thalia-dunne:
“Precisely why I agreed to your idea for you to help me,” Thalia teased. “You thought it was just to allow you to be nice, but really it was so I could show you all the hard work I do.” Thalia was only joking. Addie never made her feel unappreciated, and Thalia was grateful for it.
Addie laughed as she dried her hands with a paper towel and dropped it into the garbage. “Yes, of course. I bow to the fabulous Thalia Dunne.” She curtseyed and couldn’t keep her smile back. “Go ahead, I’m ready for my next directive...” she teased, though she really did need to be given the next instruction for these brownies.
grey-arthur:
“I’m not sure what breed Bertram is,” Arthur admitted, smiling slightly. “He’s a black cat, and his fur is short. I suppose my only problem would be finding him at night, but..” He gave another slight smile and gestured at his eyes. Of course, with his vampire senses, he didn’t really have that issue. “Maine Coons are beautiful animals, though, yes, I can imagine all that fur would be quite the hassle. I used to have hunting dogs with long, thick fur who would come back absolutely slathered in mud.”
Addie nodded as he described his cat. If anyone overheard this, they’d think it was a pair of crazy cat people in a coffee shop. And they honestly really might be. She lifted her tea and took another sip, glancing to the outside; the weather was better than it had been in weeks. “Hunting dogs?” the thought dragged her from her own head, “when was that?” she asked, interested in the story behind them. And knowing this town, it was not recently...
jason-grey:
“Maybe this will help. I see thoughts as mental energy that people give out and we just happen have the ability to pick up those energy” he said, Jason loved science also try using ways to explain things, “right imagining and using your own mental energy to create like a bubble in your mind around you. Keeping everything out” he added. “It will help keep your thoughts in and help prevent people from reading yours and also it will limit and stop the thoughts you pick up from others”
Her steps were mechanical right now. It was all she could do to keep herself from tipping with the screams from the silence of the town. She followed Jason, letting him attempt to explain things in the most linear fashion she had ever heard anyone spoke. He had a problem and solution laid out perfectly in just a few sentences. “Yes...” she managed, looking up to him for just a moment before she looked back to her feet.

She liked this side of him, apparently. Despite how ridiculous he knew it was, it made him hold his shoulders a little straighter, stand a little taller. He walked proudly with virtue beside him. The thought came from somewhere, maybe a book or a poem,, he wasn’t sure. But it came up in his head and fit so well to the way he was feeling at the moment. Even if it would end, he’d tuck this memory in with all the dark ones and he would have something to pull up that was better, lighter. A refuge in the storm when he woke up in a cold sweat from nightmares, something to hold onto when the darkness pulled at him. Something to go back to, something to rely on.
Still, he shot her a reproachful look when the clear thought was like spoken words between the two of them. Left out of the silent conversation, his boss seemed to be at a loss for words, so Nathan turned and tugged Addie back out of the room. He wasn’t going to wait around to be told her couldn’t leave. Even if they fired him, he knew he could find something else. It wasn’t as though he searched for high end jobs to work. Most places had turned him away initially because he was too overqualified for a job, until he refused to tell anyone about his degree or time in the army. It wasn’t anything he was proud of, anyway.

01. six years old.
“Willow Adelaide Leroux!” The young girl cringed as her grandmother screeched from the back porch and the pebbles came crashing down around her. “You do NOT use magic like that! No, m’am.” She turned and frowned, crossing her arms over her chest. “Grandma, I’m 6 now. I can do magic when I want. And I don’t want anyone to call me Willow. I like Addie better.” she demanded, huffing as she stared the older woman down. Her grandmother narrowed her eyes in return. “No matter what your name is, you don’t do magic without an adult around, missy.” she reprimanded again, crossing her arms over her chest just like Addie had. “But Grandma--” Her grandmother shook her head, “No buts, miss Addie...get in here if you want to practice that levitating spell...adult supervision. Grandma has to make sure you’re doing it right. You’re next in line, you know...”

the edge of all we've ever known
nathan-anderson:
He caught whispers, constantly. In tune with her and with her hand in his, he could feel just about everything that passed through her mind. She wanted to know about him, and it was only fair. But he didn’t think she understood that he had no walls up in his mind. He had lost the ability to build those when he lost the ability to withdraw into himself. But he was so careful with his thoughts around her, to keep things surface and simple, forcing himself not to think too deeply and leave trails for her to follow. She would have to dig around on her own, find things without him leading her there. It was why he was so reluctant to let her around him, so afraid she go digging and bump the wrong memory that could scar her for the rest of her life. He wanted better for her. And he knew she would continue to say she was strong and she could handle it, but she hadn’t seen what he had seen. It had broken him, driven him mad. Whether she thought she could handle it or not, he didn’t want her to have to.
Yet it was becoming obvious that she needed to know something of him. She thought to highly of him, assumed that his darkness wasn’t so bad. She kept insisting it, but sh hadn’t seen any of it. She’d seen the barest glimmer when she saw him puking outside the bar, or in a walking trance as he carried her to the car. But she didn’t know why. And he had to show her at least a little, before she pursued anything further. She deserved to at least know the truth about his greatest flaw, before she started thinking about lazy days and calm nights like he would be there. Like he could ever be sane.
“Didn’t say you were looking for normal. Only colored with surprise when you didn’t find it.” He pointed out, thinking that was perfectly normal. His eyes shut briefly in frustration, still walking down the hall. He stopped abruptly, taking her by the arms and letting his fingers grip her as he looked intently at her. “You don’t know what I am.” He stressed, voice low. She thought she didn’t, but she hadn’t seen that side of him. She could go on about how he couldn’t say he wasn’t what she needed, but neither could she say that he was. “Only seeing pieces and bits, puzzle pieces of red here and there that look innocent, but you put them together and realize it’s nothing like you thought. And some don’t have a place, and some are gone, or broken, and it will never fit together right again. The picture is dark and bloody and she can’t comprehend what it looks like because she’s never seen it’s like.”
“Dammit, woman.” She had to be doing it on purpose now. No, he knew she was doing it on purpose. His hands turned a little looser and slipped further down, unable to resist leaning in for one more taste of her lips. It was her fault, knowingly thinking about everything that would push him when she knew he could hear everything, see the clear memories playing in her head. But he pulled away quickly, with a brief huff, and turned to keep walking. They reached the office of his boss and he pushed in without warning. “I’ll take the rest of the day off.” He announced with no preamble. The man looked up with obvious surprise. “You can’t just decide that. There’s a mess in the stairwell to clean up.” He protested, and Nathan didn’t so much as blink. “Never asked off. Always come in on off days. Worked late. One half day won’t be the end.” He challenged, grip tightening a little on Addie’s hand, hearing the wheel’s turn in the man’s thoughts, as his eyes flicked to Addie. “Is he bothering you, miss?”
The pair was holding two separate conversations, and had been since the first time they met. The one conversation on the surface where pretty words were exchanged in a regular fashion and then a much more complicated conversation where multiple lines of thought melded into one dialogue. The thoughts that passed through them each belonged to different thoughts - her strength, his instability, her recklessness in regards to him, his broken pieces - but while each was a different conversation, somehow, it managed to come through her head in one stream of consciousness.
She heard everything and could respond automatically. It was a continuous conversation despite not speaking those words out loud. It wasn’t confusing, though; she was able to keep up it, she wondered if she was overloading him at all. He kept thinking of memories that she wasn’t supposed to see but all she had seen were the briefest of flashes of blood, fire, and explosions. He had been a medic; she had expected that. She wasn’t worried, though, somehow. Nathan was a large man - he was well over 6 feet tall and athletically built; but he was too gentle for anything as dark as he was projecting.
His sudden movement to hold her arms at her side had her freeze up slightly. His change in demeanor confused her, among other things. Her eyes scanned his face for the true meaning behind his constant repetition of his supposedly dark memories and horrific actions. Perhaps he was telling the truth, it was showing in the ferocity that danced in his eyes. She wanted to respond to him verbally, quip that she couldn’t believe him if he wouldn’t let her see it, but his lips were on hers again and she couldn’t have willed herself to fight it even if she had wanted to. And then, he was pulling her along again. Telling me that I’m thinking dangerous things and then you enact them...It wasn’t fair. But she wasn’t going to be the one to complain.
Nathan threw the door open and announced that he was leaving early for the day. Addie couldn’t help the smile on her face, honestly. He was slightly aggressive in the way he stated his faces, leaving no chance for his supervisor to deny what he was saying was true. When the man asked if Nathan was bothering her, she scoffed, a laugh nearly escaping. Nathan’s hand tightened around hers and she reciprocated the motion, releasing her tighter grip after a few seconds. “Not at all. He isn’t the one that’s bothered me.” Her words were sweet in tone, though the meaning was that he had been the one to bother her. Why did everyone assume that he was bothering her? “If anything, I’m the one bothering him.” She lifted her brows, almost challenging him to contest her. Bothering you...among other, much more entertaining things.

the edge of all we've ever known
nathan-anderson:
He didn’t know what to say to make her stop. She didn’t need to blame herself for any of it, and the thought seemed absurd to him. Her memories flitted through his mind, accomplishing nothing but to make him angry at the people who had done this to her. Of course her parents meant well, he knew that much. But he was familiar with the concept of being blamed for everything. What with his supposed curse of bad luck that his older siblings and mother were always so diligent to remind him of. He hated to see that reflected in someone else, hated to see Addie blaming herself for things beyond her control. And still he had no words to correct her, only hopes that she would hear him and know how far from the truth she was. He was broken and unwell and not everything he did would always make sense.
His lips tipped upward in a reluctant half smile. She wasn’t too far off, he would do just about anything to get out the close closet, breathe air that didn’t smell of her, not be tempted to go right back to where they had been before. Because at the moment, it was taking everything in him to not just kiss her again. “Pursues the insane and wonders why it’s not normal when she catches up.” He could have structured his sentence better, mind being clear of everything but her. But it was still easier, and from what he had picked up, she preferred the way that he spoke, in limerick and poetry.
She was thinking dangerous things for him. His hands pulled away from her face, feeling that if he held onto her much longer, she would win whatever silent battle they were having, and he wasn’t ready for that just yet. He had secrets he didn’t want her to know, things that he knew would make her pause every time she looked at him. He still slipped one hand into hers, not ready to let go just yet, and reached for the door. The hallway was empty, thankfully, and he ran a hand through his hair before stepping out and tugging Addie with him.
Addie didn’t know how to help him understand. Despite her exterior that scream strength and stability, she spent a lot of time to get to that point. She hadn’t always been the confident, rational being she was now. She had gone through a tough time with her spell casting in high school, set things on fire when she had meant to simply move them across the backyard. She wanted to ask him so many questions - where he had come from, when his clairvoyance had made its first appearance, why she always caught just flashes of things from him. For the most part, she felt like she gave complete stories but Nathan seemed to have so many walls up to protect himself. It was confusing, though, because he must just be naturally gifted, unless he had practice hiding things from clairvoyants. She obviously struggled because he had her entire life in memories at his disposal if he wanted to see it.
He seemed much less concerned with the fact that she wasn’t everything she seemed to be and more obsessive over the fact that he was not what she expected or wanted. She needed him to understand, somehow, that she had no expectation. She had given up on that a long time ago. She needed very little in her life; the drama was something she had left in the city when she graduated from undergrad and she didn’t need it again any time soon. She wanted lazy days, calm nights, and to spend time with someone who wanted to be with her. That wasn’t a lot to ask for, right?
The way he spoke was pretty, though he seemed to think it was too much for most people. And perhaps he was right, but she wasn’t most people. She had always enjoyed poetry, though. “I never once said I wanted normal; you’re putting words in my mouth.” she retorted, honesty floating in the air like a fine mist for them both to inhale. He still had her hand in his and she caught herself praying to a higher being that he didn’t drop it; instead, he pulled her with him back out into the hallway. “And I swear to God, say it one more time...that you’re not what I need. I dare you.” Addie followed diligently, though there were grains of rice in ballet flats. They were squishing against her feet as she walked and she wrinkled her nose up at the feeling. She heard him, though, thinking about the things she had been thinking about only moments before and it had her smiling.
Apparently, she was thinking dangerous things. Dangerous, how? But she knew what he was referring to because she had gone to that place in her own mind. She was well aware of how she had thought about him when his hands had been on her stomach, his lips on her neck. Her breath had caught in just the right place in her chest to let him know that what he was doing was more than welcome. Dangerous like...her thoughts drifted to when she had curled her fingers into his belt loops and jerked him against her, to when his lips had met her neck and she had whimpered for more. If anyone had been playing a dangerous game, it had been him. She had simply responded to his touch; he had been leading. And she wasn’t interested in taking that role; he had done a perfectly fine job.
maggie-blackwell:
“Understandable,” Maggie said; not only was she able to relate but she had known a few witches in her time who had traveled down the same path as Addie, “Oh?” As Addie continued to reveal more though, Maggie became more intrigued, “The quiet… is that a good thing? Or a bad thing?”
Addie scoffed at herself. “It’s a good thing, Maggie...I’ve been hearing people in overdrive since the bitter ball and it’s been eating away at my sanity. Everyone’s quiet out loud but their thoughts are racing a mile a minute.”
jason-grey:
Jason nodded his head as he listened to her, he could relate. There are times even when he could not focus or sleep at night because of thoughts around him, “well concertinaing and focusing is normally the first step at least for me but there times when i can’t focus or think clearly because of the thoughts” he sighed, “I think i have a solution to that problem. I know a place where you can focus and not hear the thoughts of others as much or at all” he added. Jason knew that taking her to his safe haven would be helpful and the first place to start”
Addie nodded, starting behind Jason. “I’ll try anything...and you’re as normal as they come...” she mused, wrinkling her nose, a voice in the back of her head whispering that Nathan would know what to do. He would reach out and hold her hand and he would make things less loud, less scary. But Nathan wasn’t here. He was back at town hall, probably still cleaning the mess of the soda off the floor that she had left.
thalia-dunne:
“Which is exactly why I gave you those examples, idiot. Oh, also when you forget to turn your hair straightener off.” Thalia watched in amusement as Addie cracked the eggs. Thalia was busy on a cookie recipe. “Make sure there’s no more shell in and then throw that in the sink, and wash your hands again.”
“Honestly, it’s too much work for me…I don’t know how you do this every day...” she mused, tossing the shell into the drain and flipping the faucet gently on. “I appreciate you ten fold now…” she continued, the soap slipping down her hand and she rubbed her hands together.
thalia-dunne:
“Baking is it’s own kind of magic,” Thalia grinned at her. “You can’t rush it. And I highly doubt that you’ll be lighting anything on fire. The only things you set on fire are when you forget to blow out your candles, or leave something on the stove or in the oven.”
“Both of which I have undoubtedly done. I swear, if my head weren’t attached to me, I’d lose it, Thal...” Addie reached for an egg, cracking it over the edge of the large mixing bowl. Then another, and another. The fourth one cracked and a bit of shell automatically fell in. She groaned and fished it out, using her pointer finger nail to gently lift it from the mix.
