this is so fucking funny
This is probably a stupid question, but is it okay for non-Jewish people to try decidedly traditional Jewish foods/food groupings without any ritual behaviour attached, just as food? Would it depend on the food?
Curious how matzah tastes, huh?
Well, the answer is probably not, with a healthy side of maybe.
Some food is more important than other food, so it does depend on the food. If weâre talking about food thatâs eaten on holidays, like, yeah, you shouldnât be making a Hillel sandwich for yourself. You shouldnât be braiding challah. You shouldnât be frying latkes. Fullstop, really.
And for most specifically Jewish foods that arenât bound to holidays, you probably should stay away from that, too, for the most part.
The exceptions would be if you take part in any of these holidays. If you want to go to a seder at your local synagogue, for example, it would be not only acceptable, but expected. Just donât go specifically for the food. Thatâs the wrong reason.
And then if youâd like to go to your local Jewish deli for matzah ball soup you can do that every day. Thereâs nothing attached to that, except for Judaism in general. But still, not something you should just be making by yourself.
The problem comes from removing Jews from Jewish food. If you start eating these things by yourself, whenever you want just because, then that is appropriation. If you are asking permission and/or participating, then thatâs good.
And if you donât know what foods have special meaning, just ask! Thereâs always Jews that would love to answer.
Also: Not a bad question at all. Thank you for asking!
đ hi another American Jew checking in here. the issue is that jews are not a monolith group, and many of us have different takes. such as mineâthese foods are not culture locked
yes, a Hillel sandwich is made of charoset (a sweet usually fruit & nuts dish) and maror (bitter herbs or horseradish) between two pieces of matzah. You eat it generally as a part of the Passover Seder to represent the sweet & bitter parts about escaping slavery etc, and I donât really see why youâd WANT to outside of that context, but itâs not locked. my brother just likes the taste and would do it with leftovers.
and even the rest of the âfoodâ during seder⊠you can eat a handful of parsley dipped in saltwater if you want. I just donât know why youâd want to do that without the significance and tradition. but while the ritual/holiday itself doesnât make sense to practice if no one present is jewish, theyâre all common foods you can eat any other time of year. there are food restrictions in Judaism (ie Kosher rules and no leavened bread during Pesach), but itâs not there are Jewish foods you can ONLY eat during holidays. we can eat matzvah year round. most people just donât lol. oh & gefilte fish is traditionally Jewish but fair warning it also sucks
donât want to be outright combative but challah is a very common and non religious type of bread. it makes great French toast. and latkes and jelly donuts are eaten during hannukah, sure, but you CAN eat them other times of year. Itâs basically fried potatoesâitâs unethical to encourage people not to do that lol. Also, Hannukah isnât even that important or religious to begin with?
Iâm truly scratching my head trying to think of any Jewish foods that per religious rules would be inappropriate to eat or make, especially since the foods you listed are more based in Ashkenazi traditions and donât represent all Jewish communities đ€·ââïž
Jewish food is tasty and if you want to eat some go for it. You can get all of these items at a Jewish deli. just if you make your own version and tweak it until itâs unrecognizable, donât pretend is the same dish. You can eat and cook âtraditionally jewishâ foods, but like any other cuisine youâre not familiar with, itâll probably just taste bad haha
This post is, like, 8 years old and I don't even use tumblr anymore so I don't even know how you found it but I want you to know that I'm (again, like 8 years) older and have a better understanding of the world around me and I completely agree with what you said now and I was wrong lol
My rabbi straight up said if you have a health issue or eating disorder itâs a MITZVAH to eat on Yom Kippur and Iâm just. So pleased. I love my rabbi so much đ

Lyft just offered me free credits to break the strike this week.
Thereâs a lyft / uber strike planned this week from 7am to 9pm on Wednesday May 8th. I got a notification this morning that every ride taken this week gives me credit on future rides. I found that tempting but then remembered why they are doing it - to encourage folks to cross a picket line. I for one wonât be taking advantage of this offer, as I stand in solidarity with people utilizing their right to free speech to bargain for better working conditions.
Consider this a friendly reminder to those who follow me that this is happening, and I hope youâll support the appsâ drivers in their quests for better pay.
If anyone wants to do their bit to help this strike that has their own car: Find out if anyone in your circles has to rely to n Uber/Lyft to get around. Offer to help get them where they need to go during the strike week. Most people using Uber/Lyft arenât using it because they WANT to. Help give them alternatives so that they have the choice. Fuckn organize even on just a small level.

"We are all too familiar with the devastating effect a mass shooting hasâ
A Pittsburgh Jewish group is raising money for the victims of mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand as a show of gratitude for the previous generosity shown by Muslim groups.
Last October, after a gunman killed 11 people at Pittsburghâs Tree of Life synagogue, Muslim groups were quick to raise money for the Jewish community there.
In the wake of Fridayâs terror attack on two Christchurch mosques that took the lives of 49 people and injured at least 40, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is working to reciprocate the support that Pittsburghâs Jewish community received from Muslim groups in its own time of need.
Last October, a crowdfunding campaign called âMuslims Unite for Pittsburgh Synagogueâ raised more than $200,000 in four days for the Pittsburgh shooting victims. In a Friday statement, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh said it is now accepting donations to help repay that kindness.
âUnfortunately, we are all too familiar with the devastating effect a mass shooting has on a faith community,â said Meryl Ainsman, chair of the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. âWe are filled with grief over this senseless act of hate. May those who were injured heal quickly and fully, and may the memories of the victims forever be a blessing.â
According to the statement, donors can give online at the Jewish Federationâs website, or send checks to 2000 Technology Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
pewpidieâs motivations and feelings are completely irrelevant i donât care if he really is a full blown nazi or just an insensitive detached prick the effect is the same. he IS effectively doing mass recruiting for the neonazis whether he sets out to do that or not
Muslim friends, the Jewish Community loves you. We are here for you with hugs, strength, and love.
A while ago I made a post to assist the Jewish community as a whole following a hateful act of violence against their synagogue by creating a thread of local Jewish organizations to donate to from all over the world. Itâs time for us to take action again.
The Muslim community has been enduring great suffering and frequent tragedy for ages. In light of the attack in NZ, if your mosque or local Muslim resource group has a donation page please reblog and add a link so that I can boost it!!
If you canât donate, please reblog this or share the donation pages added to this post to twitter, facebook, or anywhere that will help them be seen by someone who can.Â
EDIT: The link included in the older version of this post turned out to be a fraudulent one. DO NOT DONATE TO IT. Here are the official donation pages.

Party Pooping Paladin Says No Murder - Commission
The Paladin always ruins the partyâs fun, eh? On the plus side, Paladins like Allura here are also the best Mom Friend youâd ever know. She may not smile much and gentle is hardly in her repertoire, but she is loyal and steadfast not just to her principals but to her pal pals too. Even⊠if they arenât as lawful as sheâd always like.
Thank you @helloallec for another wonderful character commission!!
Thank you @pomsdoodlefort for doing this commission for my fianceâs birthday!!!
