At the corner of the room, a group of friends shares laughter that swells and breaks like waves on a quiet shore. For now, they are untouchable, their joy immune to the ticking clock or the world outside these walls.

And here I sit, waiting for my man. Love, I think, is not just the joy or the quarrels. It’s this too—the patient pause, the quiet anticipation. To love is, perhaps, to wait.
