How the Kirby series helped me realize I was transgender
When I was younger I used to play Kirby 64 when I visited mom's house. Me and my half brother both played video games, so we would play the mini games and I would always pick the character which we both called the “painter kid”, because we couldn't tell if it was a boy or a girl. As a kid I always wanted to be “not a girl but also not a boy” but I didn't know that being non binary was possible, because I was never really exposed to anything LGBT (this was not my parents fault, it was just that there was little info available at all about it) This “painter kid” was like the only “gender neutral” character that I was exposed to as a kid, even if she was not intended to appear gender neutral. I only learned that Adeleine was a girl year later when I decided to get into Kirby again (and I was kind of disappointed to learn that). Kirby, of all things, introduced to me the idea that someone could be neither a boy nor a girl, something that 6 year old me previously thought was impossible.
Whenever I feel like giving up, I remember when I was 6 and realizing that I wanted “who I am on the outside” to match “who I am on the inside”, then I don't want to betray myself by living a lie and trying to just be the gender I was born as.
Maybe I sound insane.
you’re welcome
