Product Hunt’s description “Like a physical version of Siri” is spot on. Amazon’s Echo is a bluetooth speaker with Siri-like capabilities. Although it is an Amazon centered device, it works with the things I want most: it plays my audible books, my local NPR station, plays Spotify through my phone, turns on and off my Hue lights, and gives me weather and news updates. On backorder until January 25th, you have time to think of names for your Echo.
This is cardboard - and I am in love. Cardboard is a low-cost, virtual reality headset that uses your smartphone to take you into immersive 360 degree worlds. It arrives in a flat, mailable sleeve, and folds into action in just a few seconds - move too fast as I did and you might damage it. The design is ingenious and inexpensive. The magnet ring on the side, when moved, causes a sudden fluctuation in the magnetic field around the phone, triggering action within the Google Cardboard app. Cardboard is simple, clever, and really fun to use. There are bunch of 360 videos available, a few of my favorite apps are: NYT VR, VRSE, and Jaunt.
