apparently there's discourse about the fact that the current cartoonist for nancy is making her aunt fritzi a bisexual with a butch girlfriend. i personally dont think the strips are anything to write home about (in either direction) but i also think it's generally a waste of time to worry about what's happening in the newspaper comic strip nancy.

i hate to say it as someone who loves the funnies but apart from maybe one or two titles at most, newspaper comics are functionally abandonware. i would wager less than 10,000 people across the united states make a point of reading the newspaper funnies every single day like they used to. personally i'm on board with the idea of tossing these IPs around to different artists and seeing what they cook up, i think it could very well be one of the only things to keep the medium going. like say what you will about the modernizing of nancy but it's also one of the only ongoing comic strips people still talk about let alone read these days. so sure let's go all in. i want to see wendy xu's take on marmaduke. give garfield to katie tiedrich. let's see mary worth by that canadian lady who makes menage a 3

the Entire Point of the batman mythos to me is making something meaningful out of a random and pretty senseless act of violence, and then helping a bunch of other people do that too. every time a writer makes joe chill a time traveler or dick grayson have a magical tooth or gives jason todd the blood of the ancients and everything is just a massive conspiracy or whatever the fuck they're just completely missing the point, which is that painful things happen, for reasons we may never understand, and we have to contend with them.

that's the staying power of the fantasy! it's not actually being a billionaire who can beat up a million ninjas with his bare hands and has a really cool car. if you think that's the fantasy you got caught up in the trappings. it's that you could take the worst moment of your life and make meaning out of the howling empty void of grief by using it to help people!

I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things

and maybe this is my pov from being a therapist now, or from going through the things i have gone through since the last time i made a text post on this website, but i just think we are all stewards of other peoples' experiences on this earth and we have the choice to be responsible stewards or to kind of just do whatever for our personal gain (or to prove a point, or to be vicious and mean, or, or, or...)

and when given the choice, when the other person isn't some kind of rapacious monster or hurting you or other people, why wouldn't you want to be responsible. why wouldn't you want to be kind.
