There is a kind of freedom that doesn't come with a holiday or a fireworks display. It's quieter than that.
My rescue dog Spice — part Husky, full personality — lived it every single day without thinking twice. She stalked squirrels like a ninja for twenty minutes straight. She had epic meltdowns about bath time. She refused to walk in any direction except her own. And when she was finally set free to run, she didn't hold back for even a second.
She was completely, unapologetically herself. And without meaning to, she kept teaching me the same lesson over and over:
Freedom isn't something that only happens once a year.
It's the freedom to stop replaying conversations in your head at 2am. It's the freedom to leave behind the habit you keep promising yourself you'll quit. It's the freedom to stop shrinking yourself to make other people comfortable. It's the freedom to be who you actually are, not who everyone else wants you to be. It's the freedom to close your laptop, go outside, and let yourself feel genuinely happy right now.
This Independence Day, after the cookouts and the fireworks and the long weekend, I hope you ask yourself one question:
What freedom have I been forgetting to celebrate?

Real strength isn’t always about staying where things are difficult or forcing yourself to keep going no matter what. Sometimes it’s quieter than that. It’s the moment you realize something no longer aligns with who you are becoming—and you choose yourself anyway.
This reflection came through movement, stillness, and thinking about the quiet wisdom I always saw in my rescue dog Spice. She had a way of sensing what felt right for her and what didn’t, and she moved through life with that kind of honest clarity. Letting go is also a form of strength. Sometimes growth doesn’t look loud. Sometimes it looks like walking away in peace.
Birthdays have a way of making us think about time. Not just how much has passed but how fully we've lived within it. My rescue dog Spice taught me something I've carried ever since: a meaningful life isn't measured in years. It's measured in moments. The walk in the morning light. The conversation you didn't rush. The small ordinary thing that somehow felt like everything. I made a 60-second video about what getting older has taught me about living well — and why joy isn't something we find someday.
