“Atar, why do you never change?”
“I change, ibine,” he answers her gently. “Though not in the ways that are easy to see.”
“Adad changes. His beard is growing more white.” Her brow furrowed. “But your hair stays the same.”
Celebrimbor looked at her. The forge’s lights were caught in his gaze, bright yet sorrowful. “Aye,” he softly said.
“I do not want him to go,” she whispered. “And I do not want you to stay alone.”
“Nor do I wish for that,” he murmured. “Yet the world is shaped by such partings. Even stone learns of this in the end.”
She pulled back, searching his face. “Will I go too?”
“You will choose,” he said at last. “That is the gift, and a burden, given to those who stand between.”
Celebrimbor looked at her with such empathy. “I could not understand it once, for we do not grow as you will grow. Living through many ages, and our hearts and faces stay with us. We watch the world turn around us, seeing others bloom, and change. It is not that we do not feel, only that we feel differently, and in this watching, we learn how precious every moment is”
She leaned her head against his chest, listening to a heart that would not quicken with age, nor tire of its own beating rhythm. “If I choose to stay, will it hurt?”
“Yes. And if you choose to go, it will hurt also. Love does not spare us, whatever road we take.”
“Will you be angry with me?”
Celebrimbor kissed her brow, lingering there. “Never,” he vowed. “For whatever you become, Ithra, you will be true. And to see truth take shape. though it passes beyond my keeping, is all a maker may hope for.”
