hmmm i wanna talk about arcane actually. specifically silco
so first off, i wanna clarify, i'm a few episodes in and i do enjoy arcane so far. it's fun. it's amazingly(!!!!!) animated and the story is compelling.
but.
in the very first episode, the main Big Bad villain is introduced. Silco, a clearly designed-to-be-unappealing, haggard, decaying, evil overlord type character. and he has a large, prominent, hooked nose.
i hope i don't need to tell you how fucking frustrating and disheartening that is to see. him being an actual character from the game is no reason to stay true to an offensive design.
aside from the blatant antisemitism, which is an issue enough on its own, big, prominent noses are a feature many many many nonwhite people have. i have a large nose. and because of characters like Silco, i fucking hated it. up until i was 17, i was seriously considering plastic surgery to "correct" it, because i thought it was ugly and hideous and ruined my face. i still do struggle with hating my nose. to this day, every photo of myself i take is so carefully angled to make it look as small as possible.
growing up, all i saw was heros with cute little button noses, upturned noses, delicate and complimentary to their face. and all i saw were villains with big noses, prominent noses, hooked noses. i know to someone who hasnt experienced this, it might not sound like a big deal. but it is. it really fucking is. it makes you see yourself in the most morally repugnant, and often deliberately ugly, characters. do you know how badly that fucks you up?
so yeah, i very casually like arcane. i can't fucking express how disappointed and bitter i am about Silco's design. much less the fact that i haven't seen a single other person fucking talk about how upsetting it is. not one.
TL;DR: arcane is a well-made show. but Silco, and the vicious contribution he makes to the idea that big noses are evil, ugly features to have, is nothing short of extremely racist and antisemitist propaganda.

hi sorry i've been dead lately i started working on sunday and that was an absolute nightmare. i broke something on my shift by accident. and i now have to work during the week as well which is gonna be the death of me
