I dunno, man, there's something really satisfying in a show that has its climax in a bunch of queer BIPOC pirates slaughtering colonizers.

Something really satisfying in a femme man murdering British sailors on his way to reuniting with the man he loves.

Something really satisfying in an indigenous man strangling be-wigged homophobes with one hand while reading a love letter from his gay lover with the other.

Something really satisfying in a Black woman casually poisoning a bunch of white men who have invaded and belittled her space.

Something even really satisfying in the only casualty of a daring escape being the toxic abusive father figure of the indigenous lead, who apologizes for being an asshole and then carks it.

It’s a good show.

The ending of Impossible Birds is an absolute masterpiece, and I think it's in part because it could've scanned so differently.

Ed is having the worst time ever. He's being actively self-destructive and he's sliding hard into the kind of piracy he said last season he hated. Fang, the crew member who's been with him the longest and knows him best, is upset because he showed so little emotion when Ivan died. He freaked everyone out by waving a gun around and pointing it under his own chin. He finally reached a breaking point with Izzy and shot him. He's overworking the crew and seems focused on just going on raid after raid without end.

And in another show, one less character-driven, Ed's impossible birds bit at the end could've been very different. It could have been an almost triumphant thing, a vindicated sort of rejection of the kind of life Ed thinks he'll never get to have. Ed wouldn't have been happy, but he could've thrown himself into being this sort of pirate with a sort of villianous satisfaction. This sort of presentation of the scene wouldn't even require the writing to be changed at all, it's all down to the acting and music choices. "We'll rob and sail and raise hell forever and ever, without end" - that's the sort of thing we've all heard in dozens of pirate movies before!

But Ed is miserable. He does not want to be doing this. He's visibly holding back tears and struggling to breathe as he tries not to cry. It sounds like he's announcing his own death sentence. And over it all, they play a song that repeats over and over "my heart is full of love, I have nothing else." Ed is in love and he's hurting and he can't see any way forward, and it's so raw and visceral it makes me tear up every time.

This show, guys. Damn. They know what they're doing.

Seriously. You know. I always come back to, the cancellation was rough on all of us. The Show meant so much to all of us. It meant so much to the cast, and the crew. But FUCKING RHYS. It was more than we can EVER fathom to Rhys. "For my own journey it was the best thing I've ever done." This is a man who was raised by a single mother, who went into comedy, and did not grow up rich. This was a man who spent a good chunk of his life thinking he wasn't terribly attractive (besides his ligs) and that comedy was where he shined.

This is the man that spent HIS ENTIRE CAREER being kind to queer people, being kind to women and marginalized groups. And OFMD gave him CONFIDENCE, it gave him a fan base that would go FERAL for him. It gave him a chance to shine, and strut his genius in so many different ways.

I'm really not trying to be parasocial, because I don't know the guy IRL. But he's made so many people's lives better, and whether any of us know him or not HE DESERVES GOOD THINGS.

RHYS deserved season 3 of OFMD, and I'll be damned if I don't fucking keep campaigning in whatever way possible until he gets it.
