When I peered into my reflection a strangely hysterical smile tugged at my lips. I looked like the version of myself that never new angels existed. She actually had color in her face, an ambitious spark in her eyes, a slightly skeptical set to her mouth.

I shook my head and turned away, pulling on a pair of strappy brown sandals. She was long gone, but at least I could still fake it.

"I'm going to lose Ellie over this," I whispered. A warm hand pulled my wrist gently away from my face. Cobra wordlessly started cleaning the blood from my fingers with a warm cloth.

"She loves you," he argued finally, eyes focused downward on the task at hand.

"I'm going to lose her anyway."

The words taste foreign in his mouth, but Baelfire has never felt anything close to this feeling before. This crippling isolation and confusion wrapped up in so much guilt he wants to claw it out of his chest.

“Castor,” he asks again, with the barest note of pleading. “How do I fix this?”

His brother is silent for a long time.

“You’re the King of an underground generation of superhumans,” comes the eventual reply. “You’ll figure it out.”
