Hiiiiiii!! I hope you're doing well <333
Sorry if this is something that you already discussed before, but I'm slowly starting to be more active in my fic writing (I posted my first fic on ao3 some time ago), and there's a little problem that keeps tormenting me: how can I accurately tag my fics and, at the same time, avoid making spoilers? 😫
There is a fic that I'm getting really hyped about, and I plan that, at a certain point, there will be a miscarriage: I had thought, since it will be a multi-chapter fic, that maybe I could just add tags as the story goes on, but it will still be a spoiler to see that tag once I will post the chapter related to the miscarriage! I will obviously use the tag, I know it may be a triggering or uncomfortable scene for some people, but at the same time I imagined that part as a plot twist: if the readers get to that moment with an anticipation of what will happen, there will be no surprise anymore, right?
Hope you have an amazing day/night 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
hi! I'm doing great and hope you are too <3
as for your fic, if I were you, I’d probably use the “creator chose not to use archive warnings” tag, but not necessarily the “miscarriage” tag, since I wanted to keep that part a plot twist and a surprise for my audience.
yes, I always encourage fellow writers to tag their warnings properly and I always try to tag my warnings properly in my works, but sometimes there are still things us writers wish to keep secrets as plot twists — in my opinion, that's when the "creator chose not to use archive warnings" can be brought into play.
yes, the topic of miscarriage can be triggering and uncomfortable to some, but the point of “creator chose not to use archive warnings” is already to warn audiences that there may be some topics in the works that are triggering, therefore audiences should proceed at their own risk. the “creator chose not to use archive warnings” is already a warning in and of itself, and one of its main purposes is so that authors can warn their readers without giving away any spoilers or plot twists.
of course, in the end, it’s entirely up to you and what you think is best for your fic and your readers. and I don’t think there’s any wrong answer when it comes to this.
