Hello old friend, are you in love with love again? Whispered to my reflection, have you forgot just how it ends? It sure was nice to fall asleep thinking of you, but now daybreak screams so loud. I understand you have to leave, but there's one thing or two I've been thinking through and need to slide off my mind, so if you find a little time, I wrote a note that goes something like: I won't hold your smile against you, or write your name into a song. Honestly, we could be happy, if we first taught our hearts to stand, but just so long as I need to need you, we're two left feet going dancing.

“alright, give me one second,” he said, before calmly telling everyone ahead of him in line to move slightly for the lady near the window. almost all of them cursed at him, but all moved, and thus, the end of the line was far away from her, “better?” he called out, smirking.

“Well, try to hold the line somewhere else. You’re blocking the light with your shadow.” Naomi knew the request wasn’t rational but she had all this energy from the coffee but she was so tired from all the work done. Her brain was about to crash.

“alright, princess, would you like me to rearrange every single person in the place, too, as per your request of optimal lighting?” he asked, laughter swirling in his voice.

“Asher is mine. Asher Evans,” he told him. “I’ll stick with Addy for now, but I’m sure when I inevitably drunk-call you one day I’ll end up using some obscure nickname on you and it’ll stick. Or maybe I’ll call you by your stage name, if you decide to make one.”

“asher is nice,” he said, “yeah, that’s usually what happens. also, no. no stage name for me. my name means god in hebrew, mate, i don’t think it could get much cooler.”

Asher offered no comment to that. Never did he like thinking about what he did to Bryan. So instead he plastered on a smile and said, “no problem. Here-” Asher reached into his pocket and took out the first scrap of paper he found; the back of a ticket stub is what came out. He hastily scribbled his number onto the small rectangle. “-is my number. You can call me whenever you’re ready to present your work, I guess, to the manager, and I’ll set everything up.” Asher handed it to him. “I only ask two things in return: your name, and the right for me to rant to you whenever I need to.” After all, he was an alarmingly good listener. Or maybe the standard for humans was just low, who knows.

addy took the paper and stuck it in his wallet--finally, he thought, a direction. he scratched his chin and nodded. “you have that right,” he said, writing his own number on a receipt he had in his pocket and handing it over. “my name’s adonai, but i generally go by addy. or whatever weird nickname you can think of. you?”

“That works for me. I’ll hang out here. Have some pre-drinks.” Bryan grinned, looking forward to his evening for the first time in a while. “I’ll be here when you’re ready to go.”

“Well, I’m asking you out for a drink. Call it whatever you’d like, Lillis.” Bryan shrugged, “Sure. I don’t mind waiting around and going to another bar if you wanted to.”

“i wouldn’t drink at this place if someone told me it was that or death, honestly. everyone but me is shitty, not to sound arrogant.” it was arrogant. “alright, well, there’s a kitschy pub up the street if you’ll hang around this area for an hour.”

“So why are you standing right in front of me?” Naomi responded, impatient. This was already taking too much of her time.

“because, you’d notice, the line is all the way back here, smart ass,” he said, spitting fire back with the ferocity with which she did.

“are you asking me on a date?” he asked, laughing slightly, clearly joking. “sure, man, you gonna try to go to this shithole?” he gestured again to the bar.

Asher was tuning in, cogs turning in his head as he went over the list of contacts in the music industry he knew, until the guy said Bryan James. Asher’s eyebrows furrowed a bit at that. “Yeah, I know Bryan. We used to date. He’s ‘second guy’ in that long-ass story I told you. He’s not a dick anymore, at least not to me. He’s changed for the better.” Asher cleared his throat, but couldn’t help but wonder how this man knew Bryan enough for him to know if he was a good singer. “You know Sharp Studios? That huge company here in London? My dad knows the guy, so I can get him to get me to get him to get to you, if you want.”

“doesn’t shock me,” he said, “it’s shocking that you did something to him and not the other way around, though.” it was said with no feeling behind, as though he’d spent a long time teaching himself how to be numb towards the words; this, of course, was true. “that’d be awesome, man, thanks so much.”

“What were you going to do after? Had any plans?”

“not really--was planning on listening to a new album i just bought, but otherwise, no. why?”

Naomi finished what seemed like to be her fourth cup of coffee of the day and sat down at the bench. She pulled her headphones out, as well as her laptop and focused on the many tasks at hand. At some point, she felt a shadow, blocking the sunlight from her face and she rolled her eyes. “Can’t you see I’m busy right now?” She spoke annoyed, taking her headphones off.

addy turned around at the sound a voice. “wasn’t even trying to talk to you,” he shot back, cocking an eyebrow at her.

“I’d hope so,” Asher snorted, pursing his lips when he heard the stranger mention his guitar. “Are you a performer, then? ‘Cause hey, if you ever need help, like, making major profit from doing so, or whatever, I can help.” The benefits of being the son of a multi-millionaire. “Assuming you’re good, of course,” Asher clarified quickly.

“i’d call myself a singer/songwriter who plays music on the street for a dollar a day or so,” he said, “performer is a loose term.” he smiled at the other man. “that’s charitable, mate, i like to think i’m good. you can probably ask, uh, bryan james? he’d know. dunno if you wanna talk to him, though, he’s kind of a dick--or he used to be, not sure anymore, haven’t known him in years. nobody else here would really know, and it’d be pretty weird singing to just you.” another topic he could talk about without worry--his music.

“Ah, yeah. Completely out of order.” Bryan managed a quiet chuckle at that. Ah, there was a smile. It was nice to see it. “So um, what time does your shift end?”

“about an hour, i just like to take breaks near the end because this particular shift goes into the nighttime one, so this is when it gets busy.”

“Ah,” Asher hummed, nodding understandingly, “the usual bar scene, then. Good thing you encouraged me to talk about my issues; I would’ve been that one customer; the one that starts crying after three bottles. Do you like it, at least? Bartending, I mean.” Asher can’t imagine this stranger doing this for the rest of his life. What did he go to school for? Why wasn’t he using his degree? Did he get a degree? Did he have another job Asher just didn’t know about? 

“i prefer those ones over the creepy old men trying to pick up girls i have to card,” he said, scratching his beard. he made a face at the question. “pays the bills better than my guitar does,” he explained.

“My brother? Yeah, of course. I was just talking to him on the phone the other night. I don’t get to see him as often as I’d like. You know, he’s married now and everything.” Nicky was a busy, married man. Bryan actually envied him. “Working on being dads and all that now.”

“most people our age are getting married and having kids, dude, you just did it out of order,” he said, “nothing wrong with that, mate.” he gave him a smile for compensation of the slight jealousy addy could hear floating through the other man’s voice.
