Review: The Lusty Beg Resort
Northern Ireland has a hidden gem on an island, off an island on an island.
This quiet and magical place in the depths of County Fermanagh is exceptional value for money at £25pp/pn*. For that you get a well appointed, clean and modern room on these private shores, with an incredibly generous Irish breakfast each morning.
We brought our own snacks for lunch, but in the evenings The Island Restaurant is undoubtedly where they make their money. The prices are very fair though (Starters - £6/7, Mains - £10/15) and the food is plentiful and fresh. Expect to feel like you’re in your local pub. The young, enthusiastic waiting staff can be caught humming along to the 90s playlist on the radio and that’s all part of the charm.
There are plenty of activities to get involved in on the lake, but for me this place is about a midweek getaway, when it’s at its most quiet for complete R&R.
One of the more indulgent parts of our visit was The Island Spa where the seaweed baths, massages and other luxurious treatments are tantamount to anything offered at any of NI’s more expensive hotels.
In parts, the Lusty Beg Resort is a little rough around the edges. Some members of staff are more keen than others, the island wide WiFi is sketchy at best and the outdoor hot tub was a little tepid (well, it is November to be fair...!).
But, it doesn’t take away from what this place is. It’s a lovely offering from friendly local people who are working very hard to create something very special. It’s come a long way from some of its historically brutal TripAdvisor reviews.
It won’t be long until I’m back on that little ferry, crossing Lough Erne for another couple of nights at my favourite hideaway. As Lusty Beg continues to improve I’d say it won’t be so hidden for much longer.
