critical role fandom misogyny can sometimes feel even more egregious than regular fandom misogyny because the usual suspects can't even fall back on the usual 'well the female characters are all underwritten and unrealistic while the male characters get better writing' excuse. the female characters are almost all "written" and played by women. obviously people are allowed to have favorites, but there’s a pattern in the fandom where the women’s struggles and importance to the story are often downplayed in favor of the men’s. male pcs are allowed to be flawed and emotionally complicated in ways that female pcs often aren’t given the same grace for, without getting relentlessly criticized for it

beau and thaisha are both major drivers in their campaigns but often get treated as supporting characters in the stories of the men around them rather than protagonists in their own right

I know I am reheating 8 years old nachos at this point but woof that conversation in lost & found pissed me off so bad. It seems crazy for nott to be like "what have you guys done to make us trust you??" when it's always jester, beau and fjord blocking caleb with their bodies in every combat. To take the whole point of that confrontation as "well we had already left clues so why does one scroll case matter??" when the point was "stop doing shifty things and trust us. be a team player"

I am totally on beau, fjord and molly's side because this isn't the first time caleb and nott have acted this way + they are arguably the most buttoned up about their past. So beau's abrasive behaviour is justified, PLUS she is the only one who is truly thinking about how they have stumbled on to some conspiracy grander than themselves and is in the moment not trusting anyone. It's not the most pleasant way to have a serious team building conversation but she's got ✨backstory✨ too.

Fjord is plain nice and Molly is actually spiting some truth. But that is easily ignored because iM jUSt A goBLin gIRL

Kudos to the players because this is exactly what two individuals who have clearly gotten each other through some shit would act like in a sort of team. If I was actually playing this game I think I would've had an irl falling out tbh

Also if Sam was actually a woman playing nott, oh the SHIT that would've rained down from the fandom. If Marisha tried to take the cobalt bracers from the other house, as always, she would've been torn apart by the viewers. However, that's really not here nor there because I'm mad at misogyny not the game or players.

Here we are again in part 2 of Liam and Sam make a contentious character choice and get 0 flack for it but Marisha makes a character choice that rightfully calls them out and gets obliterated by the army of sexists and "my little meow meow" Caleb stans.

I am sure that Bowlgate will amount to nothing really the minute I start the next episode but god what an uncomfortable way to end a very good episode. Maya Hulmes is a paramount dnd player and honestly I think would've died fighting them if it wasn't getting to the end of the livestream (I was really hoping to see some more of her draconic rage)

And if it isn't clear, I am forever going to be a Marisha/Beau defender and say that she did nothing wrong. Someone in the party needs to have a backbone and reel in the resident know it all (especially with the abysmal plays Liam was making that game. Scorching ray on an acid spewing troll? No sleep spell for the clustered fucking fishmen?? ENLARGING BEAU AT 7 HIT POINTS??). And to me the biggest problem with fans being like "oh poor Caleb got yelled at for just being cautious" are missing the valuable lesson of just because YOU have trust issues doesn't mean that you get to decide other people's destinies. Cali was so incredibly nice to all of them from the start, in game there is nothing that could've triggered the amount of suspicion Caleb had for Cali's intentions. I mean for fucks sake, there should've been some sympathy for a person trying to destroy the instruments of the people who made her torture and kill other people. These mfers can trust the gentlemen (know crime lord) for coin so they aren't saints for sure but god forbid someone else want to do a bit of magic too damn. Liam plays a good wizard douche for sure.
