Trump Owns New York, Clinton Wins The City.
Tonight was the night that New York held its primaries for the presidential nomination. On the Republican side Donald Trump overwhelmingly won, getting approximately 60% of the vote. Kasich placing second with a distant 25%, and Cruz only getting a mere 15% of the vote. On the Democratic side Hillary Clinton won with approximately 58% of the vote while Bernie Sanders received about 42%. The Republican results doesn't surprise me at all, and further cements Donald Trump as the front runner. The Democratic side however, leaves more to be explained.
It was no big surprise that Trump won the New York State primaries, nor was it a big surprise that Cruz lost by such enormous margins. Apparently, you can't use “New York values” as an insult to try to win over Southern votes and then come to New York and expect them to forget. By Trump winning the majority of votes in New York it gives him a great deal of momentum moving forward in the upcoming states next week. Ted Cruz however has a lot of making up to do. John Kasich is just biding its time to the convention where he hopes crazy things will happen. Him placing 2nd tonight, doesn’t really matter, because it is still losing by a crushing 35%.
If I am going to be honest with myself, I must admit that a part of me kind of knew that Hillary Clinton was going to win tonight. I held out hope that Bernie was going to win his home state, but to no avail. HOWEVER...If you look at the county by county results, something interesting happens.
Notice how Bernie Sanders won the vast majority of Upstate New York. Clinton may have won the most of the big cities, including NYC, but really only there. In the rural areas, Sanders won most of those counties. Is this a good sign for Bernie for next week when we go to states that relate more to upstate new york? Only time will tell, but to quote Cenk Uygur from The Young Turks, we can Whisper of a Dream.
Next week,on April 26th, five States will be up for grabs. Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island will all hold their primaries, where 384 delegates are on the line. Four out of those five states are Closed Primaries, meaning you have to be registered with a specific party to be able to vote for that candidate. Which doesn’t necessarily bode well for Senator Sanders. That being said, there’s still hope to be had.
Connecticut allows same-day registration, which brings in many new voters and allows independants to change party affiliation the day the go to vote. New Yorkers had to change their party status SIX months prior to the election, while new time voters had until the end of March. Independent voters overwhelmingly choose Bernie over Hillary, and are some of his most passionate supporters. Which is good for those living in Rhode Island, which allows independents to vote for whichever candidate they feel would be the best President, regardless of party affiliation.
Would it have been better for Bernie if he won New York instead of losing by approx. 16%.....obviously. It would have been better if he lost by 4%. Keep in mind that there is currently a lawsuit that will be looking into the over 100,000 voters who had their voter registration purged, interestingly enough, in Bernie Sanders neighborhood of Brooklyn. How much that will ultimately affect the results, I’m not sure. But, am I ready to throw in the towel and give up????? Absolutely not.
