Can I just say if you’re a black descendant of a black slave who may have been forced to be with a white master be extra careful about contacting ancestors or maybe anyone who has a similar history. That Shit’ll fuck you up. I can only talk about my personal experience of being a descendant of a woman who was raped, when I tried to contract my ancestors I ended up contacting this man and it was the most soul crushing and disgusting experience. Be extra safe.
I can’t give good enough advice because I was just starting out when I tried to contact my ancestors and I was not fully prepared. I haven’t tried it since and I really don’t plan to again, at least for a long time. But please please be careful. Again this is JUST MY EXPERIENCE.
This is very important. First and foremost I think we should only contact our ancestors if we want to. If you have no reason to do so, than don’t. This is spirit work and you are working with spirits from beyond the veil.
You have to be careful, ask for the intercession of another spirit, PLEASE. I ask for my spirit guides to be with me, as well as God, and the angels. I want to be extra safe.
Reach out to only your ancestors who want to speak to you and who want your best intentions at heart. Make it very, very clear on who you want to reach out to!
Thank you for sharing this, anon. I’m sorry you had to go through such a painful experieince.
Sigil to help with my occasional dissociation and to keep me grounded. Remember that witchcraft is not a replacement for actual medical treatment but it can help! 💕

🌿 burn cedar sticks or cedar incense. cedar helps drive away negative influences, energies, and spirits. really good herb to work with when moving into a new space. helps with protection on all levels.
🌿 sprinkle a blend of salt, sage, and mint on the floors to soak up all the negative energies on the ground and vacuum up when you feel it has picked everything up. clean out all that salt from your vaccuun and dispose of it in the trash outside (not in nature)

🌿 manifest abundance and prosperity by meditating with citrine and placing it in your home. place a clear quartz next to it to amplify abundant energies

Snow Witchcraft
We just had our first real snow here in Ohio and it inspired me to write a post about using snow in witchcraft and spellwork.
Associations:
Release
Cleansing
Innocence
Life/death/seasonal cycles
Time
Freezing/stopping
Blinding/cursing
Ideas:
Collect a bit to add to a bath spell for cleansing and releasing anxiety or stress
Use in a spell bottle or charm to stop a habit, stop a toxic person in their tracks, freeze a relationship, freeze intrusive thoughts, etc
Use in spells, enchantments, hexes or curses that need a timed release or slow release affect (as the snow melts, so does the working effects’ build or wan)
Use in offerings to spirits or deities associated with the cold, winter, ice, death, or the Underworld
Write a project or idea on a slip of paper, fold up and pack into a ball of snow. Charge with intentions of creativeness, prosperity, and inspiration (you can include herbs and spices you associate inside the ball as well). Leave out on a windowsill or porch or in a bowl inside to melt and release your paper to the projects’ fruition.
Use a cup or bowl of it to help in meditations or spellwork relating to connecting with your past, childhood, shadow work, nostalgia, and innocence. Ideal for soft snowfall that you’ve collected.
Use in curses, especially association with blinding, freezing, or trapping someone. Ideal for hard snowfall (like blizzards) that you’ve collected.
There are many other ways snow can be used in witchcraft- definitely not limited to the ideas I’ve posted here! Feel free to share your experiences or suggestions and happy witching!
Bedroom Witch Tips
🌿Herb sachets hung above your bed (request herb sachet recipes from me if you’re interested).
🌿Hang Dry herbs upside down in your bedroom (Lavender helps for anxiety and depression… it is very calming or Mugwort for dreams. Mugwort is very invasive, you can find it growing everywhere).
🌿Herbs placed inside your pillow sheet (I place Mugwort leaves inside to active lucid dreams).
🌿Setup an Altar near your bed: add elements of earth, fire, water and air. You can also use your windowsill as an altar.
🌿Place Black Tourmaline under your bed: shields you energetically by taking the electromagnetic frequencies, and instead of absorbing them, tourmaline changes, redirects, cleanses, and purifies the energy. This is how it handles negativity, even energies of psychic attack too!
🌿Place Sigil writings or powders for protection and restful beauty sleep under your mattress.
🌿Keep a dream journal under your pillow! Dreams can help us get a glimpse into our subconscious and the more dreams you write the easier it becomes for you to remember them.
🌿Unless you are allergic, sleep with the window halfway open or cracked to let good energy move around and circulate in your room and keep skin hydrated during the night.
🌿Drink herbal tea before bed each night. (Request free herbal tea recipes from me if interested) Mugwort tea is great to have in the evening before bed to reach high levels of lucid dreaming
🌿Smoking Herbs before bed is great as well. I recommend this book for further reading: Smoke Plants Of North America by M.R. Ross. (Request free Smoke Blend recipes from me if interested). With reverence, Rosemary Milk 🌹
What Native people say about the use of sage: you can use sage, but you cannot smudge as nothing you are doing (waving sage around) is actually smudging. Smudging is a ceremony and you are, we promise, not smudging. Please buy sage from either us, or someone who sources the sage from us. White sage may not be considered endangered by the US government but corperate sourcing is making it difficult for us to source sage for our own religious purposes. Let alone to sell it.
What white people hear: never use sage ever, don’t ever buy it, don’t own it, don’t even look at it.
Look, y’all. There’s a couple of facets to my talk today.
1) Yes! You can buy sage! You really, truly can! Buy it from either native sellers (go to a powwow! Eat our food, buy our stuff, watch some dancing!) Or buy it from a seller who sources the sage from native people. Pick one. And no, buying it from 5 Below doesn’t count.
2) you CANNOT smudge. This isn’t just you “shouldn’t”— this is a YOU ARE INCAPABLE OF SMUDGING. Waving a sage stick around your doorways IS NOT SMUDGING. It is smoke clensing. Smudging, depending on the tradition and tribe, could easily have dancing and drums involved. You, as a white person, do not have the cultural BACKGROUND to even know how it works. At all. Period.
3) please, for FUCKS SAKE, stop making posts here on tumblr where you tell other white people about cultural appropriation and what they can and cannot do. Please stop, your license has been revoked because none of you bother to get the facts right. We native people are FULLY CAPABLE OF DOING IT OURSELVES. Consider instead: a) reblogging our posts where we talk about it! We’re here! We have made posts!! b) Making a post that states what we said and then LINKS BACK TO US. Screenshot with a link if you must. Stop centering your own voices in these conversations. You are already centered in everything, stop centering yourselves in a native space.
I’m tired of this nonsense, y’all.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk ™
How to use a sigil wheel.
A tutorial.
I rarely use this method myself, but I know people are always looking for tutorials on different methods of sigil making and not finding any. I’ve had a few different people asking for more graph based sigil making techniques, and this is a fairly well known one that fits that category. I hope this tutorial is coherent and answers questions instead of making things more confusing. If you have any questions, however, never be afraid to ask.
⭐️ Strengthen Our Bond ⭐️
A couple people asked me to post the spell for the spell jar I made the other day! This is the first spell I’ve posted, so let me know if you need clarification with anything. I’m happy to answer any questions 💖
This spell jar is intended to create a stronger connection with your loved one and protect the connection from weakening.
Note: Any of these ingredients can be substituted, omitted, or things can be added for a more specific intent.
What you’ll need:
A cute jar! *Himalayan Pink Salt - friendship, love and purification *Rose Petals - healing, love and protection *Peppermint Leaves - love, lust and protection (use tea if you don’t have mint leaves on you!) I also used peppermint flowers because they’re so pretty 😊 *Coltsfoot - love and peace *Rose Quartz - friendship, happiness and love *Amethyst - peace and protection *Apple seeds - love, protection and purification. (And fertility if that’s what you’re going for) *Lavender - happiness, love, peace, protection and purification *Jasmine - love Incense - I used strawberry for love (and it smells really good!) but you can use jasmine, rose, or lavender if you’d like! String (pink if you have it!) White and pink candles A funnel for the herbs if you need it!
* - going into the jar
So first I layered all of the ingredients in the order they are listed in the jar. Focus on the correspondence you feel in each item as you place them into the jar. Then, I sealed the jar with white and pink wax. Practice fire safety when doing this, please! And don’t get wax in your carpet like I did.
Next comes the string - it’s a perfect opportunity to incorporate knot magick if you practice that! Visualize the connection between you and your lover growing tighter and stronger as you pull the knot closed. Giving it a few extra tugs doesn’t hurt!
Finally, I passed the spell jar through my incense and sung a love song. If you’re not comfortable singing, try saying a poem out loud that reminds you of your beloved!
I’m planning to give this jar to my beloved on Valentine’s Day, but you can always give it to yourself for some self-love 💕
The Basics
Like with candles, thread, and many other magickal ingredients: the color of a feather is one of the most important aspects. All colors have their traditional associations, along with what an individual associates them with. For example: red can be a color of love, a color of passion, a color of anger, or whatever else you may associate it with.
Another important factor is the bird from which the feather came. If the bird was a pet of yours who you have a strong relationship with, or a wild bird which visits you often, the feathers will have uses that they could not have if you simply found them on the ground. This does not mean feathers you found somewhere aren’t useful, but they have different uses than feathers from a bird with which you have a strong connection. Feathers from a bird you know, similar to bones from an old pet, can be used for protection spells. I used a feather from my cockatiel for a spell to protect my mind from my abuser, since my bird and I have a strong, loving relationship.
The third important factor about feathers is from which species of bird they come from. Like other animals, the spirits of different birds can have different intentions. Hawks represent intuition, owls represent wisdom, crows represent prophecy and luck, and eagles represent bravery (these associations, like those with colors, can change depending on your personal beliefs).
Also, though I will mention elements different kinds of feathers are associated with, remember that regardless of color or species, all feathers are associated with the element of air along with whatever else their color or species may define.
Common Color Associations
Brown Earth, stability, safety, concentration, locating lost objects, construction, material objects, food, grounding
Grey Simplicity, loneliness, contemplation, purification, modesty
White Unity, purity, cleansing, balance, healing, innocence, truth
Black Protection, safety, banishing, black magic/curses, repelling negativity and black magic, defense, reversing curses
Yellow Sun/solar magic, happiness, success, youth, inspiration, imagination, socializing, charm, childhood, memory, creativity
Orange Fire, intelligence, celebration, fun, creativity, healing, mental health, success
Red Fire, passion, vitality, love, anger, danger, war, sex, physical fitness, fertility, assertiveness, survival, power
Feathers from a Bird You Know Well
Uses
Protection spells
Spells to strengthen relationships
Spells to strengthen yourself (physically, emotionally, or spiritually)
Hold it in your hand while meditating to help contact your inner self
Give as an offering to a spirit you want a stronger relationship with
Common Bird Associations
Hawk Intuition, knowledge, seeing the “bigger picture,” visions, astral projection.
Hawks are known for their eyesight, able to see incredibly far with great accuracy. As they fly through the sky, they often see the world in the form of a bigger picture, and their ability to see far away helps with astral projection.
Crow Death, prophecy, luck (good or bad), curses, divination
Crows are typically associated with death and luck, both good and bad. They are also known to be great prophets, as well as signs of future events.
Owl Wisdom, knowledge, strategy, victory, levelheadedness, protection
As most people know, owls are most commonly associated with wisdom because of their association with the goddess Athena (AKA Minerva). Athena was also the goddess of war strategy and tactics, and often brings levelheadedness and calm to those in stressful situations - mainly battle.
Eagle Bravery, confidence, victory, strength, protection
Eagles are known best as the national bird of America. They are meant to represent bravery, strength, confidence, and many similar ideas. Despite these mainly being an association with bald eagles, the spirits of other eagles often embody these traits.
Cockatiel Friendship, happiness, youth/childhood, innocence, creativity, playfulness, self-expression
Cockatiels are playful, silly, and never take themselves too seriously. If you’ve ever had one as a pet, you know they value friendship with their humans, and they generally have the attitude of a young child who always wants attention.
Parakeet Solar magic, communication, intelligence, loyalty, trust, love, alchemy
Parakeets, like cockatiels, love attention. But unlike cockatiels, they are much more trusting and loyal to both other birds and humans they’ve learned to love. Cockatiels are often unable to comprehend these ideas, having such childish spirits, but parakeets feel very strong loyalties toward those they love. Their ability to mimic sounds also makes them a good representation of communication, and they are good guides to call upon when you want to learn to speak up or stand up for yourself.
Parrot Communication with higher powers, intelligence, friendship, communication, diplomacy, trickster magic, happiness
Parrots are also very social birds. They have long been associated with gods, as they were beautiful, colorful spirits seen flying through the sky. Their intelligence allowed them to be both benevolent and tricksters.
Finch High energy, physical activity, happiness, diversity, energy, family, vulnerability
Finches are energetic and excitable. They live fast-paced, high energy lives. There are so many different varieties of finches, and they are so unlike any other bird, so they do well in representing diversity and originality.
https://www.fws.gov/birds/policies-and-regulations/laws-legislations/migratory-bird-treaty-act.php
Lots of the comments are about the Migratory Bird Act so I’m going to add some of my earlier research about it in my reblog.
I’m not going to tell anyone what to do because while I understand why this law is a thing, the spirit of the law and the letter of it often clash.
For example, in the US and Canada, Native people are supposed to have exceptions to this rule. Officials from whatever state or federal park dept. will try to cite or fine Natives for not having permits. Even if they don’t technically need it in that jurisdiction.
And then back on the other hand, there are unique Mexican hummingbirds going extinct because they’re being used to make charms.
So use discretion and do your research, and please stay safe. After the read-more I expanded the OP list to include birds that are protected by the list and who’s feathers could get you in trouble. Some are incredibly common, others are outright endangered.
