crying males:Â âdisney is destroying star wars with female leadsâ
ârogue one also has a female lead? ughâ
âgreat another mary sueâ
me:
I donât mind if Star Wars has a female lead, as the Star Wars franchise has always been home to strong female characters, I do care if she is another giant Mary Sue like Rey was. Rey was so Mary Sue that it became distracting to the movie. A character with no force training takes down a trained Sith Knight, she flies a freighter designed for two pilots with no help despite the fact she had never left the planet before, and she can also repair said ship with no problem because she had spent years salvaging parts off of a broken star destroyer? The only thing she didnât do was have all of the male characters try to romance her at once and I thank the force for that small concession.
The only good new character in episode 7 was Finn. The rest of the characterization fell flat or was just used to make Rey ascend to Mary Suedom.
anakin built the worlds fastest pod racer and c3po when he was nine
the first time luke flew a spaceship he destroyed the fucking death star.
Kylo Ren: Not a Sith. Not fully trained. Also? Injured by a bowcaster that weâd seen could take out several stormtroopers at a time.Â
Rey: Literally spent all of her downtime flying a flight simulator to the point that it could no longer throw anything at her she couldnât handle. For all kinds of ships. Nor did she solely scavenge star destroyers. She spent her entire life scavenging every imaginable wreck on Jakku, and her survival depended on her learning what ships had what parts and what was valuable. This, while competing with other scavengers, most of them working in teams.Â
Which meant she had to learn how to fight, or else she wouldnât have gotten out of childhood.
Basically, Rey had way more in-canon reasoning to be as good as she was than Luke Skywalker didâwho basically went from never flying much out of atmo to piloting an X-wing under combat conditions and rocking it⊠apparently just because of genetics and the Force. Who then went on, only half-trained, into a fight that even YODA thought he was going to die in, and survived, against a man literally birthed by the Force, trained as both a Jedi AND a Sith, with about 25 years of combat experience under his belt, whereas Luke had had a lightsaber for about 3 years. What a Mary Sue he was, huh?
Rey had more reason to be what she was than Anakin Skywalker, who accidentally wound up in a fighter and accidentally destroyed a droid ship. Anakin who was such a Mary Sue he was LITERALLY A VIRGIN BIRTH. How Mary Sue is THAT?
The creators, in short, HAD TO GIVE REASONS for every single thing Rey knew how to do, because of assholes like this person, who would take any special skill she had as proof that she was a âMary Sueâ just because she was a female character. No one bothered to give those reasons to Luke or Anakin. Because theyâre the hero. OF COURSE they can do the impossible. But Rey? Jesus, what a Mary Sue.
Reblogged for excellent commentary.Â
(Iâd thought the Rey-hating twerp up there was like sixteen, in which case Iâd cut them some slack, but nope turns out theyâre in their 40s.)
On top of all that, with a single exception, all of Reyâs extraordinary feats are stuff we explicitly see folks with no Force training do in the original trilogy.
Pulling a lightsabre to her hand? Luke did it before he ever met Yoda. Granted, Luke had a visibly harder time of it, but as he was concussed and suffering from mild hypothermia at the time, he jolly well should have.
Firing ranged weapons with uncanny accuracy? Luke again, in his famous trench run - and again, he was untrained at the time.
Resisting mental manipulation? Freaking Jabba the Hutt pulled that one off, and not only is he not trained as a Force-user, as far as we know heâs not even Force sensitive.
(Yes, the EU tries to wave that last one away by asserting that all members of Jabbaâs species are naturally immune to mind control, but come on - thatâs the same EU lore that insists that Rodians are literally a culture of bounty hunters because the single Rodian we see on-screen is a bounty hunter.)
Of course, there is one exception - one feat of Force manipulation that weâve never seen an untrained wielder pull off before: Jedi mind tricking the First Order storm trooper. You know, a brainwashed child soldier conditioned nearly from birth to display reflexive and unthinking obedience to authority - the writers could scarcely have given her an easier target.
In sum, the stunts Rey pulls off are entirely within the demonstrable capabilities of an untrained Force user. Youâd think these jokers had never seen the original films!

âAngelsâ block the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting Orlando victimâs funeral
When a handful of Westboro Baptist Church members showed up Saturday at the funeral of Orlando shooting victim Christopher Leinonen, counterprotesters donning large, white angel wings were there to shield mourners. Members of the Orlando Shakespeare Theater put together the wings as a symbolic but also literal screen between the WBC and funeral attendees. An Orlando Police tweet later proved the efforts to stop the WBC worked.
Okay, but Iâm actually crying tears of frustration, because the article doesnât even mention the history behind this act.
Thereâs a reason this was undertaken by a theatre company. It means they knew The Laramie Project. It means they knew that the idea for the angel wings came from their use to block the WBC at the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was murdered in Wyoming in 1998.
The original âAngel Actionâ was a counterprotest organized by LGBTQ activist Romaine Patterson, who had been a friend of Shepardâs in high school. This is part of our history. Weâve been shielding our loved ones from hate groups while we bury our dead for decades â and that deserves acknowledgement.
This got me dying
who paid for this study bruh
itââs literally seasoning. thatâs it. thatâs what make food taste good.
I looked at the picture and said seasoning before I scrolled down to see the rest.Â
Though if you actually read the article, youâll find that a. the study in question was performed at an Indian institution, not a Western one, and b. their conclusions are actually pretty interesting; in a nutshell, Indian cuisine tends to use more strongly contrasting spice pairings and spices that have a smaller overlap with the flavour profiles of the accompanying foodstuffs even when compared with other South Asian culinary traditions.
You can find the cited paper here (warning - math):
http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1502/1502.03815.pdf
An excerpt from the Washington Post article, if the study itself is too heavy:
If you were to hold a microscope to most Western dishes, you would find an interesting but not all-too-surprising trend. Popular food pairings in this part of the world combine ingredients that share like flavors, which food chemists have broken down into their molecular parts - precise chemical compounds that, when combined, give off a distinct taste.
Most of the compounds have scientific names, though one of the simpler compounds is acetal, which, as the food chemist George Burdock has written, is ârefreshing, pleasant, and [has a] fruity-green odor,â and can be found in whiskey, apple juice, orange juice and raw beets. On average, there are just over 50 flavor compounds in each food ingredient.
A nifty chart shared by Scientific American in 2013 shows which foods share the most flavor compounds with others and which food pairings have the most flavor compounds in common. Peanut butter and roasted peanuts have one of the most significant overlaps (no surprise there). But there are connections that are more difficult to predict: strawberries, for instance, have more in common with white wine than they do with apples, oranges or honey.
Chefs in the West like to make dishes with ingredients that have overlapping flavors. But not all cuisines adhere to the same rule. Many Asian cuisines have been shown to belie the trend by favoring dishes with ingredients that donât overlap in flavor. And Indian food, in particular, is one of the most powerful counterexamples.
Researchers at the Indian Institute for Technology in Jodhpur crunched data on several thousand recipes from a popular online recipe site called TarlaDalal [âŠ] which used a total of 200 ingredients.  They examined how much the underlying flavor compounds overlapped in single dishes and discovered something very different from Western cuisines. Indian cuisine tended to mix ingredients whose flavors donât overlap at all.
âWe found that average flavor sharing in Indian cuisine was significantly lesser than expected,â the researchers wrote.
In other words, the more overlap two ingredients have in flavor, the less likely they are to appear in the same Indian dish.

Colorado English teacher Brittni Darrasâ Facebook post about a student who attempted suicide is currently going viral. Her message is incredibly important â including but not limited to, the part about Safe 2 Tell.

I think more teachers should be encouraged to do this. Often times I feel like schools become knowledge factories, when universally the teacher kids will point out as the one they learned the most from is the one with whom they formed a personal bond.
