NIWRC (national indigenous women’s resource center)

and here’s a map of what indigenous land you are living on if you want to donate specific towards those people and nations 💗
I feel like I should make a post about this because it’s not something that’s very well-known, and that Americans in particular may need to know about given the uncertain state of our healthcare system at the moment. I’ve wanted to write this out for a while, It’s kind of a long post, so sorry about that!
If you have an emergency and have to go to the hospital, you’ll owe the hospital a lot of money. (I got into a car wreck and broke my ankle and my arm. My hospital bill was around $20,000)
You’ll also owe the ambulance provider, if you need one. (My ambulance bill was about $800)
You may get separate bills from the anesthesiologist or surgeon. (My anesthesiologist bill was $1,700)
You may need follow-up appointments. (My orthopedic surgeon billed me for the appointments and his surgery together and it was about $1,000)
You’ve also got to pay for medical equipment you need afterward, like crutches or a walking boot. (Mine cost about $75)
Altogether, I ended up with almost $24,000 in medical debt from one car accident. That’s a really scary number for someone like me who makes $10/hr at a 12 hour a week job.
I got my debt down to $1075 by making some phone calls and submitting some paperwork.
The first thing I did was contact the hospital. They don’t make it easy to find, but many hospitals (perhaps most hospitals?) have financial assistance programs for people who can’t afford medical bills. I don’t make a lot of money, and I have bills to pay, so they were able to help me. I called the billing department and asked if they had any assistance programs for low income people who can’t pay their bills. I had to call multiple times, and I got transferred in circles by people who didn’t know what I was talking about. Finally, I got an appointment with someone in “Eligibility Services” (I don’t know what other hospitals call it, if it’s something different). I had to bring my pay stubs and copies of all of my bills. When I got to the hospital for the appointment, nobody knew what I was talking about so I had to wander a little to find where I needed to go. I spoke with the guy in Eligibility Services, and I waited for a decision on how much of the bill they would forgive. A month later, I got a call telling me it was totally forgiven.
I did the same thing for my ambulance bill and my anesthesiologist, but the process was a LOT easier. I just had to mail some paperwork and it was totally forgiven.
I didn’t bother with the medical equipment suppliers, since the bills came from separate companies and I didn’t feel like going through the process twice for $75. I was assured at the hospital that they had similar programs for debt forgiveness, so I could have probably avoided paying that too.
The only thing I couldn’t get taken care of was the surgeon/follow-up appointment cost, but they were able to put me on a no-interest payment plan.
Medical debt is scary because it’s something that can come from stuff that’s already really scary. I didn’t need the burden of $24,000 in debt on top of trying to get around on a crutch with a broken arm (it’s not easy, believe me!).. but I can’t imagine what it would be like with a bigger debt or a more severe medical emergency. I see lots of people in even worse trouble than I was in, both financially and medically. Please know that there are options for you when that GoFundMe doesn’t do enough. Even if your income is higher than mine, it’s worth a shot even for partial debt forgiveness.
I am about 900% sure there are people who don`the know this.
PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU LIVE IN AMERICA AND HAVE MEDICAL BILLS
I had to do this once as well and I can ABSOLUTELY confirm that this is true.
Get in contact with the hospital. Don’t just…sit there and let the anxiety grow and panic and then ignore it in an effort to find peace.
Hey psst @allfrogsarefriends i found it.
additionally, your state may have laws – often called charity care laws – that restrict the hospital and other providers from charging you anything at all or require the hospital/providers to only charge you a percentage of what your care costs, depending on your income. if you fall under the federal poverty line, in some states that have charity care laws, you cannot be required to pay a single cent if you are a resident of that state.
if anyone has the time to sign this petition that would be great!! it’s so disabled people can get married and keep their benefits!!

this article goes into more detail about how disabled people lose their benefits when they get married if you feel like reading about it!!
Discouraging disabled people from marrying, or worse, incentivizing them to divorce may not be the intent of Social Security rules, but it i
survey about autism and gender divergence
I haven't posted in ages and that's because I've been busy in college studying psychology (my special interest!). As part of that, I'm researching how autism and gender variance connect. You all know how important it is for autistic and trans people to do our own research so here is your chance!
Just click this link to take a survey about your experience. (If you're not trans or autistic, please still take it!)
Taken! :D some note if you have ability / want note: maybe nice to put warning that asks for sex on there. Understand why good for data, but also can be distressing for some. Could do, but warning nice.
With also question about diagnosis on autism, had trouble answering because do not have “traditional diagnosis” (no big test or paper) but have extensive conversation and group with professionals and family that show have autism, without big official record & test because not have money/able to get those parts. So not quite self diagnosis, but not quite professional diagnosis. Suspected make sense almost—but know have autism not just suspect.
Also no place to put if in process of diagnosis, or for autistic maybe diagnosis when very young but not know info about that diagnosis, which I know several autistic in that situation. Know some also misdiagnosis, but still have professional diagnosis when sure not have autism but something else. Also no place for “uncertain” (not quite self diagnosis, not prof diagnosis, but not certain if not autistic). Not mad about survey not have these option, not sure if unreasonable to use my thoughts in particular survey, but maybe feedback or thing to consider. Perhaps if makes sense to find other wording for options of other experience with diagnosis status/knows autistic. This if, of course, you are looking for feedback or edit survey. If not then feel free to not react.
Also have question about purpose for survey specifics. Love having more survey built by and about trans & gender nonconforming autistic people :) looks like, though, survey is just looking at gender, sex at birth or bio sex, autistic known status, and then goes through autistic traits—looks like Autism Quotient. Makes curious what specifically the survey is taking info for? Is it looking at what traits autistic often with what gender, sex, and status of autism self-knowledge? Or check for if some who think not autistic seem to match lots of autistic trait, or opposite? Not inherently complaining that asks for traits, but curious what means, what for, why ask AQ but not other things about autism & gender, if you are willing or able to answer.
Thanks for taking it! You have really good points about diagnosis. I can’t change it now but if I do more research I definitely will.
I’m looking at if autistic people are more likely to be transgender. If they are, then I want to see if they’re more likely to be a certain gender. I also want to know if trans people are more likely to be autistic. The AQ is because I can’t diagnose people, so I need a way to screen people and not miss any autistic people. I hope later on I can do more in depth research and use more thorough screening!

just to be clear, the fact that music was nominated for a golden globe is absolutely disgusting. every single (adult) involved in that gross, ableist movie should be sickened by themselves.
for those of you who don't know, music (2021) is a movie being directed by sia about a nonverable autistic girl. not only does it not include any actually autistic people in the movie itself but it also only took advice from autism speaks which is looked at as a hate group by the majority of the autistic community. leaked scenes have also shown the movie glorifying prone restraints which are incredibly dangerous and have resulted in major injuries and even death to disabled people as recently as last year.
autistic people just like me have been incredibly outspoken about how harmful this movie is but the allistic have been mostly silent. we are already seeing reviews calling this movie 'inspiring' and important' and it's absolutely horrific! we need your help calling this out. please stand with us and call out this disgusting display of disrespect to autistic folks.
💛 - your local actually autistic pal
p.s. please, please reblog if you aren't autistic.

Today, January 27, is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Please take time to remember and reflect on all the different people murdered in the Holocaust, and those who survived its horrors. Jewish people, Roma people, LGBTQ people, the disabled, political prisoners, and many more groups.
They deserve to be remembered. They need to be.
2020 marks the 75th year since the liberation of Auschwitz. The number of Holocaust survivors decreases each year.
We must study and learn about the Holocaust. We must listen to the testimonies of those who survived.
We owe them that much.
an author i love just tweeted about how “big joy and small joy are the same” and how she was just as content the other night eating chocolate and cuddling her dog as she was on her Big Trip to new york and honestly. i think that’s it. this morning i was listening to an audiobook while baking shortbread in my joggers and i realised i really didn’t care what Big Things happened in my future as long as i could keep baking and reading at the weekend and maybe that is the kind of bar we have to set to guard ourselves against disappointment. just appreciate and cherish the mundane stuff and see everything else as a bonus.
found it - she was replying to this thread that starts “unpopular opinion: i don’t think your life has to have a purpose, or you a grand ambition; i think it’s okay to just wander through life finding interesting things until you die” and i for one think that’s fucking brilliant
If you save happiness for only the big important moments, you won’t have a very happy life, but if you allow happiness to happen from even the smallest things, your life will be full of happiness
In regards to what happened yesterday (Jan 6th 2020), Rep. Cori Bush is calling for signatures to hold those at fault accountable for the coup. They’re very close as of 8:30 AM EST, but you can sign here.
NON AMERICANS: PLEASE DO NOT SIGN. THIS NEEDS AMERICAN SIGNATURES ONLY. PLEASE GO DONATE TO OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AND PEOPLE IN NEED. DO NOT FAKE A NAME AND ZIP CODE. /srs

It's been very overshadowed by the other events, but both seats in Georgia went blue. This is a huge shift and it was one hard won and we all owe that to the black community, the Hispanic community, and the indigenous community and all the other incredibly suppressed communities for getting to the polls and fighting through the enormous roadblocks set up to stop them and the very real danger they faced to make this happen.
You know those posts that are supposed to help with dissociation/derealization and psychosis, like the “this is real, there’s nobody watching you, this isn’t the matrix” kinda posts? Am I the only one who gets worse from those posts? They just make me really acutely aware of my dissociation/derealization because I’m thinking about whether I’m doing it or not. Anyway, please remember to tag posts about that stuff even if they’re positive/helpful, maybe with #unreality mention or something like that.
anyways, fuck sia. fuck aut$im $peaks. instead of supporting both her & that ugly abusive org, support & DONATE TO: AWN( autistic women & nonbinary network ), ASAN( autism self advocacy network ), autism & race reparations for black & POC autistics, & if ur autistic rb & add ur cashapp or kofi or put it in the replies. here is my kofi stop supporting people who hate us so damn much & start supporting us actually autistic.
here’s the petition!! https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/justice-saraya-rees-1

Tweet one: saraya rees is a mentally ill black 14 year old who was sentenced to jail for pouring gasoline on her parent’s door in a state of psychosis. saraya DID NOT attempt to light the fire and DID NOT have the intention to light it. in an attempt to get help, her parents called (1/2)
Tweet two: a wellness center that lead to the center calling the police. saraya was then handcuffed and was sentenced to 11 years in juvy prison for attempted murder/assault. saraya was questioned WITHOUT A LAWYER PRESENT and her parents were not allowed to testify. Tweet three: please sign the White House petition to get her justice! you need to check your email after you signed to confirm your signature.
Tweet four: I feel the need to add it’s best not to sign it if you’re not american as at best it can get rejected and at worst it can invalidate the whole petition. /end id]
Joyous Kwanzaa to all y’all celebrating!
Hi friends! A lot of you guys have been sending me ask about the situation at Xica’s village and how to help. After talking to the family, we’ve organized a GoFundMe to raise donations.
The money will be spent on food and, if there’s a surplus, medical supplies. Each food basket contains dry and canned goods that covers all the basic nutrients, lasts long and is easily stored, and serves a family of four for a month.
Because the money conversion ratio is so strong, we can make one of those for $3USD, which is why I encourage people to donate even if it’s very little!
Here’s the link and thanks for everyone who reached out and wants to help!
