[icon: blue photo of evening sky with dark outline art of planets and stars.] they/them Hi! This is my disability side blog. Special Interests: anthropology, superheroes (Batman/DC comics), writing, languages, genealogy, geography.
This is my disability, chronic illness, and neurodivergency focused sideblog. Covering chronic pain, disabilities of all kinds (as well as some adjacent topics that can be but aren’t always disabilities), mobility aids, autism, ableism, accessibility, and more. Note: I hate the PACE trial, Hans Asperger, and Autism Speaks.
Has variable talking abilities, so if notice talks weird, that is just normal for me!
Also I try to be an ally to other disabled people and other marginalized groups, but I’m always learning. When I do something to hurt others, feel free to tell me (or block me!). I would rather know than continue hurting people.
ID: A 3D render of 5 brightly coloured manual wheelchairs in front of a disability pride flag. White text overlaid on the image reads "Manual Wheelchair Models" "Version 2". /End ID
I've updated the wheelchair models I released for last year's Disability pride month to include adjustable shaders/materials that carry over into programs like Clip Studio Paint for folks who just want to use them as reference, and (what I hope is) a clearer guide on how to use, import/export and make alterations to them!
Each chair is designed to suit different kinds of characters with different disabilities and lifestyles. The chairs available right now are:
2 Active urban-style chairs (one of which includes a rear-mounted power assist)
1 off-road active chair
1 children's wheelchair
and 1 standard "hospital" wheelchair.
and I'm planning to add 2 more by the end of disability pride month (2025)
You can download them for free On Ko-Fi!
They are pay-what-you-want, but there's no minimum price, so if you'd like them for free, just put $0 in
Or you can download the pack directly from Google Drive
included in each download is:
the original .blend file for each wheelchair model
an .obj and .mtl file for each chair that can be imported into other 3D modelling software or into some art programs like Clip Studio Paint
A link to a user's manual that explains how to make alterations to the files for those less familiar with Blender, and how to import and save them to your Clip Studio Paint Asset/Material library on both desktop and ipad versions of CSP.
I would really like to keep updating these files and eventually include rigs for each (one of these was rigged previously, but I'm not sure what happened, it seems to have broken after one of the Blender updates)
Just like last time, they're completely free to use, with the caveat that they can't be resold or used in AI training. Credit isn't required but is greatly appreciated (as are tags so I can see art that used them!)
It can be easy to confuse the two, but you don't actually "wish you were more disabled", you wish your disability was taken seriously and was properly accommodated and that you had access to the support and resources you need - and that desire is so valid. You deserve more. But the sad truth is that no level of disability actually guarantees a sufficient level of support. So you have to work to separate your very understandable desire for more support from the incorrect assumption that other disabled people are consistently receiving what you aren't. All of us are getting fucked over in this society, and no group of disabled people actually has it easy.
Have you considered the fact that disabled people seeing ableism in every day language and life says more about society and its culture/history than it does about disabled people as a whole?
Oh! You’re suffering? Well looks like you absolutely must live a Perfect Life :) no drinking, smoking, drugs, “unhealthy” food, inactivity, kinky sex, clubbing, partying, or anything else at all that steps outside of the absolute ideal of Good Health. If you don’t do everything just right, it’s your fault for hurting yourself and you will be looked down upon, we’ll all be disappointed. Did I mention that you really shouldn’t be drinking coffee? Tattoos and piercings aren’t really great for you either…
"that doesn't sound sincere- it sounds rehearsed" is one of the most devastating and fucked-up statements you can make to anyone in the neurodivergent/ADHD/Autistic/Schizophrenic/Disordered Personality sphere. yeah bitch it's rehearsed. because i wanted to get it right when i said it
I’ve recently discovered how much better life can be when we normalize this. My best friend and I have started saying “hang on, I’m scripting” when we need a minute to mentally rehearse during big conversations (and “bear with me, I’m doing improv” when we’ve reached the end of our script and start to struggle with words lol)
[imagine description: the disability pride month flag with text edited on to say what each color stripe represents. Black stripe "mourns disabled people who have died from negligence, suicide, illness & eugenics" Green stripe "sensory disabilities" blue stripe "psychiatric disabilities" white stripe "non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities" yellow stripe "cognitive & intellectual disabilities" red stripe "physical disabilities" there's also another black stripe at the other side with text that reads "July is disability pride month" :end of imagine description]
US based but it’s similar reasons in other countries. and of course many companies have international locations. idk if that’s why it’s happening with sour patch kids but this is a thing
My nephew is very allergic to eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame. Last year my sister discovered all hot dogs and hamburger buns now contain sesame. Not "may contain", but listed in the ingredients. This year basically every brand of sliced bread also now contains sesame, making it very difficult to find bread items he can eat.
They're just adding it to their products, so they can just list it as an ingredient and not bother with worrying about cross contamination. And they aren't even bothering with telling anyone. Capitalism is going to kill us all.
"Which brings us back to Kellogg’s. Back in 2016, the company found a way around the added burden and expense of complying with the FSMA: they simply began adding trace amounts of peanut flour to their cracker products. Doing so allowed them to list peanuts as an ingredient of the product, freeing them from having to prevent cross-contact.
At the time, Kellogg’s notified Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) about the impending change and left it to them to warn the allergic community. In this case, Pearson’s didn’t even bother as near as we can tell."
Drinking soda is better than drinking nothing all day. Eating ice cream for dinner is better than eating nothing for dinner. Eating salsa is better than having no produce in your diet at all.
Water is way more hydrating than soda, but soda is more hydrating than nothing. A balanced meal is way more nutritious than ice cream, but ice cream is more nutritious than nothing.
Something is better than nothing. Some hydration is better than no hydration. Some nutrients are better than no nutrients. Some produce is better than no produce.
Don't let societally imposed food guilt trick you into believing that nothing is a better choice. Nourishing your body, however you can, is always the better choice. Fed is best. Always.
I bought Sir Cameron online this morning, finished it this evening, would have read it faster if not for work! I am absolutely obsessed with everyone in this book. I felt a this understanding of Cameron. his panics, his obsessive thought spirals, and putting himself into harms way to avoid a different perceived danger reminded me a lot of when OCD takes over the whole system. I really loved seeing a sympathetic reading of a guy who is scared.
that’s so interesting, because I didn’t intentionally give him OCD traits, but it is something I’ve been diagnosed with. so I guess it may have bled through a bit?
"I'm only criticizing the people who are lazy on purpose" is just not the reassurance people think it is when nearly every disabled person has been accused of not really being disabled and just being lazy on purpose
it’s such a basic part of the reality of disabled people as a whole but it’s STILL so hard to get ppl to understand that some people will simply die without 24/7 care. their care is not for comfort, it’s not for fun, it’s literally a matter of life and death. “if their care was taken away i’m sure they’d learn to suck it up like the rest of us!” – something ive heard time and time again. no they wouldn’t, they would die. they HAVE died. they continue to die as cuts are made to welfare and health. why is this so impossible for people to grasp.
So today I tripped. Fell flat on my face, it was awful but ultimately harmless. My service dog, however, is trained to go get an adult if I have a seizure, and he assumed this was a seizure (were training him to do more to care for me, but we didn’t learn I had epilepsy until a year after we got him)
I went after him after I had dusten off my jeans and my ego, and I found him trying to get the attention of a very annoyed woman. She was swatting him away and telling him to go away. So I feel like I need to make this heads up
If a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help
Don’t get scared, don’t get annoyed, follow the dog! If it had been an emergency situation, I could have vomited and choked, I could have hit my head, I could have had so many things happen to me. We’re going to update his training so if the first person doesn’t cooperate, he moves on, but seriously guys. If what’s-his-face could understand that lassie wanted him to go to the well, you can figure out that a dog in a vest proclaiming it a service dog wants you to follow him
its so awkward when people ask me why i dropped out and i have to be like "inadequate disability support" bc no one wants to hear this. they're always like i thought they had to provide that though isn't it the law? girl you might want to sit down i have some bad news about the litigation-based enforcement of the americans with disabilities act
then if i do say that theyre like, couldnt you sue? well theoretically maybe but not without spending more money than i have and putting myself through absolute hell. so no. no i can't.
I genuinely don't understand what's wrong with dieting. Having a normal BMI is healthy. Of course you can be a little bit overweight for many reasons and that's also okay, but 300+ lbs is just too much. (yeah, bmi can be a little bit inaccurate due to muscle mass, but if a person doesn't work out, no way their excess weight is something other than fat)
It's unhealthy and if something is unhealthy it's also can't be beautiful. It's just how attractivness works lol.
I don't support any kind of eating disorders, but as a part of society you should be productive to it and not a burden to health-care.
I'm not trying to offend anyone and if I did I'm sorry. Its just a really interesting topic for me and I want to discuss it
then allow me to shed some light on the subject. I have a wealth of resources on my home page for you to explore and educate yourself with. I’m not interested in discussing this with you because quite frankly, you are not ready to have this discussion until you’ve begun deconstructing your anti-fat bias and ableism. first, please familiarize yourself with the studies complied on dieting, intentional weight loss, and the relationship between size and health.
"Something unhealthy can't be attractive" WHAT are you TALKING about.
Women used to wear lead-based cosmetics to make themselves appear paler.
Women used to use belladonna to cover up redness and dilate their eyes.
Some people take up smoking with the express purpose of losing weight so that they'll be "more attractive."
The desired level of extreme skinnyness in the 90s and 00s was called "heroin chic" because women were expected to look like addicts wasting away.
Young men are taking hammers to their jaws to "looksmaxx."
Skinny people destroy their bodies to look hot and are praised for it. But god forbid a fat person want to call themselves hot. That's impossible, because being "unhealthy" is antithetical to attractiveness. Fucking sure.
After reading “Belly of the Beast,” it was like taking a step to the side when everything relied on forced perspective to make sense. The obsession with healthiness, when healthiness is systematically denied to specifically Black people; the obsession with thinness as a rebuke to Black people and Black bodies… Anti-fatness is part of the US caste system.
this is a reminder to reach out to the developers of your aac app to suggest things. i use speech assistant aac (which is only like $22 USD on ios and theres a free version on android and the paid version on android is roughly $10 USD) and i’ve made several suggestions and they have been nothing but nice and accepting and quick to respond to me!!! if you have suggestions for your aac app, try it!!! it might just work!!!
And I'm not saying disability has to be the focal point of everyone's activism - there are countless causes which are just as worthy of dedicated attention - but if disabled people are not a part of your analysis and activism in any capacity, that IS bad, because there are disabled people in every demographic, and anyone can become disabled at any point.
