this is gonna sound so silly 😞 but how do you get your colors to go over the lineart but like nicely?? I’m so confused on how to go from lineart -> color without making my drawings look wonky and I’m mesmerized by artists who somehow seamlessly color over their lineart in a satisfying way 💔 I have no idea if I’m making sense but anyway. I love your art!! You’re my inspiration <3

Your question isn’t silly at all! The thing about my art is that I don’t actually do real lineart. I start off with, for lack of better words, a refined sketch. Just like most art processes, my basic coloring and shading go under the sketch. I think it's really just my rendering that makes my lines appear as such. Here are a few general steps I follow when focusing on the lines and edges:

1. On a separate layer, go over the refined sketch with a hard round brush. The color I choose to use depends on the shadow that line surrounds. For instance, if I’m going around the face, I’d use the color I used for the shadow of the face.

2. Using a brush of choice at low opacity, color the lines just made with the base color of whatever the object is. Typically, I color just the inside of the lines, leaving a sort of outline. But sometimes I’ll color the whole line if I feel that the it's too harsh. I also layer the brush strokes, kind of like painting.

3. Experiment with whatever works, color, texture, anything! My whole lining process is really just up to the lighting and vibes of the piece, but those two listed above are the base steps.

And yeah! That’s really all there is to it. I’m not sure if I explained it well or if this is even what you're referring to, but hopefully this makes sense 🥲

I currently have only two programs, ibis paint x and Adobe Fresco. I mainly use ibis paint x since the interface is simpler, plus I’ve been using it for longer so making art is more comfortable. Though, I have been getting the hang of Adobe Fresco, but maybe not to the point where I’ll be able to make full art pieces. Hopefully I will in the foreseeable future because their brushes are soo good and I desperately want to use them.
