Daniel in the Lion's Den
Artist: Briton Rivière (British, 1840-1920)
Title: Daniel Answer to the King
Genre: Religious Painting
Date: 1892
Collection: Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester, England
Biblical narrative depicting Daniel in the lions' den. The figure of Daniel stands resolute on the left, before the window of the prison cell in which he has been placed; sunlight shines down on his face and the stone floor around him. Seven lions pad around in the shadows to the right, keeping a cautious distance.
Here's a summary of the story in Daniel, chapter 6:
Daniel is promoted: Daniel is given a high position by the king, Darius the Mede.
Daniel's rivals trick the king: Daniel's jealous rivals convince Darius to issue a decree that anyone who prays to a god or man other than Darius will be thrown into the lion's den. Daniel continues to pray:
Daniel continues to pray to God every day.
Daniel is thrown into the den: Daniel is condemned to death and thrown into the lion's' den.
Daniel is rescued: Daniel's God sends an angel to shut the lion's mouths, and Daniel is found unharmed.
The king is overjoyed: The king orders Daniel to be taken out of the den and the men who framed Daniel to be thrown into the den instead.
The story of Daniel in the lion's Den is a reminder that God will always be with us, even in difficult times.
