Sports Ranked by my Viewing Interest
This is a highly personal list that can change almost daily. Some other fringe sports may be excluded.
Basketball - Basketball can be entertaining at almost any level mostly thanks to the up and down action that no other sport can match. The freak athleticism at the top level is also unparalleled.
Hockey - I feel about hockey the way I imagine a lot of people feel about soccer. It’s nearly continuous action often at a frenetic pace, but requires great technical execution to succeed. The introduction of HD television has increased my interest dramatically.
Football - I generally disagree with the concept of the modern game of football. Too many performance-enhanced athletes and life-changing injuries to truly enjoy, but there is still no better sport to gamble on.
Baseball - My interest in baseball has varied wildly, going from the top spot to the #4 spot and back numerous times, typically based on the amount of free time I have to stay connected to the sport. This is not a game for the impatient.
Golf - You only need to play the game once to appreciate the mental toughness and discipline required to play this game at a very high level.
Tennis - The great thing about tennis is probably that you can choose sides very quickly by watching just a few points.
Track and Field/Running - Having run for a small portion of my life, I have a great respect for anyone who chooses to/has the ability to do this for a living.
any event during the Olympics - Swimming, handball, skiing, it doesn’t matter. When national pride is at stake, things become much more intense.
Horse Racing - If they didn’t allow you to gamble on it, I doubt I would ever watch a horse race.
Auto Racing - I lived in the South for long enough to have a small amount of respect for the strategic aspects of the sport, but not long enough to consider driver’s “athletes.”
Soccer - Like hockey, but slower, less physical, and involves almost no use of the hands.
Women’s sports - I respect female athletes, but I do find it hard to watch slower/less talented versions of men’s sports.
Cycling - To be fair, I rarely watch cycling, because I don’t understand it. Also, the competitors look like cycling robots in spandex.
