“Well, screw her. I’m sure your boss would’ve understood anyways. People are just so judgmental. I mean with your hair I’d think she’d trust you extra hard,” she shook her head. “Sure, I mean it’s 5 PM somewhere in the world, right?”

“My boss definitely would have understood but would probably still fire me anyway because ‘there’s not violence in the workplace’.” she said, making air quotes with her hands and letting out an exasperated sigh. “Thanks, I try to make it cute so that everyone wants me to do their hair.” Shaking her head excitedly she said, “Exactly -that’s why I drink all the time.” she let out a huge laugh.

“If you think you’ve got what it takes to join my team of ragtag bartenders, then you’re more than welcome. I’ve heard I’m a bit of a hardass boss, though,” she remarked, hand on her hip, to which one of her bartenders snorted with laughter in reply. “Hey! Shut your mouth and get this girl her drink before I fire your lazy butt,” Meg joked, playfully punching her colleague on the arm before turning back to face the younger woman. “Ok, so maybe I’m not as tough a boss as I think I am. But don’t go spreading that info around; I can’t have the rest of my customers thinking I’m a pushover. They’ll be trying to get freebies out of me all the damn time.” Meg’s eyes widened as the girl admitted to drinking on the job and couldn’t hold back a laugh at the thought of her cutting hair whilst drunk. “I can imagine that would either end in a bloody disaster or be the newest trend to hit the hairdressing world.”

Adriana watched the interaction Meg had with the bartender. The girl had never had a relationship like that with any of her boss’s and the idea of having one like that was completely foreign to her. The Latina laughed. “Consider my lips sealed.” she sad, taking her fingers and zipping her lips shut figuratively. “As much as I would love to come work for you, I’ve already got two job, technically, and can’t even seem to juggle those like a real adult.” she said with a roll of her eyes and a sarcastic laugh. “Yeah, I probably shouldn’t do it but when you’re dealing with customers like that woman I had this morning - wine is necessary to get through the day. I could cut someone’s hair with my eyes closed. A little wine isn’t going to hurt them- and you’re right...Knowing drunk me, I would probably come up with a whole new style that everyone in town would be coming to me for.” Adriana sighed in relief. “Yes, a drink is so needed right now.”

“I feel like people above fifty should just have their own special salon, ‘ya know? Like—obviously they’re all old fashioned and shit,” Sofia said with a shake of her head, crossing her arms over her chest. “Good job. You should’ve taken a picture or something, I tend to block out anyone with a bad head of hair, it’s atrocious. Better to be passive aggressive than actually violent though, hopefully she learned her lesson,” she shrugged. “I know I am.” Signaling over to the counter, the brunette smiled at the girl, pushing a glass towards her. “Pick your poison.“

“Actually.” Adriana began. “Some women over fifty are doing really cute stuff to their hair now. I would have never expected that until I started working. It’s the women over 70 that wanted it plain, simple, and old fashioned as hell.” she frowned. “I just wanted her to know that being rude doesn’t get you anywhere in life and that people actually hate you if you’re a dick. I really should have taken pictures, but knowing that woman she probably would have yelled at me again for shoving a camera in her face.” she shrugged. “Oh, anything with tequila.” she said with a grin.

“On purpose?” Etta’s eyes widened in surprise. “Goodness, to think I was gonna have ya give me a trim later this week. Now m’scared I might look at ya wrong and end up with a bowl cut,” she teased before waving the bartender back over. “They’re good, but this place really oughta get some of those little umbrella things to put in ‘em. Makes me feel more festive, y’know?”

One corner of Adriana’s lips curled up in a playful smirk. “Ha, Ha.” she leaned in closer to her with a laugh. “They don’t have umbrella things here? Well, damn. Let’s leave. This is totally bs.” she joked. Adriana turned to the random person sitting next to her and Etta at the bar. “What kind of bar doesn’t have umbrella things?!” she shouted.

“Yea it’s great, looks smooth, no dead ends, lovely color you know?” Arlo joked with a laugh. “I guess my compliments have been a little off lately, don’t tell anyone it will totally ruin my whole rep.” He smirked slight before he nodded. “I get it - I mean I actually don’t because normally I’m not smart enough to think of consequences before I open my mouth.” Arlo chuckled with the girl. “Oh damn I was about to hit heavy with the tequila, but alright I’ll take a vodka soda and a scotch on the rocks please.”

Adriana raised her brows and smiled. She let out a genuine laugh that the entire bar could probably here. “Yeah? Thank you. I try.” she said, still laughing a bit. Taking a few deep breathes, she looked over at Arlo. “No, I’m sure you’re doing great. I would expect anyone to know about hair except other people who went to cosmetology school too. So don’t be too hard on yourself. I bet when it comes to normal things you’re great with the compliments and the pick up lines.” she thought for a moment. “Shots sound so tempting. Maybe after this drink.”

It only took a few moment of her friend’s reassurances for her worry to fade, eyes coming away from the locks in her hand and damn near beamed looking like the proudest of the proud. She’d sat in Adriana’s chair many a time and for some reason the desire to make sure she was keeping her hair as healthy and invigorated as ever was too important. Like making sure to have the cleanest, shiniest teeth when you visited the dentist. Her hand ruffled in her hair as her fingers laced through it and it bounced, a product of her friend’s work, she winked as her hand went to gently pat the other girl’s. “Oh you stop it, flatterer. Drinks now in front of them, Ivy barely took a breath as she gulped down her drink in one go as Adriana’s words had her too interested. "Maybe she’s bordering on senility, was she ancient? Those old women honestly still think getting perms is a good idea.” Already waving over the bartender for another round, Ivy laughed, nose scrunched and head tilted back for full effect. “Please tell me you got a before and after pic?”

Adriana took a piece of Ivy’s hair in her hand and admired it for a moment. “I mean, I have been the one to do it before. So I’m just complimenting myself after all, no?” she gave her friend a little wink as she joked. The Latina turned her attention to their drinks as they were placed in front of them. Picking up her drink, she took a small sip. Shifting her eyes over to Ivy as she chugged her whole drink prompted Adriana to do the same. With a small chuckle, she waved the bartender over and ordered the pair another round. “Sometimes it’s hard to get mad at older people. Obviously, they’re starting to loose it and you can’t blame them for that. It’s like for little kids except opposite - they’re still learning social norms. But honestly - this lady was a bitch and is probably dying alone in a nursing home somewhere.” Adriana winced. “Sorry that was a tasteless joke.”

“Do you not think it might be just a little bit weird if the entire town starts calling Miss Maggie for no real reason?” Maggie chuckled as she looked back to to her friend. “I mean as cute as it is it sounds like I should be teaching in kindergartner.” As soon as her friend answered her Maggie felt her stomach drop and she instantly felt guilty. “Oh shit Adi I am so sorry I’m such an idiot, you can have my mom to share if you want? She’s pretty great.” She offered with a weak smile still feeling bad even if she wasn’t mad at her. “Yes ma’am I will carry all the snacks.” She laughed as she took them from her and followed her up the stairs.

Adriana thought for a moment and, with a shrug, nodded in agreement. “Alright, yeah that’s a little cooky.” she admitted. “I would get so uncomfortable if people called me Miss Adriana. That makes me sound old.” she cringed. Letting out a small laugh the raven-haired girl gave her friend a light smile. “It’s fine. I’m glad people forget and don’t know me as the girl who fled to a small town because her mom died.” she chuckled. “I’d love to share your mom. She’s one hell of a woman.” Adriana made her way up the familiar stairs and to Maggie’s room. She plopped down on the girl’s bed and reached her hands out for the snacks. “Snacks, snacks.” she begged.

“ What the eff? If your boss wouldn’t have been beside you, in your position I would have bitch-slapped that woman”, Josie rolled her eyes, sympathizing with the other as she had those kind of air-headed clients at her work too. “The next two rounds are on me, hun.”

“Good to know I’m not the only one that wanted to slap that bitch silly.” she folded her arms and scowled. Her safe slowly went soft and turned to a grin when she offered to buy the next round. “Wow, I should complain about work more often to get free drinks.” she laughed.

Adriana took another sip of her margarita before taking a big sigh and relaxing herself. “Better, but not good yet. I’ll need to finish this first.”

Adriana smiled at the young man in front of her in approval. “She was a bitch - and yes, my hair does look good, right? I’m not one for bragging but I’m also not one for lying.” she chuckled. “Thank you, you’re too kind.”

“It was priceless.” Adriana raised her brow and shrugged. “Oh yeah, it’s tough. Nothing I can’t handle though. It was hard because it felt backwards. The first time I did my hair by myself I totally fucked it up and had to where my hair in a ponytail for weeks before it evened out. I could always do your hair for you - on the house because you’re adorable.”
