Was this a bad idea? Not really—all Ellie wanted was to have a hilltop picnic while the weather was nice—a rarity in Swynlake, if the past few days had meant anything. Was this an impulsive idea? Sure, most of her ideas were. Still, it was too late to turn back now. She would either collapse at the top of the hill, or collapse at the bottom, and there was no way she was walking all the way back down there without at least enjoying her lunch first.
And then her legs trembled, the shakes getting worse the further she pushed herself. Wait. Shit. Nononono, not now! She squeezed her knees together to brace herself for impact as gravel cut into her skin. That was going to leave a mark.
Alright, simple. All she had to do was push off–Nope, that was gonna work.
“Hey!” She shouted to the stranger walking by. “Sorry to bug you, but would you mind helping me up?

“Thanks so much!” She smiled up at the other woman and felt the strength return to her legs. At least being in the early stages of “My name’s Ellie, by the way.” She stared up the hill, and thanked her lucky stars that the end was in sight. “Hey, do you want to share this picnic with me? This isn’t like a date or anything, but I’m pretty new to town and don’t really know anybody all that well.”
She swung her picnic basket while waiting for a response. The fake twine suddenly felt rough against her palms. Luckily, she hadn’t used her basket to cushion the fall. Sure, the chips may have been crushed and the fruit a little bruised, but they would be okay, right? In Ellie’s mind, the picnic didn’t have to be perfect, it just had to be real.

“It’s nice meeting you Ellie! My name’s Eilonwy.” She could see the woman glance up the hill, and decided to walk with her at least until they made it there. She might not need any help, but it wasn’t like Eilonwy had anything else to do right now.
But! It was even better that she was invited! “That sounds amazing! I’ve only been living in town for sort of almost two years, so I can’t tell you everything but I can tell you lots about the town. Plus, who turns down a picnic in their right mind? It’s a great day for a picnic. So what made you decide to come to Swynlake??” she asked as they started to walk their way up towards the top.
Oh god. Out of all the questions in the world, why did it have to be the one Ellie was never in the mood to answer? “Oh, you know, nothing important. Just...needed a change of pace!” Ellie laughed and forced a wider smile. “It’s so different from America. I miss home, of course, but I can already tell great things are on the horizon, you know?” “And what about you? Let’s see...what’s your favorite thing about Swynlake?”
