Folklore songs as Adrienne de Lafayette (and some John Laurens) prompts
I recommend you to liten to the whole album if you like cottagecore feelings and sadness, but here I will only talk about some of the songs!
Cardigan (Chase two girls, lose the one/ When you are young they asume you know nothing) - Adrienne and Gilbertās story through the story of a Gilbertās old military jacket, from their younger years when people thought Adrienne was just a naive wife until her last years at La Grange, where sheās telling us this.
Exile (You are not my homeland anymore, so who am I defending? / Iām not your problem anymore, so who am I ofending now?) - Both sides of a broken heart: Adrienne who gets out of Paris to Chavaniac, leaving Gil with his mistress, and John who goes away from the camp and from Hamilton, riding his horse in the night. At the end, Gilbert appears at Chavaniac looking for Adrienne, but Alex just stays far away from John.
My tears ricochet (I didnāt have it in myself to go with grace/ cause when I fight you used to tell me I was brave) - Hamilton dreams about John being burried and opening his eyes, so he goes to the cementery. There, he sees his ghost, who talks to him and shows how Alex feels guilty. At the end, he starts digging with his bare hands in order to get to Johnās coffin.
Illicit affairs (And thatās the thing about illicit affairs and cladestine meetings and longing stares) - Even if the obvious would be John and Alexās relationship, my imagination flows towards Adrienne being sick of hiding her love for Gilbert even if she is his wife, firstly because of the rumors and his reputation and after that, because that would make her his weakness.
Invisible string (And isnāt just so pretty to think all along there were some invisible strings) - John and Alex story, as if they were tied by this string of fate (a golden one), for example, in that letter of Johnās father where they talk about Hamiltonās hurricane and then colliding in camp as aides at the same time, like sometinhg that just happens once in a lifetime.
Epiphany (Only 20 minutes to sleep but you dream of some epiphany, to make some sense of what youāve seen) - The war and the caring. The first part is about war and death and the awful part of fighting for your idealsĀ (in this case, the Revolutionary war and the French Revolution) and the second part is how hope and love help us to keep on (that is the epiphany). Gilbert is war and Adrienne is that hope, that epiphany.
Betty ( If I showed up at your party would you have me, would you want me?) - A modern AU where Alex ruins everything with an affair and he has to apologize to John in front of all his stupid friends with stupid excuses. Also, Inez is obviously Gilbert.
Hoax ( Donāt want other shade of blue but your/ no other sadness in the world would do) - Alex recting to Johnās death as if it was some treason, as if it wasnāt true, as if he had abandoned him.
Bonus track: seven is about Johnās childhood.
Hope you have liked it and leave your own prompts in the notes!
