Skin Deep by Asidian Morris (@asidian) is out now!
Taurean just started his new job as a guard for Lord Cyril, one of the most influential nobles in Sanryn. It's supposed to be a cushy, easy job. But when the manor is attacked, Taurean finds himself embroiled in a tangled web of truths and lies. What kind of person is his employer? And more importantly, why does the Mangler of the East City want Lord Cyril dead?
With the dangers of the fey-wood closing in, Taurean doesn't have long to find the answers that could save all of their lives.
My novelette Skin Deep is now officially available!
If you enjoy my writing, please consider picking it up. The support would mean the world to me!
Thank you so much to @thewhumpyprintingpress, who allowed this to happen, and the very talented @kaciart, who did the cover art.
Warnings: child neglect, unhealthy coping mechanisms, Tim lowkey stalking the Waynes as a stand-in for actual affection, canon-typical violence
Excerpt:
Tim returns to Wayne Manor with his arm in a cast, a bottle of prescription pills made out in his name, and Jason at his side.
Bruce is a few paces ahead of them, on his phone. He's been on his phone the whole ride back from the hospital, and even though he's speaking in hushed tones, Tim suspects he knows what the call is about. Bruce's face is stoic and grim, every bit the Dark Knight just at the moment.
As they pass into the entry hall, he says, "I'll have to call you back. Yes, before this afternoon." A pause; he holds the door for Tim and Jason, who step in under the arching bridge of his arm. "Vital, yes. I'll talk to you then."
He swipes the phone off and follows the boys in, shutting the door behind them. As soon as it's closed, there seems to be a shift in his shoulders, some sort of slump, like a cliff getting ready for a mudslide. Tim knows a lot about the conditions required for mudslides. He fell into a Wikipedia trap reading about them a few months back.
He half-turns toward Jason, automatic, about to ask if he knows anything about mudslides (and, tangentially, the mudslide prevention engineering adjustments they made recently on the hillside surrounding Gotham's water treatment facility), but the look Jason's giving him right now makes it clear that it's very much not the time for mudslides. Jason's intent and focused and kind of squared up like he's looking for a fight.
Come to think of it, his knuckles are bruised. Tim wonders whether he went out as Robin last night, while Tim passed the heck out in his hospital bed for a whole glorious twelve hours.
"Okay, first things first," says Jason, brash and blunt, chin tipped up in the way Tim knows he only does when he gets stubborn about something. "This is your place now, too. You got that?"
Tim isn't entirely sure he's got that. It feels a little presumptuous, like they're getting ahead of themselves on a lot of things, but Jason's staring at him like this is important, so he nods anyway.

Tim knew it was stupid to hide anything from the Bats, especially when they were always bound to jump to the worst possible conclusions, except something like this was better off remaining buried deep where Jason couldn't find it.

"I know," blurts the kid, and then, impossibly, finds a deeper shade of red to blush. "I mean. We live next door. I've seen you around. I'm Tim."
He seems to recover a little — takes Jason's hand and shakes it, like a perfect little gentleman, and as he does, Jason says, "You're the Drake kid, right?"
Tim wrinkles his nose slightly, at that. "I'm not a kid," says the kid. "I'm only like two years younger than you."

“Try to handcuff me and I’ll break your fucking nose,” Timothy assures stubbornly.
Jason claps his hands and grins in the infuriatingly attractive lopsided way he always does, “Alright then. Get comfortable, Superboy-Toy.”
Kon begins stripping almost instantly, taking his time as he yawns dramatically, “Man, it’s been a day.”
“Is wearing a leather jacket that exhausting?” Jason jokes as he watches Kon undress a little too closely.
Kon shrugs, “Being hot is a lot of work, dude. But I’m sure you know that.”
Tim sneers at both of them, “If you’re seriously not leaving, then shut up.”
Timothy squawks as Jason snatches his computer from his lap and shuts it. His following protests are ignored as the two men shuffle him up into the center of the bed until they’ve each got an arm wrapped around him. The three of them are tangled together, and Tim can already feel his heartbeat slowing despite himself.
AKA: Stephanie gives up on helping Tim and enlists the help of two men that, apparently, have some raunchy feelings for him.

Stay tuned for our next two releases as we keep this party going all weekend long!
Excited to announce that I participated in this exchange! Somewhere in the fics unveiling either today or over the course of the next few days, there will be a fic and a treat by me. (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)
If you want to try and find them during the anon period, good hunting! Otherwise, author reveals will be on July 24th.
The exchange is still open to treats, so if you wanted to write or draw a treat for any of the exchange participants (including me), there's still time to hop in, take a look at the prompts, and make some fun new Timmy-centric fanworks /o/
Warnings: kidnapping, implied drugging that happens off-screen to facilitate the kidnapping, torture, canon-typical violence
Excerpt:
As soon as he catches a glimpse, he sucks a sharp breath in through his nose — because there beside him, lying bound on the elegant dining table in metal straps to match Dick's own, is Tim.
He's not awake yet, but he seems to be stirring; even as Dick watches, the white lenses in Red Robin's domino blink open, matching the motion of the eyes behind it.
He can read the subtle shift in Tim's expression, even if no one else probably can: the faint tightening in the jaw, the way the flex of muscle presses his lips together. He knows Tim well enough to know what alarm looks like, when he's trying to hide it.
Dick can't tell where Tim is looking with the domino's lenses obscuring his eyes, but he can guess — makes out the faintest tilt of a chin as Tim cants in toward him. It lasts only a second or two, and then there's a shift of weight and his little brother turns toward the rest of the room, putting them back to back.
Tim's all business as he surveys the situation. When his voice comes, it's low, quiet enough to be lost under the hum of polite conversation. "How long was I out?"
Dick pitches his voice just as soft. "Not sure. I just woke up, too."
Tim must not like their odds any more than Dick does; as he takes in the glittering gala and its owl-masked attendees, the tension in his shoulders ratchets up, and his fingers twitch toward the spot where his bo staff ought to be secured but isn't.

Thank you so much, this really brightened my day. :>>>
Warnings: child neglect, unhealthy coping mechanisms, Tim lowkey stalking the Waynes as a stand-in for actual affection, canon-typical violence
Excerpt:
Tim wants to stay in bed.
He's not sure what time it is, but sleep clings to him, sticky as syrup, and refuses to let him go as he struggles up toward waking.
The pillow is very soft and very warm, but a pair of unforgiving hands are pulling him away from it. It ought to be a crime. He ought to call Batman.
"Mmh," mumbles Tim, petulant, and reaches out toward the pillow, fingers outstretched.
He makes a soft, unhappy noise when his right wrist protests, jagged pain that lances upward — curls his arm in against his chest instead, and keeps reaching with the left.
"I'm sorry, chum," says a deep voice. It sort of rumbles through his side, like he can feel it speaking, which is weird for some reason, but Tim can't seem to think of why. His thoughts are muffled and far away, like they're trying to talk to him from the other room with the door closed. "We'll get you back as soon as we can. I promise."
"But the pillow," says Tim, mournfully. The words are barely out of his mouth before he regrets them. It's a stupid thing to say, no matter how soft the pillow is, and no matter how half-lost in sleep he'd been.
But the voice only says, "Jay-lad?" and suddenly the pillow is there, lying half on top of Tim, against his chest. He closes his left arm in around it and tugs it closer, hugging it to him the way he does some nights with the pillow in his own bed, when the house is very large and very empty, and Tim needs to pretend that there's someone to hold onto.
Warnings: child neglect, unhealthy coping mechanisms, Tim lowkey stalking the Waynes as a stand-in for actual affection, canon-typical violence
Excerpt:
"Shower's this way," Jason says, and steers Tim down the hall toward the bathroom. He pulls the door open and Tim steps inside, vaguely aware that here, too, are signs of life. There are towels draped over every towel rack in varying stages of folded, three different types of shampoo, and someone has left a small rubber duck on the rim at the edge of the walk-in shower.
Jason presses clean towels into Tim's arms, and then he says, "Hold up," and disappears for a couple of seconds. When he comes back, he adds clean clothes to the top of the pile.
"You can wear my stuff," says Jason. "So you don't have to change back into your old ones. Shampoo and conditioner are in there, most other bathroom stuff's under the sink. You need anything, just yell, okay?"
"Okay," says Tim. "Sure."
He wants to say more, wants to say thank you, but the words feel clumsy on his tongue.
It all seems like a lot, suddenly. It's almost like he's a guest or something, staying over for dinner and a sleepover. Tim's never been asked to a sleepover before, but he imagines that it would go something like this, casual and easy and kind.
Warnings: child neglect, Tim is bad at self-worth and also communication, canon-typical unpleasant case details
Excerpt:
In the aftermath, they return to the cave. Tim showers, and he changes into something warm, but he just can't seem to stop shivering. There still isn't a place for him, so he sits on the floor with his laptop as Batman takes the computer chair.
Their fingers clack across the keyboards, each of them independently, Bruce moving on to another case as Tim files a report on the dead people at the docks.
Two in the morning comes and goes, and then three. Alfred arrives, eventually, to bring them each a cup of Earl Grey, steaming and pale with milk.
Tim's long done with the report, but he keeps putting off leaving. He isn't sure what he's waiting for. His fingers haven't moved in a long time, and his mind stutters and glitches oddly, tripping over capitalism and greed and chocolate cupcakes and cheeks eaten away by fish in the harbor.
Finally, near sunrise, Bruce turns toward him, and everything goes still and silent, like something buried in the tender place beneath Tim's rib cage is holding its breath.
Warnings: child neglect, unhealthy coping mechanisms, Tim lowkey stalking the Waynes as a stand-in for actual affection, canon-typical violence
Excerpt:
"What the hell," says Jason, and his voice shakes. Tim doesn't think he's ever heard Jason's voice shake, and that's counting that one night at the water treatment plant, when there had been at least fifteen dead people in the water tanks. Tim had had nightmares about that for a week after he'd come to photograph the fight and accidentally caught the clean-up, but Robin's voice had never so much as wavered.
Now, though — now Jason sounds sort of breathless, like somebody's punched him in the stomach.
"Sorry," says Tim. "Sorry. You weren't supposed to — I didn't know we had, um. Guests."
The longer he stares, the more he's sure he's not seeing things. The light is very bright — painfully bright, after the all-encompassing darkness of the basement.
The hallucinations have never managed to mimic that, before.
"Guests," Jason answers. His voice sounds funny, still — creeping higher, strained and disbelieving. "That's what you're worried about?"
Tim fiddles with the hem of his shirt with his good hand. "I'm worried about several things, actually."
Hello! I've been having a blast reading your batfam fics recently and I'd love to record a podfic for Completely Reasonable Precautions. I combed through your blog and it looks like you've given permission in the past, but I wanted to double check that you're still comfortable with podfics of your work. Cheers and thanks for all the lovely stories!
Hi! Thanks so much for reaching out :>
I'm so glad you liked the fic enough to want to podfic it, and I'd be delighted if you decided to record it. Please drop me a link if you go ahead with it. I'd love to listen <333
Warnings: sickfic, emotional hurt/comfort, Tim is extremely bad at self-care, truth serum effects
Excerpt:
"Jason left to go get your medicine," says Bruce, levelly. When Tim cracks an eye open again, he discovers that he's being examined like the newest clue in a particularly intricate case. "Care to tell me what that's all about?"
"No," says Tim, and shoves himself up to sitting. He wobbles there for a moment, barely upright — but his brain, at least, feels marginally less packed in cotton than it did before, so honestly he'll take it.
"Let me rephrase that," says Bruce. The awkwardness is gone. In its place, he fixes Tim with a look that's level and insightful, judgmental in the way Bruce always used to get when Tim made a bad call on patrol during his time as Robin. "Why exactly do you have a long-term prescription that isn't updated in your medical file?"
Tim has a second to feel curiously betrayed — stung somewhere deep by the way Bruce barrels straight in and asks. There's a moment after that when he wonders, hopeful, whether maybe the pollen has run its course and he's going to be able to give some wry, snarky nothing-answer.
"Because I haven't updated my medical file," says Tim, which is fantastic, is perfect even, is all according to plan. So of course that's when his traitor mouth decides to keep going. "After losing an organ. Which means I'll need to be on antibiotics for a few years."
"Hm," says Bruce.
Tim buries his face in his hands so that he doesn't have to look up at Bruce's expression.
"Look," says Tim. "Can we not do the grilling while I'm on truth serum?"
Warnings: child neglect, unhealthy coping mechanisms, Tim lowkey stalking the Waynes as a stand-in for actual affection, canon-typical violence
Excerpt:
The thing about being stuck in the basement without a light is, there's not very much to do.
But Tim's always been good at keeping himself entertained.
He plans out new tweaks for his algorithm and decides how he'll implement them. He considers the best way to track the kids from last night, to make sure they go back to their families instead of getting swallowed up by Gotham's notoriously bad foster system. He makes a to-buy list for audio recording equipment so that the next time he needs to manage surveillance, he can have eyes and ears on the bad guys.
That's about when he realizes that he still has his camera with him, on the strap around his neck — perks up considerably, as he turns it on.
The screen is an ocean of light in the darkness, and he flips back through the shots from yesterday, and then the shots from earlier this week.
What he lands on is one of his favorites — Batman crouched atop a gargoyle on the corner of Otisburg International Bank. The lights of Gotham's skyline gleam in the background. The tiniest smile is on Batman's lips, and Robin stands just in front of him, closer to the ledge, pointing with great enthusiasm at something off in the distance.
It's a great shot.
It's the kind of shot where you can almost tell how much they mean to each other out of uniform. Jason looks so excited, and Bruce — Bruce looks almost fond. Like he cares about what Jason's saying. Like he isn't just humoring him.
A quiet, cold thing stutters in Tim's chest as he looks at the picture, even as he aches with something that he can feel low in his lungs.
He stares for so long that the image feels burned into his retinas. He stares for so long that he can almost see it, when he closes his eyes.
Then, finally, he reaches up to turn his camera off again.
Warnings: sickfic, emotional hurt/comfort, Tim is extremely bad at self-care, truth serum effects
Excerpt:
"Hey," says a voice, somewhere in the dark. "You alive?"
It takes Tim a minute to place it.
It takes longer for him to swim up from the depths of half-remembered dreams: the desert at night, cold and empty, blood soaking into the sand. Plummeting from a cut line to the city streets below, broken and bleeding, to find that someone's stolen his cloak and mask. Talking until his throat bleeds, secrets spilling from his lips until he's choking on his own blood, still unable to stop.
"Mmh," says Tim, indistinctly.
"Cause I'm on proof-of-life duty," says the voice. "Dickface is still banned."
Tim waves a hand, vaguely. He hopes that it conveys, "Go away and leave me alone, I'm still sleeping."
Either his genius bout of charades doesn't quite come through, or the voice doesn't care, because a finger reaches out to prod at him.
"You've gotta sit up," says the voice. "You're supposed to be taking your meds."
"Mm," says Tim, and buries his face in the pillow.
There's a long few beats of silence, and then an aggrieved sigh. Then a pair of hands are taking hold of him by the shoulders to roll him onto his back — levering him up out of the warmth of the blankets, which ought to be a war crime.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Oops, I found the batfam and I'm having emotions!
And Dick isn’t lying, is the thing. There isn’t any lasting damage. He’ll be sore for a few days and then move on, just like every other time he’s copped a hit on patrol.
Only this time a few assholes had to go and brag about it to Red fucking Hood.
“You sure?” Jason asks now, which for him is practically fawning. “You’re being kind of…weird.”
-
In which Dick has a bad few days at the end of a bad few weeks, deals with a spot of mild torture, and comes face to face with the enormity of his own guilt over what happened to Jason. He's fine though.
