Children can be seen on the streets across all cities in India. They are part of the crowd. Often we do not even notice them. They seem to be invisible. It is “normal” to see unaccompanied minors in public places. They may be alone or with their families; they may sleep on sidewalks, shelters or in dwellings.

ActionAid India Child Friendly Space centres support out-of-school children, differently abled children from the economically weaker background and children with psychosocial issues. Since 2017, ActionAid India has been running Child Friendly Spaces in Jammu & Kashmir in villages across Srinagar, Budgam, Pulwama, Anantnag, and Shopian districts. This UNICEF-supported project aims at ensuring community-based protection of children and promoting their participation in their family and community settings. Children in these communities have lost their childhood and safe spaces of socialization owing to the current situation in the state. The CFSs are run for 3 days a week in the community-based spaces and one day in the local school. The CFS provides a safe community-based environment to children where they participate in a variety of activities including sports, crafts, drawing, and painting. The Child Friendly Space provides an opportunity for peer socialization and peer sharing, and these safe spaces are also used as a platform to address the deeper issues of child protection including psychosocial issues, school dropouts, and adolescent health. The importance of the girl child in India – the motivations behind Beti Zindabad!
The struggle of a girl child begins even before the day she is conceived. In India, female foeticide is a worrying practice, as cheap abortion technology allows households to exercise their preference for sons over daughters. She is ‘lucky’ if she is allowed to be born. Even after birth, the girl child faces discrimination and oppression. She is not provided with proper nutrition compared to her male siblings, her education is not given much importance and in many cases, parents prefer that their sons continue schooling, and want their daughters to stay at home and do household work. After marriage, the trials faced by women do not end as she continues to face oppression and even violence in her marital home. We, at ActionAid Association, launched Beti Zindabad –a nation-wide campaign to tackle the adverse sex ratio. The campaign has grown since its inception and come to address a wide variety of issues of violence against women, the need to recognize and celebrate women’s place in the world of work, and efforts to ensure women’s access to the property, including housing and agricultural land.

Save children’s education in Kashmir
The state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has been witness to different phases of civil unrest over the last two and half decades. Children are worst hit as frequent unrests and curfews disrupt normal daily activities and force closure of schools. There are fewer opportunities for children to play, learn and socialize with friends which in turn affects their mental and social well-being. Children in conflict-affected areas such as Kashmir are at risk of physical harm, trauma and other mental health issues. They are also at risk of dropping out of schools and developing psycho-social problems. You can support children’s education in Kashmir by donating towards our Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS).

In Eliminating Child Marriage, a report published by ActionAid Association, analysis of Census 2011 data showed that 103 million persons in India were married before reaching 18 years of age. Out of this, 85 million or 83% of the total number of child marriages was of girls. So it is not surprising that a UNICEF report found that at least one in every three child brides is in India.Even though the ActionAid report showed that the percentage of women in India in the 20 to 24-year age group married before the age of 18 declined by around 20.6% over the two decades between 1992 to 2012 the number of child marriages, especially of young girls, remains very high.
Enable children in conflict areas in the Kashmir valley to enjoy their childhood and realize their potential. Provide safe & healthy childhood they deserve.
Say NO to Child Marriage & YES to School
ActionAid Association, working with UNICEF, launched the “No to Child Marriage | Yes to School” campaign. Launched in the end of October 2019, we have reached out to more than 1.4 lakh students in a little less than 2,000 schools across 13 districts in the Bihar and Odisha. This campaign is being extended to districts in Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The objective of the campaign is to build youth and adolescents as agent for change to bring about a transformation in social mindset that sees marriage as the only avenue for personal and social fulfilment for children, especially girls and young women.
