WOMEN IN STEM
Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) was an English chemist whose research and study in molecular structure contributed to the understanding of the structure of DNA. Rosalind Franklin attended Newnham College at Cambridge and graduated in 1938 with a degree in chemistry. In 1947, Rosalind Franklin moved to Paris and worked with Jacques Mering on X-ray chromatography. She later moved to London in 1951 in an attempt to advance her career. She worked at King’s College with a graduated student, Raymond Gosling, and senior scientist Maurice Wilkins. Upon her discovery of two different forms of DNA in X-ray images, Franklin filed the image with the defined helical structure as Photo 51. In 1953, Franklin moved to Birkbeck College and Wilkins became in possession of Franklin’s notes and found Photo 51 that proved DNA was doubled stranded and attached in the middle with phosphate base. Wilkins and 2 other colleagues won the Nobel Prize for the structure of DNA, but sadly Franklin’s work was barely mentioned. Some other of her scientific works include discoveries about the tobacco mosaic virus and polio.
