editing should look like how you want it, I've chosen to make my character have cooler tones and less warm/orange coloring.
ㅤㅤClick the main image layer and start working on the next phase from there, which is... Take your brush, make it large, and start drawing black on it, figuring out where you want the light to shine through. Like so:
ㅤㅤI've chosen to have the light hit the character's right eye, blocking out the space as needed just to visualize where I want this to go. However, I now need to remember that the character is not a flat surface, but 3 dimensional, so I need to warp the lines of the direct light just a bit so it reflects that it's on a 3d surface.
ㅤㅤFor that, let's make a layer mask, and start fucking around.
ㅤㅤNow we've got something like this... Now take the layer style, and lets turn it to something, doesn't matter exactly what style you want, just what looks realistic to you. Good choices are: Multiply, Darker Color, Lighten, or Softlight.
ㅤㅤAlso don't be afraid to tweak and fiddle with the layer opacity as well, until it's at a point that you enjoy
ㅤㅤYou could leave this here, and call it a day, and I think that would work fine, but something you have to remember is that not all lighting is purely white, but are colored in various ways.
ㅤㅤConsider the light source, and where it might be coming from. As this is a fantasy game, let's think about it as though the light is candle light, or sunlight.
ㅤㅤBoth those lights are warm toned lights, not cool toned. It'd be better to take a yellow, and brush it over the highlights. Take time to fool around with this as well.
ㅤㅤThat looks far more realistic, like a door opening or sunlight peaking through a blind.
ㅤㅤRemember to please tinker around. Overlay, or Soft Light, are very good modes for the color for the lighting to take, then just fool around with the opacity.
ㅤㅤWith that, you can definitely consider yourself done, but please don't hesitate to play around with the settings of what you're doing. Like, for example, trying different colors!
ㅤㅤLet's slap some gradient on top of the image. Fiddle around with those first initial layers for editing the colors to fit the new style of the image better, then tinker with the layer style.
ㅤㅤAt this point, we just want to highlight the color hitting the character more realistically, so we want to lighten the directions in which the light might hit. Let's look at the gradient, the directions, and figure out a cool way for the light to strike the character
ㅤㅤNow let's take a gander at bisexual lighting in real photography to understand the lighting process.
ㅤㅤAnd apply that to the character, following the general idea. Pink is higher up, blue is lower down, they seem to block one another.
ㅤㅤAgain, time to tinker around with Layer styles! If it feels really silly or off, know that you can go in and edit the thinkness and change the lighting as you see fit!
ㅤㅤSmall tip: Using a gaussian blur might help with the realistic flow of light.
ㅤㅤThis image in particular is gunna need a bit of cleaning up, so make a layer mask on the image and start cleaning up. Or use the blur tool and blur to your hearts content, until it feels Just Right to you personally.
ㅤㅤNow I think the image needs a bit more detail. Looking at the reference image, there's more blocky parts of the colors that intersect with one another.
ㅤㅤAbout that background, though... Perhaps darkening the area around the character might be a good idea.
ㅤㅤLeaving the figure in the image to pop out even more with the vibrant colors.
ㅤㅤNow you know a little bit on how to fool around with artificially made light. I highly recommend a continual study and learning of lighting through interacting with photography or with art, if this is something that genuinely catches your fancy.
ㅤㅤHopefully, you've learned something of value from this tutorial, and I'm excited to see what people are likely to make with this information.
ㅤㅤThank you so much for taking the time to read this tutorial! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to message or send an ask my way.
ㅤㅤHi, just a little tutorial to discuss all things gifmaking to help anyone out who needs it.
ㅤㅤThe very very very first step, is to have a video either prerecorded by yourself, or one from the internet that is downloaded at the highest quality you possibly can.
ㅤㅤFor this particular tutorial, i'll be using this video as an example.
ㅤㅤThe final product should just be a simple gif for now, please click the read more to figure out how I made this simple gif:
ㅤㅤFirst things first. If you need a place to download videos for edits, this website is a great one. Once you've got that downloaded you're going to need to open up photoshop.
ㅤㅤWhen you're there with it open, you can start by going to File > Import > Video Frames To Layers
ㅤㅤIt will immediately pop up with a window saying 'Initializing Video to Layer' or immediately prompt you to select the file
ㅤㅤGo to the file that has the specific video you want converted, and open it in photoshop. After a little bit a window should appear, looking like this:
ㅤㅤMake sure to have Make Frame Animation selected, and consider Limit To Every ___ Frames as well, otherwise the gifs can become very bulky depending on the size of the gif you want. Note that the file size of the gif does matter greatly, hence why you see a number of gifsets have things seperated into several different gifs.
ㅤㅤThis part of the window allows you hit play on the video, and cycle through it quickly.
ㅤㅤUnder that, with that bar with one full arrow and then two half arrows, you can move them to the spot in the video you specifically want to use for the gif.
ㅤㅤNote that the selection does not need to be perfect, you can go in very easily and delete the layers that you do not want in your animation, so don't stress too hard on the initial selection.
ㅤㅤOnce you've made your selection, photoshop will process it and you should soon see all the layers you selected like any normal photoshop image.
ㅤㅤNext, if you want to see and make sure that your selection is correctly made into a gif, go over to Window > Timeline
ㅤㅤA window should pop up with all your layers on a timeline
ㅤㅤIf you hit play you can see that the layers are all tied and move like a gif already.
ㅤㅤA Quick Note: make sure that the box on the bottom left of the Timeline window says Forever on it.
ㅤㅤUnder the framed layers, on my specific image, you can see 0.04. Tinker around with that until you find the perfect speed for the gif, and please note that your gif will be faster once put on browser. So this is a bit of a tinker around area, until you find the perfect spot.
ㅤㅤYou can select the first layer while holding the Shift key, and then select the final layer in the timeline while still holding it and every frame should be selected. That way when you change the speed of the animation, it will affect all the frames.
ㅤㅤAt this point you should have a rather large gif, and that could be the end of that. However, the larger the gif, the larger the file size. Tumblr does have limitations for what it allows gif sizes to be, so please be mindful of this:
According to Tumblr Help Center, the recommended GIF size should be no more than 3 MB because GIFs under 3 MB won't be compressed. And the maximum GIF size is 10 MB. If you upload a GIF that exceeds 5 MB, Tumblr will try the best to compress the file download for you.
ㅤㅤ(I can show you how to check the file size as we get closer to finalizing our gif)
ㅤㅤI highly recommend that you crop down the image. You can check out the resolution for images here.
ㅤㅤFor now, I'll crop the gif down to 540px, taking the image from this:
ㅤㅤTo this:
ㅤㅤNow that I've resized the image, I could potentially leave it where it's at and just have it be the bare skinned music video version, but livening it up and trimming the unwanted layers is Very Important.
ㅤㅤThe gif will go from this:
ㅤㅤTo this:
ㅤㅤMaking the pure focus exactly on the layers that I wanted. In order to do that, I simply removed the frames I didn't want from the timeline by selecting the frames and then clicking the trash can.
ㅤㅤNow that that is done, I can go about making the gif nicer to look at. You can use basic psds to do this if you need to fix coloring, and then use a Sharpening Action or individually Sharpening the layers will help the image pop out now that it's cropped down.
ㅤㅤA Very Important Note: make absolutely sure that you have the first frame and layer selected when making any coloring edits to the gif, otherwise it will only apply the changes to one layer and not the whole animation.
ㅤㅤNow, after a bit of editing, sharpening the image and tinkering with the timeframe, the final product I have for a basic gif looks like this:
ㅤㅤWith this as the end goal, we can go to saving the gif as a gif. In order to do that, the first thing we need to do is go to File > Export > Save For Web (Legacy)
ㅤㅤOnce you've done that, this window should appear:
ㅤㅤTelling you all you need to do know about your gif. There's a few things that you should notice and double check at this window, the first of which being this box:
ㅤㅤPlease make sure, before anything, that the Colors: section has 256 in the box
ㅤㅤThat way you make sure you have as much of the color spectrum in your gif available, otherwise it can create some artifacting and dithering that's quite ugly.
ㅤㅤThen there's this section just below the image preview, this section will tell you the file size of your gif, so please keep that very very very mindful. Once again, According to Tumblr Help Center, the recommended GIF size should be no more than 3 MB because GIFs under 3 MB won't be compressed. And the maximum GIF size is 10 MB. If you upload a GIF that exceeds 5 MB, Tumblr will try the best to compress the file download for you.
ㅤㅤIf your gif is too large, I recommend tweaking it a bit more. Either the size, length, or perhaps even the editing you did to it might make the file larger, so please tinker around. Consider also splitting the gif up into multiple gifs.
ㅤㅤOnce your image coloration is right, the speed is to your liking, you've edited it to be just where you want it, and the file size is within the range before compression (note: compression will cause artifacting), you can proceed to Save...
ㅤㅤThere you can save the gif like any other image, naming it, and it should be ready for you to post and use!
ㅤㅤI hope this helps you guys out and is a thorough explanation! At some point, if requested, I will also do a tutorial on how to best edit gifs in a more rp graphic style like this:
ㅤㅤFor now, however, I just wanted to make an introductory gif making tutorial for your use.
ㅤㅤIf you have any questions, please feel free to contact me for anything, and I'll be sure to respond as timely as I possibly can.
ㅤㅤThank you so much!
