being korean-american today.
hello, this is not a normal post, nor do i expect many people to see this, but i had to get it out there. hope youll read through and understand. feel free to criticize, counter, argue, or tell me a personal experience! id love to hear them. hmu with an ask!
for some context:
i am a first generation korean immigrant currently living in the states. i came here when i was only 2 so i am more accustomed to american culture, but i am proud of my heritage and live a korean home life.
my issue:
one of the biggest reasons koreans have international fame is k-pop. and im not trying to say k-pop is bad music or that k-pop hasn't done anything positive for koreans, but i can see the influence it has on how people view korean culture.
i have heard the phrases
"i wish i was korean"
and
"all koreans are attractive"
way too many times.
-dont get me wrong, i am glad people are becoming more exposed to koreans, but we are NOT a perfect and glorious society.
we arent just the kpop groups you see on tv, we cant all sing and dance perfectly, we arent all hot, we are NOT perfect.
stop fetishizing my culture to be these glorified humans who are good at everything.
learn and expose urself to more, the good or the bad, dont just look at us as an idol producing factory.
and not everyone is a part of this issue, but its an issue that should be known.
if u have questions feel free to ask or hit up google.
[possible part two maybe related to this]
thanks for reading if u made it through.
